So shocking that "shell beach" is just a mural on a wall, and yet, behind the wall there is the answer to what the Dark City is.Incredible, underrated movie
Explain the meaning to me?
@@e.lizabeth Shell beach isnt a place, but only a mural on a wall, while the answer to what dark city is lies behind it, space, dark city was fabricated by the strangers, they arent on Earth
@Tattlebot oddly the Truman Show has a very similar ending and similar themes, came out same year i think or year before
@Tattlebot I don't mean that mate, the wall with the picture on breaking through that , yes it's out of perceived reality, but the actual scenery and how they break through is very similar. It happens In another film I think but I've forgotten it
@Tattlebot I'd like an example of there is
I love how once they get across the river, the buildings get more distorted and abstract. The aliens don't care about getting the details right in this part of the city because no one ever goes there.
The details in this movie, from set design to story concepts, are amazing.
Catzilla what happened to the police chief?
He's dead of suffocation. They make a point at 3:22 of showing them passing through some kind of barrier, which I'm guessing surrounds the entire city and keeps the air in. Otherwise, everyone would have been blown out through that hole in the wall as soon as they made it.
I always thought (at that moment) he realized what was happening. Horror and happiness at the same time (happiness that he was released from their hold, whomever he was.)
@@TheGoldcountry And finally, he knows the truth. Always important to a detective.
I cannot believe this movie is still so unknown. Literally in my top 5 ever.
Well you have a new fan here. I discovered this because I adore inception and just found out dark city was the main inspiration. Downloaded it and just watched it in glorious surround sound and loved every single second of it.
SPOILERS
I remember when I saw this movie for the first time and saw that scene. When Murdoch opens the door and there's that blue sky background and you think "at last, they're at that sunny Shell Beach", and you realize that the beach is just an old poster on a wall with a faint spotlight... the end of the city and the end of the world is just a frigging brick wall, there's nothing beyond that!! Awesome movie.
conatcha If there was nothing there wouldn't be a beach. I like so much this movie because like Brazil for example, it leaves you to make your own mind about the end which I think is what is waiting for us after the decay of the body : a world of endless possibilities. I want for our world to realize that while we are alive and that this world of possibilities is still at our reach in our human form. But this is my choice.
So many emotions in that one section of the movie. Joy at finally reaching Shell Beach and then disappointment as your heart drops....anger and cheering as the wall is destroyed and then your jaw drops. I agree, amazing movie.
@@jonathanc6431 lol, you mean like in national lampoons vacation?
Whats beyond the brick wall? A flame of Olympus?
I first saw this movie in the worst way possible: On TV, interrupted by tons of commercials, edited all to hell, and with the crappy narration at the beginning, and I was STILL riveted the entire time. I freakin' love this movie!
"Shell Beach."
"Yeah we never made to Shell Beach."
"Shell Beach."
"Exactly, buddy, yeah. The place we never got to."
"Shell Beach."
"Ok, now your just starting to bum me out, Patrick."
We seen the pencil line already lol. It's wiggly when the double dot fell
This scene will stick with me forever. Crazy crazy scene and crazier implications
This is one of my favorite movies. It's the movie the late Philip K. Dick would have made. Dick specialized in what came to be known as the "reality breakdown" genre. This movie stands with the blockbusters Total Recall and Blade Runner - both of which dealt with people questioning the reality of their existence - and Dark City's payoff was the best of them all.
This film is a classic !
🙀 popo
"Shell beach" is written but the letter S is in the shadow so you can read "Hell beach"
Tychki i always noticed that too
Or for “Hell Bitch” !! 😂
Life's a beach, and then you die. 🏖️
Great detail.
Brilliant observation. Also this ending is very similar to the ending of the Truman Show, similar themes too
Love this scene and the overall sad undertone of the film. The fact that they can't even remember where they came from is especially heartbreaking. No concept of time or self, and no way of returning home.
Yes it has a bittersweet ending. They're free from the aliens, but the future is completely unknown.
But on the other hand, at the end of the movie the survivors have not conceived the full potential of the alien machines beneath the city. Maybe there is even a way going back to Earth. At least the downfall of the alien totalitarianism gave the people of Dark City the prospect of future, hope and making a home.
Is it better to live a long life of blissful ignorance, or give your life in return for knowing the truth of your existence for a moment? Bumstead knows the answer, poor bastard.
If your memory gets erased every few hours, it doesn't matter if you actually live a long life. Just get Kiefer Sutherland to squirt you full of memories of a long life at that point.
This is one of my all time favorites. The story is great, but they got the overall feel of this film down perfectly and I just havent ever seen anything quite like it
This is my favourite film, and I love Sewell's performance, how he delivers his lines as if he's on the verge of cracking "Shell Beach...Uncle Karl...what about this? It was blank when I found it!"
..RIP william hurt.. .altered states, body heat, the big chill, childern of a lesser god, dark city, lost in space, A.I., the village, a history of violence, into the wild, the incredible hulk, captain america civil war, avengers endgame, vantage point..
RIP indeed. 😔
Crazy to think that he played Betty Ross's dad General Ross in the MCU, while Jennifer Connolly played Betty Ross in Ang Lee's non-MCU 2003 Hulk film.
He was quite the intellectual; I’ve a great respect for who he was, the time he came from(much older than me), and his work. No actor today could match his energy. Distinctness
I love this movie. There is so much mystery to each individual and what role they play in that city.
This scene and the scene from The Truman Show are similar
@oshe cy and what scene is that?

