- If you love expedition and explorer yachts and have a soft spot for catamarans, then there is a good chance you will like superyacht 'Silver Cloud.'
Although, the technical name for this rather unique and eye-catching vessel is 'Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull', or SWATH, for short.
The design and configuration of the hull on m/y Silver Cloud mean that she has exceptional sea-keeping capabilities in rough seas; a mainstay of any explorer yacht.

I think Silver Cloud is a good example of thinking outside the box as a alternative style of yacht and gives more living space with a smaller footprint.
Unique look for a yacht.
I love the look of the interior, and the space.
Wow! Silver Cloud is absolutely amazing. I love the over all design. Thank you much for sharing this amazing vessel.
Left me speechless.
Love it, first time seeing it was back in the 90's in a boating magazine.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm Feeling this Catamaran Explorer Yacht ⛵ 💞
This is what I think I have been looking for.
I love this cat! Perfect to explore the world.
Lovely. I think I would convert the helipad to a covered lounge with hot tub and sunning area.
🫡
Now that’s a gnarly yacht. Go pretty much anywhere. Great video. Cheers from Canada 👍🥶🇨🇦🏹
Thanks for watching 🙌
i have been looking for videos of large catamarans in heavy seas. The yacht companies never show anything like that but it is a reality of exploring! I understand that many of the cats are quick enough to avoid the worst of bad storms but I am sure that they still get caught in some pretty gnarly seas - only nothing broadcast!
You make a good point. Ultimately, you cannot outrun every storm so it amazes me that more boatyards don’t show their boats off, ploughing through big seas
I cannot find the video, but a Nordavn video highlights heavy seas with stabilizers, and also shows how the Portuguese bridge protects the helm. IIRC it was a Nordhavn 55 they used.
Look a The engineering channels on the topic .. also rapid offshore service boats and the new generation of cat. hulled sport fishing boats where they use a narrow tunnel to trap air and cushion any slamming a planing hull would face. They also have started using low lift planing foils to reduce drag and cushion the ride in a choppy sea state.
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 I had a 12m cat and encountered some heavy weather on numerous occasions especially off NZ and the Indian ocean where we hit the tail end of a Cyclone and Africa just North of SA in the Agulus current. Thank God we weren't in a monohull. In seas, in excess of 10m we always felt safe and comfortable. "Never sail to a timetable and never be afraid to turn back"

Yikes that sounds like a hairy experience... Was it a motor vessel or a sailing 12m . What was the hull constructed from?
There are vessels out there that are designed as wave piercing hulls mono and multi hulls. There are even plaining wave piercers. The biggest issue with
such designs is how wet the decks are with such designs even in typical storms. You have to design the vessel to effectively be able to function like a submarine and self righting for monohulls becomes
a need. Like Thunderchild ...
Sea keeping is often traded off for performance or other conveniences or functional requirements.
The changes we are seeing in weather and climate patterns I believe are going to force their way through every aspect of our
lives. For those that chose to live and travel by sea thats going to feedback into the design of the vessels they use. Simply the environment is becoming more extreme and the incidence and intensity of Squalls and storms more frequent.
Ray4sp look on the learning the lines channel they view different vessels. last week they featured an Alaskan built Explorer cat.
The NZ and Australians have quite a history of building very tough multihulls powered and Sailing. The growing desire to use hybrid power system s using electric motors for more efficient reliable propulsion means that multihulls have an edge in terms of Solar panel areas and arrangement.
I have never been keen on catamarans, but the excellent example you showed with the two rescue type boats has made me have a rethink. Well done and thank you. Paul from Australia.
G’day and thanks 🫡🇦🇺
Beautiful looking yacht.
love it especially the huge beam....
me too!
If a have the money and knowledge…I dream about that style of boat.🙂
I remember reading about the couple that had the ship built for. The wife would get seasick and this was a way of getting her out on the water.
Thanks, showed my dad this and he’s interested in this style for his next yacht.
Glad to be of service 😅
Id love to see this in rough seas 🌊
Agreed
yep a great world traveler, or just what i would want in Samoa !!
I want that vessel, scaled down to the mid 50’s to mid 60’s length. An Expedition Cat is my dream live aboard. Beam, baby, beam ;-) thanks for the video, mr…
Thanks for watching 🙌 glad you enjoyed the video 👍
If you seriously would like a similar boat to this in a 50-60” range you should look for used wind turbine or oil rig service boats that you could convert into this style of explorer yacht.
Это просто какой то взрыв мозга !
Great job,and Beautiful boat
Thanks for watching - glad you enjoyed it 🙌
More SWATH, please! Thank you, sir.
You got it!
I found this docked on Google Maps. Nice to see some of the details on this very interesting vessel.
Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment :-) glad you found the video useful
Strange n beautiful 😍🌹❤️
What an amazing yacht.
