    This is a great idea for smaller enclosures! The silicone takes up way less room than the foam! Perfect way to make a custom background in the smaller ones and save space!

    Great video man! I used expanding foam for some of my bioactive enclosures, but I feel the foam takes up too much space. I like your method of adhering the background directly to the glass!👍

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  3 года назад +1

      Yeah the foam can take up quite a bit of room, especially in the smaller enclosures... There's another method using Gorilla Glue that I've been wanting to try out.... I think it was one the Clint's Reptiles vivarium builds that I saw it

    never seen anyone slapping the silicone + substrate mix directly on the glass^^ easy and simple. did you sand down the wood for the ledges to maximize surface area or is it just fine without?

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  5 лет назад +5

      I do use great stuff sometimes, but I just wanted to do something quick and simple for this one, and with the smaller enclosures it leaves more room for the plants and frogs. No sanding on the wood, I find silicone adheres to cork bark very well.

    • @TroyGoldberg
      @TroyGoldberg 5 лет назад +5

      The only problem with not doing some sort of foam background plants aren’t really able to root into silicone.... but as far as a simple quick background, this method works great!

    • @SilkMilkJilk
      @SilkMilkJilk 5 лет назад +5

      @@TroyGoldberg I was planning back and forth how I want to do my background. But now I'm pretty much settled on doing corkbark for structure and hygrolon for the rest directly on the glass. I hope it will end up good looking^^ the only downside I see with this is that I can't really have some sort of wood reach deep into the viv from the wall. to make sure the 'air space' won't be too empty I'm gonna use real jungle vines and some chollo wood. it's either gonna look great or totally suck at this point I can't tell anymore^^

    • @TroyGoldberg
      @TroyGoldberg 5 лет назад +2

      SilkMilkJilk that will work just be carefully to
      Fill all cracks of cork bark... frogs love getting behind the cork... they’re notorious for It

    • @SilkMilkJilk
      @SilkMilkJilk 5 лет назад +2

      @@TroyGoldberg I will thanks^^ but as with the background, the choice of inhabitants went back and forth aswell haha^^ right now I'm almost certain I stick with the initial plan to get a trio of mourning geckos and add a pair of phyllobates bicolor. I love the orange back with green legs. I was really hesitant with those due to the loud call but I think it should be alright within the glass. and they only call in the morning and evening, right? am I able to influence that with the light schedule?

  • @12342087
    @12342087 4 года назад +1

    Nice, I like the caulking idea for the sides of the glass instead of having to buy more cork or using the foam I’m going to do the same👍 and I’m going to look at Home Depot, should be the same as home hardware? I’m in Canada but in Quebec...I did buy I think it was called pond caulking..it didn’t work in fact it never dried properly and was seeping had to pull the whole build apart ...lesson learned I need aquarium caulking.

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  2 года назад

      The stuff that I get from Home Hardware is a specific Home Hardware brand so I think it's only available there, but I think the GE 100% silicone will work too. Just avoid anything that says mold or mildew resistant, as those contain chemicals that are harmful to frogs.

    I noticed you put a tube coming out of the where the hydro ball layer is, how often do you have to change the water for this layer? Or is that tube just to add water to the layer when it runs low? Also, nice build I like how nice it looks by just adding silicone to the glass with the substrate!

    I notice you have a lot of vivarium that were aquariums, do you have any issues with venting and if not how do you manage air flow?

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  2 года назад +1

      Some of them have little to no airflow. Never had any problems. The plants provide oxygen and the top gets opened every day or two for feeding which introduces fresh air as well.

    • @NorthernFrogger

      @@LJsReef I technically could ship to you, but the paperwork and expense is usually not worth it... Dart frogs are CITES listed, so to get them across the border requires special permits and inspections by Fish & Wildlife. Last I checked it was going to cost about $1000+ to ship frogs to the US.

    I guess I'l just need to get used to it. Almost every person that I have seen do a video seem to take up the first fifteen min of the video with telling you what is going to be in the video.
    Did every last one of them take the "how to present a video 101" in college ? What a waste of time.

    • @NorthernFrogger

      Sorry my video didn't meet your expectations... I'm always looking for ways to improve so I appreciate the feedback! :)

      @@NorthernFrogger The tutorial part is just fine. It's the entirely redundant introduction that waste time. By the time you do the intro, I'm bored.
      Trust me I can make up my own list of what you said in the video AFTER I watch the video. Post on like Facebook are doing this also now. They talk for ten min BEFORE they let you see the video. I usually turn those off at the beginning. Waste my time/you loose my attention.
      I did like the tutorial part. I'm building a 60 G tank(think 3 ft long 75 G tank) 18x36x 21.5 tall. But I don't want to destroy the tank by placing silicon on the glass.
      So I haven't reached a conclusion yet. I'm on Social Security so I can't make one build after another.