This scene is the thought that crosses my mind when Truman 'walks out of the show' in the Jim Carrey movie as to what could in fact be waiting for him outside the door in my darker moments...
I'm sure Shell Beach is a play on words for Shell Breach, it's where the protagonist (literally) and the viewer (figuratively) break through to the other side.
May we all breach our own shell...

0:29 So sad. They don't even know they're from Earth. The Strangers even took that from them.
Plot twist: all the humans in Dark City were abducted from pre-spaceflight Kobol and eventually Murdoch's descendants Tuned the whole vivarium into the primitive-human-populated planet the Galactica lands on at the end of the reboot. (I haven't watched this movie in almost 20 years so if I'm forgetting something that completely upends my dumb joke, please remind me)
Very great movie.
Una de las mejores scenas que haya visto jamás, película de culto
Is very strange that a kind of Flat Earth (or Space-Station or a mix of both) appears two times in the two movies of Proyas ("Gods of Egypt", more evident the flat-earth in according with the egyptian mythology).
The demiurge loves it when his prisoners debate on whether it's flat or round, round or flat...never realizing that it's a prison all the same.
The world we live in!
Such a sad fate for the detective.
Detective goes out like a champ
In Robert Monroe’s 3RD book “Ultimate Journey”, he describes his out of body journey to what he calls the Great Emitter. His urge to go “home” was so strong at that point that he was drawn to the place where we all exit this realm of experience when we are complete. The Emitter radiates an energy that creates the physical reality that we experience. Beside the Emitter is the Aperture that is the exit point from this reality. What is on the other side may be undetermined at this point. Some may have passed through that Aperture, but they have undoubtedly moved on to other adventures.

I was married on Shell Beach, CA. ...by Pismo.
Before Matrix , we had dark city
I love this Movie so much.
there is merits to the metaphor
Oh dear. Looks like Shell Beach is a bit too cold this time of the year.
Need a new picnic spot idea I guess.
"Earth" is the Dark City and we are the protagonists.
I mean it's obviously an allegory like the Truman Show movie and the song Hotel California. We are trapped in a dark place, I know it doesn't look that grim and dark like the Dark City does, but when you look beneath the shiny canvas this is a world of darkness and cruelty in which we are trapped and like the characters of "Dark City" we don't know where we came from, none of us do, but very few of us do have the lingering feeling that this is not our home and that there is something fishy about our "reality". I wish I could smash down the walls of this illusory farce even if there is a gaping nothingness behind it...just for a little moment of satisfaction.
That's not earth you flat dolts out there, it's a space-station.
More like a habitat/zoo
Or both.
So says that earth isn't a space station?
@RandomJaden RJ I believe I meant to say, "who says the earth isn't a space station?"... but yea, I understand that the entire place was a habitat. My thing is, the truth might be stranger than fiction, haha
I'm glad I didn't watch the theatrical cut. Although I did have an inkling of what was going on.
FLAT EARTH MUCH?

Domesticated dogs when they figure out that the humans they live with aren't also dogs and that the sprawling suburban hellscape they share isn't their ancestral home
Dogs don’t have the same intelligence and understanding as human. Even then they’d probably wouldn’t give a shit since they would be dead in the wild.
This happened in the United States 2021. 2016. 2023.
If I say anymore would be unbelievable.
@ 0:33...I'll tell you where...
From Eden.
There just so happens to be not one, but two sledgehammers just lying there!
I'm pretty sure those are pipes. Or probably Murdoch created them with his gift. Who cares??? It's hell of a movie. Only an idiot will care to nitpick that insignificant detail
A metaphor for the 3D spiritual/material realm we live in. A constant battle between the rulers who control the knowledge and hold our past from us so that we may never attempt to enlighten ourselves as it should be. Constant cycles and no memory of the past lives. Existing only for the material. But at some point we will all find that next step and the knowledge will be released.

