The lemon speech describes basically how De Beers convinced the world that diamonds are rare and expensive, that diamond engagement rings are traditional, and those diamonds should cost two-months' salary.
Bill T's reaction when Verna asks him how his day was is truly heartbreaking. You can tell he's not used to being asked that. I just wanted to give him a hug.
In "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", the detective is Auguste Dupin, one of the murder victims is Camille L'Espanaye. Bonus Easter Egg: the name tag on Verna's security uniform is Le Bon which is an innocent man initially accused of the murders. And yes: the kids are killed in order of their ages.
I mean Cam is goals - you know you're about to die and all you have left to say is "fuck it I got mine". So ready to face death on your own terms because fuck it - you had a good ride.
Camille was the murdered daughter in Murder of the Rue Morgue so I did expect her to be the victim of this episode. Also, the "smart guy" was Dupin in Rue Morgue! As for the 7 sins, I'm pretty sure Flanagan debunked that and stated that was never something intentional.
With a bit of imagination every piece of media can be interpreted with a deadly seven sins twist. Perry's lust, Leo is gluttony, Tammy is envy, Frederick is wrath, Camille is sloth, Vic is pride and then the siblings are greed or something like that.
@@a_Cynthia_Main I read the same. I think in the next episode Auguste will show similar deducting skills Sherlock has. And the character predates Sherlock by almost two decades or so.
@@carriesmith742 That's precisely why I linked them to greed. Perry's lust and Tammy's envy should be obvious, Frederick is over the top wrathful towards his wife, Leo's is gluttony if it comes to his drug addiction, Camille's lets her assistants do everything and lastly we got Victorine who is too prideful to acknowledge her own failures and gets awfully defensive and destructive if things don't go her privileged ways.
Farmers came and threatened me saying I couldn't plant corn, and also later that season asked me why I didn't tell them that groundhogs and deer had damaged a large portion of their field... Can't have it both ways, bitches.
i’ve watched this show thrice (plus like every reaction that looked good) and the GASP i just guspt at “maybe monty is short for amontillado” HOW DID I MISS THAT that’s such a nice touch
Even though the White Light is filling the chimp cell, when she holds up her camera we see that the room is actually dark. Its the first clear sign we get that the room lighting when the children are talking to Verna is supernatural.
Pretty sure the company Cody is talking about during the lemon monologue - the one that was suing farmers for accidentally growing patented seeds - was Monsanto
Keep in mind that the children, especially the bastards, can be very close in age. They all have different mothers except for the two oldest, so more than one woman may have been pregnant at the same time. I think the deaths are happening in reverse order of their age.
If you look at Verna's badge as a security guard, you can see the name Le Bon, who, in the Poe story, was the name of the prime suspect of the murders. Also, the name of the detective of the story was C. Auguste Dupin (the name of the prosecutor in Flanagan's show). As for kids representing the seven deadly sins, Camille was Pride. She had to be the one determined to find the informant, she fired her assistants (who were still willing to work for her) when then put a stop to the sexual aspect, and she chose to go to the lab on her own to walk to her own brutal demise.
I think Camille represents Envy. She is jealous of Vic "getting away" with her shady dealings and want to expose them. Camille spends her life promoting her parents and siblings but remains in their shadow. She also constantly cuts down every other member of the family when she can and I think she is jealous of her assistants forming an emotional bond she cannot. Prospero is Lust. Easy one to call.
Literally get so excited everytime you guys post. Can't wait to watch you finish out this series. Highly recommend watching the other Mike Flannigan shows if you haven't already.
Yes! I've been waiting for this reaction. Having someone who's just enjoying the ride and someone who has background on Poe is really awesome to have in one reaction! Love your takes and jokes. Can't wait for the next episodes!
Hey guys great reaction & commentary. Cody, I am impressed that u remember so much detail of the stories. I remember bits & pieces of the stories because I read them when I was in high school 35yrs ago. I recently re-read "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" & "The Black Cat". Do u remember why "The Murder in the Rue Morgue" would be Camille's episode? The name of the murdered woman's daughter is Camille L'Espagnaye, just like "The Masque of the Red Death" has Prospero & "The Fall of the House of Usher" has the twins, Rodrick & Madeline. With the other siblings, the names don't really fit the story, but are characters from other Poe poems/stories. O, that really smart guy that figured out they Rue Morgue murders kind of like Sherlock Holmes is named C. Auguste Dupin. Anyway, just thought I'd share that tidbit of knowledge. Looking forward to your next reaction to this series.😊
Watching this through the first time I knew there were Poe references, but I didn’t pick up on most of them. It’s so fun to watch along with y’all and have the references explained!
What's also underrated about Edgar Allan Poe that most people don't know is he helped jumpstart the murder-mystery genre, long before Sherlock Holmes* and many other murder-mystery stories took off (part of why Auguste Dupin is a recurring character in a lot of Poe's stories). Edgar also loved puzzles and ciphers and included them in some of his stories (like Goldbug). *Also, in one of Arthur Conan Doyle's earlier Sherlock Holmes stories, Auguste Dupin gets name-dropped and then gets slandered by Sherlock for (imo) no reason, lol. I still don't know why Arthur Conan Doyle would sh*t on him. XD ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’m so happy u guys are doing reactions to this show because for some reason there aren’t many people doing it when I was looking for some reactions yesterday. This show is so good! And I love you guys so I’ll watch anything you post haha❤️
I just finished watching this on Halloween night and I am so glad that you guys are covering this! Mike Flanagan is such an amazing producer! I think even Poe would be pleased with this!
One scene I really like is Pym finding Morrie. Pym can't possibly know who this survivor is, and he had every reason to want them to die so they can't potentially expose the truth, since he was sent in to cover up that this accident was Prospero's fault. But his immediate reaction was to alert the emergency services and in doing so, he saved the survivor's life. Despite him not being a "good" character, this act turns out to be a major contrast with the Ushers in the series.
"I don't give a shit, bEtH!" Is now a staple in my vocabulary 😂 Also, camilles "Ushers dont make things" and rods "lemòn" speeches were pure poetry and well acted. And big kudos to Carla Gugino for her performance as she moaned in pain and agony along with the chimps. If anyone else had attempted to do it, it would have seemed comical instead of terrifying
this was a Really good and REALLY REALLY CREEPY EPISODE WITH THAT ENDING. The only thing im confused about is how the chimp made its self look human when she was looking at it straight on . If someone could please explain that, that would be great !
Finished this series yesterday. Damn what a ride this was. I didn't expect that the deaths couldn't get any better or brutal after the first one, but I was so wrong. Camille's death scene - although of course not as brutal - is one of my favorites. The tension, the buildup and of course Verna being there all intimidating, it's all executed so damn well. Can't wait for you to see the next episode!
Can't wait to see Cody's final thoughts at the only gets more wild from here can't wait for the next ❤. And knowing next episode is black cat im excited
Love the Camp Crystal Lake hoodie! I honestly found Mark Hamill's chosen voice really distracting. It was not my favorite decision. From now on, I'm referring to my period blood as "pussy guts."
Sorry, but gotta say the "seven deadly sins" theory was kinda debunked by Flanagan. Also found out something about "The Black Cat" episode that I didn't know until after I watched it and read about it. It's something you can figure out by carefully watching the episode, so I won't say what it is. Cody is actually pretty awesome at picking up on details, so maybe he'll see it anyway. 😸 Oh yeah! Almost forgot. Gugino is pronounced with a "hard G". 😸😸
I think Camille represents Envy. She is jealous of Vic "getting away" with her shady dealings and want to expose them. Camille spends her life promoting her parents and siblings but remains in their shadow. Murder in the Rue Morgue is credited as being the first ever official detective story that set up the expectation for an entire new genre: crime happens, a detective is called to solve it, there's suspects that serve as red herring and then the detective reveals the real criminal. Poe started all of that with this one story about a monkey killing a woman. Every detective in fiction owes it's birth to him.

