One thing that I've found really helps to solidify a pattern is watching your partner. This is especially helpful when your partner is more experienced than you. For example when I was first learning 7 singles I was really struggling but when I finally started watching my partner I found it much easier. It helped me match his pace but also helped me copy what he was doing.
Something I have personally found really helpful whilst passing is trying to through "through" your partners hand as if they are a ghost and you are trying to get it behind them.
I've become a juggler while around dozens of other jugglers, and passing is just second nature to me. There are so many points in this tutorial that I realized people who rarely get to pass don't know of. (up-downs, etiquette, etc.) This will help me teach a lot better.
I learned this way, but I now exclusively teach the 5-club ultimate way. I think it's better for a lot of reasons, but the biggest is in the uniformity of the pattern. Think of it this way, when you're learning to juggle, your basic cascade is every throw is exactly the same. This is how we should think of passing, the most basic passing pattern should be ultimates, because if the goal is to learn how to pass, then all those self-throws breaking up the passing is disrupting the learning. 5-club ultimates is the lowest pattern that has a time pressure because there's 1 more object than hands. We don't teach people half-shower or jugglers tennis first when they learn 3 balls, but that's kinda what we're doing when we teach 4-count and 2-count when they start passing. I find that when people learn the ultimates way, they progress much more quickly to 6 and 7 club ultimates and other ambidextrous patterns than those that learned the right-hand only method (myself included). It took me years to break a lot of bad habits from right-handed only passing. I'm looking forward to the 5-club ultimates tutorial because there's not a lot of good videos teaching that method, I've really only seen the passing pedagogy site, it seems like this is something that's really only taught in person.

When they look away, they end up following their own rhythm instead of looking at their partner and synching the timing from their feedback. With ultimates, the only place to look at is your partner and they must react to the incoming pass to clear their hand, if they predict the throw they end up throwing too early and getting collisions. Learning with ultimates makes the passer much more reactive, which is key to being a strong passer. They need to learn to hold onto the clubs until the incoming pass forces a throw to empty the hand. Occasionally, I'll even throw to the wrong hand to make sure they understand that their pass should be a reaction to the pass coming in, which keeps the pattern slow and manageable. This is also why I try to teach Jim's counts and mixed counts (4vs3, 3vs2, etc.) as soon as they can handle them. After my students learn 5-club ultimates, I assess their skills with solo juggling. If they can juggle a 3-club cascade while looking at me through it, I then teach them 3-count and color code the passes to make it easier for them. From there, learning 4-count and 2-count is pretty trivial. If they can't solo juggle a 3-club cascade while looking through, I just go straight to 6-club ultimates. It's not too much more difficult and it introduces them passing at the same time as their partner.
I love passing, but since we moved to a small town in Europe followed by Covid lockdowns I've been unsuccessful in finding other jugglers. My hope now is for my 3 year old to start juggling ...

If you have a different colored club in your left hand and slow start, then on a 6 count it's always the odd colored club that is passed. That's how I got around losing count in the 6 count

Nice video! Any chance we'll get some 7 club passing tips in the near future? It's one pattern me and my partner have never figured out and we don't have a teacher. I've heard it's just six with one person off by a half beat but we can't seem to make that happen.
Absolutely! 7 clubs isn't too tough once you figure it out but it can be weird to learn without proper help. Ill try to make a tutorial on it in the near future if I can get Delaney to do it with me :D If it helps, the way I always try to get the timing right is to have Juggler A (holding 4 clubs) throw a double to Juggler B, and when their double is at it's peak then Juggler B throws a double. From there the timing should be pretty correct and you just throw -double spin pass / self - over and over. I always had a hard time understanding the "half beat" thing so I always just look for the first throw to be at it's peak and throw when it starts falling. Not sure if that helps at all :)
At the moment I usually use Radfactor Russian balls, but when I use beanbags I use the Taylor Tries Pro beanbags. They’re not too soft or too hard and have a great feeling to them :)

I've never seen people practice 6 beat patterns. Always 4, with 2 beat being in mass group patterns. Surprised you didn't mention some people call 2 beat solids.
