Mark thank you for this and all your lessons.I'm a 65 yr old bassist that's played for decades and in many bands. And though the Ox is my bass hero, for one reason or another I could never get this solo down. You have helped me check off a bucket list wish and I'm having a ball with it.Your lessons are wonderful and I'm proof that one is never too old to learn a new trick or two. There goes another hundred hours of my life. Mark I just loved this video lesson. Just gets me more motivated to continue my lessons with you. Keep going
The thing I love about playing this song is that Entwisle improvised so much that even when you 'miss' a note, you can still play whatever you want over that basic idea of what he was playing.
I have only been playing bass for a little over 2 years and guitar for 2.5 which I would say is my main instrument. But Mark is a great teacher and ons of only 2 I follow currently. This song is very doable. If I can do it with my short experience, so can you.
Couple things here: this solo reached its peak on the Smothers Brothers version, prerecorded in studio then mimed during the broadcast. The bass is crystal clear, no bum notes, and a little more complex for good measure. Later versions are pretty sloppy. Also, John plays this solo differently every time, with fingers or pick. Finally, using a pick enables you to get the muted picked verse two-note modulation John plays under Roger's vocal. Just some stuff for people looking to expand on the basic version of the solo.
Entwistle was a truly consumate musician in a very old school tradition, he went a bit 'mutton Jeff ' in his left ear towards the end from having the amps behind him,he was a freemason and bought a huge mansion in the country to host his guests, he met Hendrix who wanted him to be his bass player which would have been awesome but of course John was already contracted to The Who so there was no way he could have joined The Experience as well, man if he had he would'ave been pretty busy that day at Monterey , Hell he'd 'ave been playing in both bands [competitors ], HIS collection of guitars and basses was legendary, literally hundreds stacked away.He had his own recording studio in the mansion and he had his own solo projects which were good but never as good as when The Who got together whether with Keith , Kenny or Zak...Zak Starkey really fits in well on drums with the Who...check out live at The BBC.sONGS LIKE '905,' and 'My Wife' outstanding....he started out as a guitar player much like Noel Reading and then switched to bass......The 'My Generation 'solo is iconic people didn't realise it was a bass solo at first they though it was a normal guitar solo! I've never seen anybody break down this solo so well before, you must have put in a lot of time to perfect those lines, man it would be such an honour to jam with your good self at an open microphone jam session , if we ever get to have those again....anyway , I've subscribed and I'll pass by to check out some other instructional stuff from time to time even though I'm not really a bass player ..just a standard 6 string Strat guy ! All the best.

Im sold, and GREAT lesson by the way. Great solo taken apart and explained in an understandable way. Lots to practice here. Love the 3 finger stuff. Thanks and gl with your music courses. Peace.
Great bass solo! Have you ever listened to Rancid? I know, probably not your style, but Matt Freeman is an incredible player. Out Come The Wolves - Maxwell Murder...check out his bass solo!...Matt learned by locking himself in his room, and listening to John Entwistle, among others.
This is NOT a criticism, but rather an observation: the solo that I’m most familiar with is from The Kids Are Alright film & I think it was on the Smothers Brothers show. You have the notes right but your phrasing is off just a bit. He plays it a bit more outside the confines of the beat so it has more of a jazz sensibility to it and it sounds a lot looser, which worked perfectly to compliment Keith Moon’s drum antics. If you ever have a few minutes, play along to that version and you will see what I’m talking about (hopefully). You already have the hard part worked out, which is learning the notes. Now have a little fun with it and see if you can match that feel. Awesome video, of course. Bravo! If you ever do another one of his songs, I would suggest The Real Me off of Quadrophenia. I think that’s even better than this song.
Thanks for the help but one thing: could you do it split screen? left side picking hand, right side fret close ups please? It would really hammer it home! Thanks
As ever a great lesson and well explained. My guitarist has just suggested this for our covers band. I’ll have a go. Genuine question. I play with a pick as I’ve always alternated between guitar and bass (I like both) do you think it will work with pick? I’m a massive maiden fan and Steve Harris bass lines just don’t sound as good with a pick IMO - I’ve tried loads

Mark, I love these break downs of these classic songs. But just a comment for those you do next: If you don't yet know that G is the 5th fret of the D string then you are probably not yet ready to play like Entwistle. Just call the notes. Just sayin, : )
Andy Gold There are plenty of people like that actually. In a perfect world I shouldn’t have to read out the notes. Players should be able to read what amounts to primary school level notation. But they generally can’t and I don’t make any assumptions of levels. It’s a comparatively simple line that’s good for intermediate level rock bass players (that are notoriously bad at understanding ‘notes’) More importantly, I have a large following of blind bass players that often comment and email on how the guided breakdowns are perfect for them.
@@talkingbasslessons This goes to the heart of my questions when I first signed up. From a local bar band’s perspective, what’s important?
