You should change the title to proclaim this fix to all XR150 owners. That's a really important mod to do if someone else owns this bike and has the same issue (which they probably do).
I 100% agree, the title should be changed to reflect the good fix... I have a riding buddy that was looking for a good reason on his oil use, and stumbled across this randomly.. We would have found/fixed the issue much sooner if the title said "XR150L Oil Comsumption Fix" or something to that effect :) Either way though, GREAT video, and your out there hammering that 150L WAY faster than I have seen it done before! Keep it up!!!!
We have had this carburetor fed xr150 until 2008 here in Brazil. Ive implemented this hose loop suggestion in mine (2008) and can even point out another advantage: after hours of travelling in heavy rain, water gets into the airbox and from there into the engine, but this loop prevents it from happening.
EXCELLENT bike mechanic troubleshooting skillz!!!!! You've discovered a truly golden piece of advice to every XR150 owner: "Do the TTM oil breather mod."
It's so weird I bought mine brand new and havent had any issues. Oil stays exactly at the same level. What a strange issue, but it's good to know just incase anyone else runs into the same problem.
My new XR150 has about 2,500 mile and I ride it hard. My bike does really consume much oil at all thankfully. I'm using the stock Honda oil. I hope it continues to stay maintenance free for the most part because It's a lot of fun!
In Brazil this bike has been sold for a long time, it's called Bros 125/150, we took the old ones and rode the enduro, we put the fairings and seat from the CRF 230, it's basically the same frame, and we have a lot of kits for the engine, mine It has a 70mm kit with camshaft and slightly worked head ducts, it's already a lot of fun, it has around 220cc, now I'm looking to put 21 and 18 rims... just the basics... but it's very common to see these bikes with forks from other motorcycles (XRE 300) and monoshock (Falcon 400) to have more suspension travel... it's the best value for money here...
genius!!!! I remember I used to ride a 1980 xl125s, modified by myself way back when youtube wasn't a thing. Oil breather goes up, DIY air box, DIY cdi and random parts from xl/xr engines.... Then I quit when I have to spend on diapers and cerelacs....
The best fix is the breather delete kit from taco moto combined with the uni filter from Rottweiler. You can run the silicone tube up above the engine toward the front of the bike and there’s a pocket in between the tank and frame that fits the filter perfectly. Running crankcase breathers into the air box vents dirty and hot air into the engine, it’s not good for it. Also changing the jetting will help. Running in a lean condition can and will burn oil faster.
Just picked up a used xr150 with 400 miles. Heading out to the shop to do this mod right now before i put another mile on it! Thanks for the heads up about the issue!
Brother the breather tube hose is set up almost the same on every zongshein Honda clone I’ve seen. All those “enduros” with the cb or cg clone motors out there. I’ve had people bring their bikes to me struggling to start because their air boxes are full of oil 🤦♂️oh well. It’s always an easy enough fix. I’m glad you got it sorted out. Keep up the good work Gabe. The new XR content is awesome. I’m about to grab me one up and hit the TaT like I did my Hawk.
Gidday, some great content. Can you list the parts you used for this fix? In some remote places in Asia its harder to get general items, so knowing the list of parts would be really helpful. Thanks
I used a single 2 ft length of hose that was 1/2 in inner diameter. You will need a ring clamp on the engine side because it's actually slightly smaller in diameter. I reused the clamp on the airbox side. You end up with a long loop that goes high. So far, so good, no leaks and no oil use.
Thanks. I'm having a similar issue on a much more high performance bike--and wouldn't you know, the breather hose is basically a horizontal piece from the case back to the air box.
Hey Gabe. Glad you were able to fix the issue and now you can enjoy the motorcycle as it should be. Would love to see you do a splitscreen comparison of lap times between this bike and any of the other ones you previously tested, just for the lolz. I have a XTZ 125 (Yamaha´s answer to the XR150L) and been thinking of modifying it for offroad/enduro lately, but stock suspension is just awful haha. Maybe just a RAW video shredding

Wow. who knew that the breather hose pattern was the issue. I admit I also did say that the oil reducing issue is normal for this bike. Thanks for this.
I owned one of these in The Philippines a few years ago. The first thing that is necessary is to put a larger main jet in carby. I found the motor running way too lean as stock, causing the bike to run quite hot. Also the best mod I did was put a larger sprocket on the rear........... this was a massive difference and immediately felt great.