Thanks for watching 🙌 please don’t forget to check out my other videos 👍
This is an awesome Explorer yacht. You definitely need to do more onboard filming. Would love to see you on a rough Passage
Fingers crossed 🤞
Would love to see more yatchs lime this please
Watch this space 👀
That one looks incredibly safe in all weather conditions
Thank you,
this was eye opening!
I have always loved working ships, they bring harbours 'alive' unlike cruise ships that just sit there, often blocking the view, looking like floating ugly blocks of flats!
Cargo ships, not container ships, fascinate me, since travelling on one to Papua New Guinea years ago.
Much more romantic, like an old novel or Bogart movie and things happen.
Since those days, although I find the gorgeous floating gin palaces interesting to look at, after examining the decor, and how ultimate wealth all too often equates with ultimate bad taste, they quickly become boring.
However, specialist ships like ice breakers, explorers, subs, support vessels etc I find incredibly fascinating and engrossing, because they DO THINGS!
So, I like the technical aspects and to see how they deploy them etc.
Without a doubt, I would buy a number of such craft.
The catamaran surprises me regarding rough seas.
I would have thought there could be problems with one hull digging in, so to speak, if side on to a big wave?
Also, the underside of the vessel body coming into contact with wave action would surely cause uplift and/or rolling?
I am unfamiliar with the secondary (?) underwater hull system?
How does this cancel out the two abovementioned problems?
Maybe you could shiw drawings/plans or animations that demonstrate how it counteracts these problems?
I should think the companies building such craft should supply you with this detail, for a future customer could be watching your channel!
cheers and many thanks!
Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment :-)
Maybe this video by a naval architect will answer your questions: ruclips.net/video/jJAHyDl6KS8/видео.html
Frederick g kneed invented the swoth system of using ballast like submarines to be uneffectrdf by waves.
I Love This Catamaran...The Only Thing That Would be Greater Would Be If it Had Sails..
Very nice boat would think of charter this boat👍
This is Unique 🙂👍🏾
Thanks for watching :-)
Does having 2 submarine hulls and thin bulkheads on top decrease water friction? And if the hulls of the submarine were closer to the hull of the yacht, would the friction of the water be the same or greater? Why does the fact that it has a draft of 4 meters limit it for many places, right?
Show us the engine room n how wide it is to work n maintaine it mechanicaly
Fine video. Yes, trawler, explorer, expedition. Not some gimmicky wet dream fantasy.
How does this compare in price with other boats of roughly similar amenities and capabilities?
The SWATH design is a design for almost all seasons. There comes a time, though, when even this hull will be outmatched by the high seas. In the meantime, enjoy smooth sailing from this great hull design!
Thanks for watching 🙌
@@YachtBuoy I've seen pics of this yacht and its SWATH hull, plus there are other boats, especially pilot boats, that use SWATH hulls. When you see how stable SWATH pilot boats are when they come alongside the big ships as opposed to normal hulls, you see why SWATH boats are becoming more and more popular dropping off and picking up pilots.
I'd love to get one
awesome!
Glad you think so!
Luv it
seas over a certain height must be an issue if the ship doesn't "rise" (although, and this may be my ignorance, the foils on the pontoons may be able to address this?). Also I am not certain why there are 4 struts to the pontoons, wouldn't two long struts be more hydrodynamic?
Been a fan of SWATH vessels ever since I found out about this hull form. Seems an ideal hull-form for pleasure boats (yachts). Wonder why there aren't more of them.
Good question
@@YachtBuoyis it for sale sir.
They are relatively costly to build
@@gaycha6589 Do you have an idea of how much more expensive they are, in percentage terms?
I am extremely interested in this yacht i know it is own and not for sale how long would take to build a ship of this size and i wonder how much it would cost as of today. 20M
How is it different from a Catamaran?
Wow her GT is more then 55meter mono hull yachts. Thats crazy!
Not when you consider the volumetric size of the ship.
Morning YB. Yes, it's what we call a "Marmite" vessel. You either love it or hate it. Following superyacht videos for years i have never seen a catamaran design. (thank the lord you came along), I think the reason IS because it is a catamaran. How many have you seen? It is suffering from very, very few being out there for enough exposure. We are at a time in the evolution of vessels where monohull design is king, but as we have seen through history, things change. Take the design of the rear of superyachts. We went from "Canoe" stern to "Garage & swim platforms to now tender platforms coming through, (CdM Flexplorer & the one at Pendennis' yard). Catamarans' need to get more sexy and the likes of Sunreef will certainly help. The stability of this type of design is obvious BUT......as much as i like this vessel i have one reservation and that is it's beam. I feel i would be hard pressed to find visitors moorings that would accommodate such width. Another critique i have is its layout. As you know, architecture is about enclosing a space with the right proportions. The main salon on here seems to be too wide with a too low ceiling and for me looks claustrophobic. Rooms also need an intimacy which i felt the Big rooms lack. But as we've said before you and i, if i'm spending this kinda money i'll be customising big time. Off for me breakfast, laters.
