    Just came across this and than you so much for this video! Me and my wife just got our 4 month Samoyed puppy and the puppy blues have hit us pretty hard in the first couple of days and have had similar feelings of puppy regret. She’s the sweetest girl but seeing her bark so much in the crate (we live in an apartment complex too) even though on the first day she slept nicely in the crate has been very confusing for us. We just let her sleep outside for now. We love her and want to do right by her but we do feel helpless at times.
    Thank you for making this video and helping us feel what we’re going through isn’t an isolated incident. Subscribed!
    P.S Olaf is truly a cuddly cute fluff bear 🤗

    I'm a long-time Samoyed owner, and our current boy Vai is a big energetic handful. He's the only Samoyed we've ever had that plays fetch and loves games with toys. The others were all really chill and slept or just sat and leaned on us all day. But Vai prefers play time. Lol. Never the less, Vai's an oddity. I've yet to meet a full-grown Sammy other than him who's not a chilled out love-bug. Enjoy!

      Vai sounds a lot like Olaf! Maybe they're distantly related lol. I don't think I've met a calm Samoyed just yet.

    Just about to have a 3year old Sammy and only now do i just feel he is relaxing better and maturing well. Defiantly taught me how to care for a baby too, if not even harder some days but totally worth it every second. I do not miss those sharp teethies lol

    • @theoandolaf
      @theoandolaf  2 года назад +1

      It's definitely been a lot easier for us as well. Olaf is now fully crate trained and he understands basic commands, but I would say our biggest challenge right now is trying to keep his attention when there are distractions. Once that leash is on him, his mind is somewhere else. But we've seen improvement within the last week when taking him for walks. I also do not miss his early puppy days where Olaf would bark for hours in his crate and potty in the house. Glad those days are gone! 🐾

  • @ACEDMagazine
    @ACEDMagazine 2 года назад +1

    LOL - My Samoyed is almost 13 weeks. Bully sticks help a lot with nipping. You can also put him in his crate when he won't stop biting. You have to do it without being mad or raising your voice. Just pick him up and gently put him in (I know easier said than done). Then once he calms down let him out. I have a ball on a rope so I can swing it around and tire her without killing me :) She likes to chase it and play tug of war. It helps with nipping because I can keep her chasing the toy without it being close to me physically so she is focused on that and not my ankles or toes. She does not do crates - she sleeps with me, but I keep her in her harness with leash so I can control where she goes on the bed so I do not have to worry about her finding a potty spot. Once she is older I won't have to do this. I typically wake up and then wake her up to go potty to prevent any accidents or even her need to bark or whine during the night. To help with barking you have to ignore them. Once they quiet down give them a treat. Give treats or attention whenever he is doing a behavior that is good. And give him nothing - no attention of any kind even talking - when he is bad. They hate when they don't get attention. Eventually he will learn when he barks he gets nothing and when he is quiet he gets rewarded with treats and attention. Mine has a sensitive tummy so I can only give her a limited type of treats (I use pupford freeze-dried chicken, beef liver, bully sticks and sweet potatoes - and I will boil chicken to use as treats as well). I have to use food that is made for sensitive tummies. Right now she is on royal canine. Does yours have a sensitive tummy?

    • @theoandolaf
      @theoandolaf  2 года назад

      Yes, he has a very sensitive stomach. We tried giving him goat milk, but that didn't work. We've also tried to transition Olaf to raw dog food, but that also didn't go so well.

    Adorable!! I’m getting mine in a week ❤️ A suggestion for the biting is to simply get up and walk away. A correction + any kind of touching is still giving him a reaction and will likely enforce that behaviour. Just a little suggestion that we learned in school (I’m a vet student). Best of luck with your cutie ❤️

    We’re currently at 8.5 weeks (picked Kumi our Sammy up at 7 weeks) and are having about the same experience you just described. She’s great when she’s great but the struggle is real adapting to Sammy puppy life. More than one “melt down” has occurred within our family since she’s arrived. A lot of work and tired all the time, about sums it up. Oh and don’t forget how board you can get just staring at them when no activities are available since it’s 100f outside…

