I guess I am a product of another era. When I started writing for woodwinds, brass and strings there were no samplers. Back in high school in the late 60’s I started by transcribing parts from Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears albums for my band. I was a drummer so I first had to learn how to read and write music. I then moved to transcribing big band charts scoring all the parts. One had to learn the ranges of all the instruments and how to write out the parts. Up a major second for trumpet, a major 6th for alto sax, major 9th for ten or sax, alto clef for violas, etc. one had to have basic knowledge. Now people want to jump in without putting the work. Even though I have a degree in music composition (almost 45 years ago I really enjoy your videos and channel.

@@ChristopherSiu Hi Christopher, this morning one question came to my mind. Let us imagine you have used woodwinds and brass together in one approach. Would you use two of each instrument again and doubling the melody lines?
dont forget if you are writing sheet music, clarinet trumpet and horns are transposing instruments.

Great lesson! Thanks for showing us these techniques! May I suggest that besides labeling your different tracks (thank you!), also assign different colors to the MIDI regions. In addition, I know Logic can display different colors per part (instead of velocity) in the Editor window. Especially that one would make the job of following along so much easier! Thanks again! Chris great video!! if i may suggest- try using different region colors and multiselect different regions from instruments u want to harmonize and u can tell logic midi editor to color each instrument notes by their region color instead of velocity. that way, u do t have to go back and forth between regions while harmonizing and is a great tool to illustrate your concepts on a video: love your content and the concepts! i am also enjoying your course!

Question on breathing. When you write an orchestral score do you try to have the entire orchestra "breathe" at the same time, or do you "stagger" the breathing between instruments, or is it somewhat dependent on the arrangement, and effect you wish to achieve?
Great question Joe, and a wonderful idea for a new video! I think it depends entirely on the arrangement. If we’re sustaining a long chord with woodwinds, for example, they can certainly do that, but I’ll need to write in breath marks where one flute breathes while the other doesn’t, or one section breathes while the rest sustain. We can call this stagger breathing, if you will. In any case, I try to have them breathe in a place most natural for the phrase.

@@jaketanner109 Yes, I would say so. The overall quality of the Cinesamples libraries is more upfront and center, so the winds have the same quality.

Christopher Siu what is the benefits of having kontakt full? Can I still get away with using kontakt player? Do large libraries like Metropolis ark and cinematic strings need kontakt full?

@@peanutbutter1998 Honestly you can get away with a lot with just the Kontakt player. The full version allows you access to every single Kontakt-based library, while the player only works with the libraries where the developer paid NI to have their library with in the player version. The Arks and CSS do not need full Kontakt.