Thanks for your comment 🙌 I always enjoy reading your perspective
Take a look at Metal Shark Yachts - they have a great 48mt recently released with enormous range and speed to outrun most trying weather conditions. They are also releasing a 70+ mt cat. Looking forward to seeing their yachts performing in rough seas. By accident, I came across a video of US Navy intercepting a ship in the Indian ocean and one of the vessels was a cat by this company. No reviews yet on these cats so looking forward to seeing some soon.
Whauu , stunnig Ship 👍👍👍 , also the price is moderate and not really expensive if you looking for a ship like this . I miss a bit some other features , like a crane and mini submarine , dont need a helipad , you can land with a russian Mi24 attack heli on this boat , thats crazy !-
Now that is a helicopter that I would love to see land on a superyacht lol
I've always thought the Cats they use as ferries up your way, would be awesome as a private boat, most are made here in Perth, Western Australia.
Especially the ones that can reach 40+ knots
@@YachtBuoy Yeah,perfect boats.
Great explorer, but I was a disappointed in the range for such a large store of fuel - but there is the argument that the compromise is a vast amount of space, with other explorer yachts having vast ranges, but much less space. I guess there is no such thing as the perfect ship, just the least compromised for the use-case.
There is one yacht which was converted from a warship. It has a range of 20,000 nautical miles.
600 tons. Probably that is the reason for the range.
lived on a 12m cat for 18 years would hate to return to a monohull and I would favour multi in bad weather everytime and we have been in some serious stuff
wow - 18 years! That is impressive! Which parts of the world did you visit?
I’m am dweeb…it says the NM range is about 3000 miles and San Diego to Honolulu is about the same… where and how do you fill up?
Can this Cat slice through the head and high waves?
She certainly can
SWATH vessels have been around for decades, and their sea kindliness is renowned. Unfortunately, this technology has not been applied extensively.I have worked on and sailed on a couple of them.
Why? I mean why _"this technology has not been applied extensively?"_
All I need now is the lottery ,now I found my boat
The Australians have a History of Designing and building large luxury cat yatch's and have manufactured them in vietnam.
Silver cloud is hugely luxurious but its massive beam brings penalties of drag and windage and its displacement furnished probably penalises its range.
I would be interested to see what form of propulsion it uses and see if it was propellor powered what effect fitting new high efficiency props would have ..and a given its huge area modeling what effect a hybrid power system would have.
Are there any submarines for civilian use to live on for sale?
Not that I am aware off. Most military submarines get decommissioned and either get sold to other navies or they get broken up. I have heard rumours of old Russian subs being laid up in disused naval basis, but you probably wouldn't want to live on one of them!
Guess we’re not going to the Bahamas in this puppy
Lekker man lekker
Is this yacht still available?? March 1, 2023
Why do we not see this design more??
Good question!
Awesome...cats are the best...
LOL It's not a Catamaran... it's a SWATH hull. Cats are great but SWATH is the best
100%
What is the drawback to this type of design for around the world cruising?
I think that finding places to come alongside but be a bit harder, owing to the size of her beam. Shallow water cruising would also be harder. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment.
In actual fact there is a website spefically about this vessel in which they describe a world cruise. It seems that in many places they had to anchor off shore owing to her beam and draught.Insuch cases they had to use their 34 ft. Sportfish/Tender
(Towed) to get ashore. For me though the biggest drawbacks are both her " comparatively" high fuel consumption and limited range even at a slowish speed of 10 knots.. I guess that I could hypothetically sacrifice one, but not both...?
Surprised only 3000nm range....at 10kts
Warren Buffets old boat, and she's absolutely gorgeous
I love boating but dislike heavy seas
I must admit, rough seas are not for everyone lol
@@YachtBuoy I need the right type of yacht with enough speed to get me to land or calmer waters.
A Canadian invention
🌟🌟🌟☝☝☝☝💪💪💪🙏🙏🙏
🙌
Most full displacement yachts aren't as good as this one.
Damn she be nice,..but she is a big girl!
Why have so many communal areas if there are only 3 guest cabins? It seems geared for day trips, yet has a large fuel capacity. This is a confusing yacht.
Those fins on the inside of the Bulbous Bow would be the first thing to get ripped off if you were heading into Arctic area's.
not enough range on it in my opinion
It has a disappointingly low speed for a SWATH. The whole point of SWATH is speed with stability; it's underpowered.
She was built to satisfy the wife who had a habit of being seasick saw her in West Palm Beach 5yrs ago
LOL Being seasick is not a habit... it's an affliction or an involuntary condition.
80000liters with 3500nm range gives 22liters to 1 nautical mile... that is rather pathetic efficiency.
Very practically.
And ugly as well.
I'm sorry.
A trimaran like Ad Astra has much higher fuel efficiency and an excellent sea capability as well.
I will have to check Ad Astra out - thanks for the recommendation
NO!