I own one in the Philippines now. I did the very popular mod of swapping in the PZ27 carb ($7) from the TMX155. No more cold start issues. I swapped the fuel screw for one that requires no tools. It took some fiddling and testing to get the smooth throttle response back. I kept a close eye on the plug to verify if it was ric/lean/normal. I run Petron 20/50 4T oil for the hot climate here.
Awesome! I do have a considerable amount of oil getting lost through the breather on my XR650L. I have done various performance mods and run it on the freeway daily about 65mph for 35 miles each direction of commute. Engine revs are not bad with my highway sprocket setup of 15x42. I need to add abuot a quart every 300 miles which is aweful.
Hate to say it, but it's most likely rings. I had the same problem on mine and desperately wanted it to be something else. Once I took apart the top end it was painfully obvious. Make sure you have the factory catch can installed. If you do, and there are no blockages in the lines, you definitely have worn rings and/or a worn cylinder. The previous owner of my bike ran it with a gaping hole in the airbox past the air filter. I got tired of adding oil all the time and the occasional embarrassing puff of smoke on decel. All in all, I had about $1000 in parts once everything was finished.
Very well could be, no catch can installed currently but extra long tube going from breather to airbox. Also plenty of power and no smoke while riding or startup. Currently about 25K miles on current piston % rings, changed them first time at 25K miles going for a rebuild at 50K miles. Someone mentinoed that the bike has a tight ring tollerence to begin with causing issue when the bike runs hot scratching up the cylinder and causing oil blow by. Idk maybe need to figure out a good oil to run for highway. I use 10w40 with lucas oil stabil, thinking of using 20w50@@krp-xe3hw
I have a 07 KLX250 with a 352 big bore kit and pumper carb. I took it on a 1300 mile trip in 4 days with lots of high speed highways, dirt roads, trails and wheels. I consumed no noticable oil! And it is old and making way more power than it did from the factory. I don't think oil consumption is a thing unless you are riding at 8+k all the time. Nice fix!
Awesome! Glad it was something simple. There’s a mod similar for a lot of bikes, unfortunately for me it doesn’t work on the klr650 lol. Love your content man. Haven’t seen it in a while so I’ll have to go back and binge watch.

I have a Honda CB190R with the same oil consumption and the breather hose is just as short. A few days ago I made the same modification, we will see if the oil consumption changes.

It's not just this bike they messed up. The pioneer 700 side by side has a horrendous breather pipe setup. The pipe just rests against the side of the air filter, and is angled down slightly towards the engine, so any dirt that accumulates on the air filter, just enters the pipe & rolls down it into the engine. Odd question, but do you think its possable to add a kick start to the NA XR150l? Really the only thing I miss on this bike. Other then that lil guy has been a blast.
That's it... I was prepared to dig into this thing but after testing with the added hose for a few days and not seeing oil consumption anymore, I decided to give it a longer test. Decided it was good after 700 miles of not seeing any movement at all in the oil level. The unpaid interns that cobbled this design together did not turn out to be a cost effective solution, as Honda is already rebuilding engines under warranty after people fry them because of this piece of hose that is too short.
@@TortureTestMagazine Honda being penny wise and pound foolish. Excellent diagnosis, though I'm guessing having to wring out your air filter after every ride might have led you to it :)
@@TortureTestMagazine can you see oil residue in the clear hose you put on? I wanted to see a video of a few revs and oil shooting into the clear hose.
Yes you can see oil in the clear hose, you can even see it collecting at the bottom in this video. I haven't identified exactly when the oil makes its way into the hose but it doesn't happen by RPM alone. You can hold it to the limiter for several seconds and not see any oil go up in there, but riding around town and looking down at it at every stop light, you'll see that it's nice and wet in there. Perhaps it slings just right at certain transmission shaft speeds or something, idk... I'll leave it up to someone else to investigate the why, I just want to ride now that my bike is fixed lol
Beem riding one for the last 8 years and never have had any issue with oil consumption. I wonder if your issue is a result of one of the changes they made in the NA version vs the International version.