    • @theoandolaf
      @theoandolaf  Год назад

      That sounds pretty brutal, but please know that it slowly gets easier in time if you are on top of its training. You're going to have to be extremely patient and I know that can be difficult at times. Keep working hard and I highly recommend getting a personal one on one trainer at around 7 months. It's definitely worth the money and it'll save you from so much stress. Also, definitely make sure Kumi is drinking a lot of water and is in an AC filled room when it's 100 degrees. I highly recommend using ice packs to help keep your pup cool. All I can say is that Olaf has certainly come a long way since this video was made. He still struggles with barking and focusing but I know those are manageable, so I'm not worried. You shouldn't be either. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask 🐾😺

      @@theoandolaf thank you for taking the time to reply, ya she lives on the ac vents when we’re not playing or training for sure, we’re grateful we have central air that’s for sure. I put a hard pack in with her during an evening nap last night, she liked it and we run a little fan right up next to her kennel to keep that extra cool for her too. We’re definitely counting on her getting easier and better over time as all puppies do but are working hard (frequent training) to fast track some of the biggies like coming when called, no bark, wait/stay, no bite and calm in her kennel. I think once we get her to sleep at least more than 2 hours at a time life will get much easier with her. I didn’t get more than 1.5 hours of consistent sleep last night for example and work full time in this heat, it’s proving quite challenging. Good thing we love her 😉

    The reality of having a puppy can set in pretty hard. I got my own first dog for mental health reasons, I was supposed to have a companion that could motivate me to get out of bed when things were tough. Though i definitely underestimated the impact of raising a pup on my own, my mental health actually worsened because of it lol. I said I’d never get a puppy again and that if I wanted a dog I’d get an adult. However I’m at it again four years later and I’m buying a Samoyed pupper, it gets easier with every dog you get and you learn from your previous mistakes. Plus I’m currently going to school for dog training so hopefully that helps. If anyone wants a puppy make sure you’re in a good mental space and you have someone else at your side helping, so you don’t feel like a complete failure when shit does go wrong.. hehe

    • @theoandolaf
      @theoandolaf  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your story and being honest with your experience. I agree that puppies can certainly take a toll on us, even if people don't have mental health issues. The constant noise, attention, and stress can really get to us, but things always get better in time with patience and endurance. Never giving up on the things you love is key. I hope you enjoy your new puppy! 🐾

    so I have had my 13 week old Samoyed Puppy since friday 15 July. I love my Ragdoll Cat who I have had for 12 years he is 12 and the love of my life, this puppy has the most loudest bark I have ever heard and he chases my cat who has slept outside since Friday all the cats whole house has gone which is really really truly making my heart so sad and I cannot bond with my Puppy. it was meant to be a special time instead my cat is hurting and this is hurting me, the puppy barks, bites, is loud,

    • @theoandolaf
      @theoandolaf  Год назад

      Hi again! I left a couple of long comments in the other video you responded to. But, just to add, Samoyed's are notorious for barking, especially high pitched barking. My ears certainly hurt after a sudden bark. Puppies definitely bark a lot, but try to understand why it's barking. Is it barking to play? Is it barking to get attention? Or is it barking because it's uncomfortable? We learned Olaf as a puppy was barking a lot because 1) he was in a new environment, 2) he was lonely and wanted to be around us 24/7, and 3) he was hot. Once we got Olaf an ice pack, the barking stopped. But try to see what's going on. Puppies certainly get FOMO, so it's important to give them as much attention as you can. I remember when Olaf would bark through the entire night. It was horrible for us and I'm sure it was horrible for Theo and our neighbors. The uncontrollable barking will pass. As for biting, make sure to not give it a reason to bite. Hands and fingers are not toys. If your dog begins to bite, give him something to bite like a chew toy. This is when you're going to have to really train your dog to control its bark and control other behaviors. There's going to be a lot of training involved, especially obedience school. I hope this helps. Samoyed's are the most talkative and challenging dogs to train, so be ready for the challenge and be patient. Your dog and cat will be fine in time.