I can’t wait for Cody to see the Tell-Tale Heart. I think that will be his favorite episode.
Me too, I think it’s def my favorite episode aside from maybe the masque of the red death
Mine was the pit and the pendulum, it felt the most deserved
@@Shyknit yeah I can see that bc you start out feeling bad for him and then as it goes on it’s like,,,, dude. DUDE. NO.
Agreed! The series is amazing, and the Tell-Tale Heart episode blew me away! So good!
Agreed. There was something particularly disturbing for me with that episode over the others.
Cody should tell us a poe story at the end of every episode
I know the story of The Black Cat, Tell-tale Heart, and The Raven but not the rest of them, so it's good to hear Cody go over the stories T the end
I mean Cam is goals - you know you're about to die and all you have left to say is "fuck it I got mine". So ready to face death on your own terms because fuck it - you had a good ride.
Oh thats why she said that?
@@blndrndmguyok4403 That's how I took it.

And didn't "Rue Morgue" inspire the Sherlock Holmes stories? Think I read that somewhere too...

Carla did SO MANY INCREDIBLE ROLES 10000% agreed give her the emmy, ALL THE AWARDS
The company is Monsanto that sued the farmers. They actually get name dropped during the season.

Someone called it a "Cuddle Puddle " last episode ☠️

(I was trying to avoid spoilers because they haven't fully cottoned on to that detail yet) 😉

Every time you see Camille you remind me of Mugatu in Zoolander.