Just my 2c worth, it may be worth shoving some sort of strainer up into the vertical section of the pipe before the turn to give the oil; A: more of a restriction, and B: more surface area to condense onto (while still allowing airflow). Maybe steel wool or mesh or something of the like, similar to what I've seen in OEM airboxes on bigger bikes.
Another tip that goes along with that is to stick a K&N fuel filter on the end of the vent tube. Works perfectly and keeps unwanted dirt & debris out of the engine and from going back into the engine. I did this to my Nissan Pro4X rear differential and ran it all the way up to the passenger side break light housing. Not inside the light where the bulb is but behind it to hold it out of the way. Also to keep WATER out of it. !!!!!! You should try it. Works perfect.
Good catch! Now as far as the recommended intervals, I'm quite certain your usage qualifies as 'severe' so let's just go ahead and cut those intervals in half. Which makes it even less likely to need topping off! #silverlinings
@@eazyc9234 it’s not like it gets burned up that fast. I’ve driven my Toyota rav4 with a leaky valve cover gasket for years because I do tend to procrastinate lol
Where are you at on the spectrum? Baby powder and a blanket for your new bike for 500 miles or redline burp it out of the box to warm up the oil and blow out the chinese factory grease? I think I am in the middle with I try to be nice for 100 miles and do an oil change at 100. Nice is tough to do though.
from the suggestions you were getting it sounds like "common sense" is really just being stupid lazy. good on you for not just taking it and doing something about it.
My Xr150L just blew up on me. When i took it out of storage all the oil was missing. It freaked me out and i thought i was burning oil. So i filled it to the tits will fresh oil and i checked it every time i got gas. It was full. I stopped checking it as often because i thought the dealership must have put too little oil in it or something or maybe it evaporated over the winter. Than when i was on my way back from my girlfriends place i had a major breakdown. When i checked the oil, it was all gone again even though i checked it 2 weeks before and it was full. Super pissed off rn and do not know what to do with the bike since it hasn't even been paid off yet.
@@TortureTestMagazine I've contacted Honda about it. They said they need a full report from the dealer, the dealer can only get a semi report and estimate for now. I am praying they cover the costs because i am poor and cannot afford thousands and thousands to repair my only vehicle. But i honestly regret buying it now, i want to sell it if i get it back. I should have gotten the Kawasaki KLX 300 or the Suzuki DR-Z400 for my first bike. I just got a Honda because i liked their old commercials and i thought they were super reliable.
The DRZ won't let you down, just be aware of the common quirks like the self-loosening front sprocket and self-loosening nut on the crank. Beyond those two annoyances, that bike doesn't quit. The DRZ and the WR250R are probably the two most problem-free dual purpose bikes I've come across. Avoid the KLX if you can, the heads are not good for lots of miles.

I wonder if they installed it upside down. maybe should have a recall
It's always crank case breathers / vents
You do a compression test on it?
Good catch! Now as far as the recommended intervals, I'm quite certain your usage qualifies as 'severe' so let's just go ahead and cut those intervals in half. Which makes it even less likely to need topping off! #silverlinings
My xr150 have a clicking noise when the engine is hot 😢😢😢
So was your air filter soaked in oil at all?
Thank you for this. mega like and deff subbed
Is this still functioning properly?
Has honda addressed this issue?
My xr150l burnt out at 2400 miles and took honda 4 months to fix it
Judging by the terrain I'd guess you don't clean the air filter after every ride getting dirt in the rings.
Awesome Fix. Honda should know better.
Was it really a flaw or is it designed that way to keep fresh oil?
Obviously not a way to keep fresh oil if you cant keep oil in it
@@eazyc9234 sure it is a way to keep fresh oil if you keep adding it. Maybe not the best way. But a way
@@eazyc9234 it’s not like it gets burned up that fast.
Bro bought me American flag socks for my birthday. Tenk you bro. Ver cool.
2500 mile oil change lmao. I change my oil every 600 kms on my xr250l when riding hard
*Put a Lifan X-pect or KPX 200 through the same torture test and tell us your results.*
your need the XR 190L .
Should take them side mirrors off when riding out doors 🤷♂️
I wonder if honda knows for this. You should tell them.
That's incredibly frustrating
What about just venting it to the ground from the crank case, and capping the port where it would of plugged into the airbox?
Fantastic
Yeah this should be viewed by every XR150L owner
this guiy is great