+TheGoldcountry - I agree. This is such a cool movie. Actually, are these people or rejuvenated corpses. Is John Murdoch the only person who sees the truth. I saw this 2 times. I'm still trying to get a total handle on it. Great movies are ones that make you think. This does that.
Theo Lamp There was that one detective who went *"crazy"* and he was drawing symbols and shit. He knew what was going on and they were coming after him.
I don't remember if he killed himself or if they killed him.
Always laughed at the scene where Bumstead floats away. It's beyond ridiculous the way the camera shows how he is floating away lol.
Ikr. That's not how space works. Every tissue in his body would suffocate due to the lack of oxygen right before he freezes due to the extremely freezing temperatures of space.
@@alexvazquez2871 LOL. "That's not how space works" Outer space is just a concept of science fiction, so it's whatever the author wants it to be. Well if you really know what this world is... If you're a college student whose mind gets blown away when watching Cosmos, you have a long way to go.
Its to show that he saw was nothing but the size of a small city. Not the size of earth, he saw they were on a small terraformiship ship....not a planet. He died with seeing the final truth.

When the detective drifts In space, shouldn't he be like in pain freezing and getting crushed n shit... cz from the looks of it he's enjoying the view lol
St Buddha technically if he was breathing out slowly he’d have 90 seconds before he froze and burned to death simultaneously
T OB 90 is the absolute maximum at least from the textbooks I’ve been reading but unless someone actually test it out it’s still technically theoretical
He wouldn't burn or freeze to death. His tears and saliva on the lips and in the mouth would boil but it would not burn or scald him or cause pain by boiling away. He won't freeze as heat loss requires molecules to transfer heat. Years he would technically lose heat through radiation but he'd died long long before his body went cold.
He'd die of asphyxia. Meaning he'd struggle to breath but more so, he'd get hypoxia and fall unconscious and die.
His skin may bloat slightly which would feel strange and perhaps a little uncomfortable, but he would not burst, explode or rupture in pain.
PierreShark amazing, thanks for the info

He manifested the ability to his son's memory before their memories were taken. The city was theirs until the strangers took it from them.
Probably Earth. They were abducted by the that people to populate this ship/fake city experiment.
They were abducted from Earth and brought to the City.

Only thing is, we can not break God firmament.
The question in Dark City is "Have you been to Shell beach?" In reality, it's "Have you been to Antarctica? Did you make it to the other side?" The truth is none of us have been there to explore it to realize that you can't get past Antarctica. It is the ring that rules this world.

I love the metaphor of Shell Beach --- whenever you ask anyone a question like -- "do you think Obama was a good president -- or if Hillary and the Clintons are good -- people say yes and then you ask them to name 3 good things they have done and the caveat is you can't say Obamacare unless you buy your own health insurance. Guess what? Most people can't say ONE THING. This is what happens when you listen to TV narratives and politician talking points there is no substance. I am neither democrat or republican -- but the Democrats really think Obama and Clintons are good and reality they did more destruction to middle and working class people than the Republicans ever could have. NAFTA, Welfare reform, deregulation of Wall St all under Clinton. Obama gave us corporate medicine, bigger military spending in Afghanistan, Bailed out Wall St, and under him we saw the RISE of the Tech surveillance state monopolies. NOT GOOD. Trumpers are the same -- Trump never helped any Americans -- he gave corporate America big tax break, just rebuilt old wall and never extended, gave huge money to military -- Never put Hillary or anyone in jail -- they are all the same.
WTF??
and they will be always the same , all of them
They're hardly the same. One party (Democrats) are doing everything they can to destroy America and destroy the livelihood and soul of Americans. Trump did what he could to put America first and make American lives better. He actually accomplished a lot given that all of Washington, the corporate media, big tech, Hollywood, academia, and the unions, public school system, etc. were against him and tried to destroy him for over 4 years. He made mistakes but he still tried. I'm an independent voter but you're never going to convince me that both parties are the same, because one is dangerous and very nefarious.
Or when you asked them why is water always flat when not manipulated. They get anxious and resort to the official narrative.
I mean, like... yes, a president is little more than a symbol for an era, but trump has the unique distinction of having made the worst citizens actively and endlessly awful for real Americans, and that does matter.
Flat earth baby
