"Peg" written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen
Originally from the Steely Dan album: Aja
I'm reading comments and this band is not out of tune or...off.A live performance is exactly that. Its not master mixed and every blemish removed in a studio. It's a very talented group playing without cheat sheets and lyrics in front of them.Which even Donald Fagan does.(not putting down chord sheets or lyrics I do it when needed also).and nailed a song most bands couldn't play. I am a trained musician and and I heard every one hit their marks.Once again this is not the album version it is a group of talented musicians doing their thing .. rock on
@MrFourToTheBar It's an adventure that I'd begun some 30 years ago...and am still diving! I used to play in a jazz-rock, blues 'n funk band on the West coast (not the area/region that immediately comes to mind), and when our band founder and leader said, "Okay, dudes, we enter a new era: we're going to be adding Steely Dan into our repertoire, so I'm adding a horn section, too." I still remember taking a massive gulp, and then went about undertaking a musical exploration and undertaking that's been akin to a lifelong gift. It forced me to get back into sight-reading, playing what I hear, and improving what I thought were my already very good rhythmic abilities. Enjoy the journey, it'll be worth every frustrating moment, I promise!
100%. I grew up in a household of musicians and Steely Dan set the standard. The fact alone that these folks are pretty well note for note with some embellishments in the guitar solo, should shut the haters up.
"I'm reading comments and see some haters in the room." "I'm reading comments and see some no-talent, armchair, non-musician, envious KB-warriors in the room." FIFY ;)
I agree. This band is doing something that even Steely Dan didn't do until late in their careers, play a live show.
Anyone bitching probably can’t play a c major chord on piano. This is phenomenal cover. And I’m a lousy musician but I try.
They are walking on holy ground and this is a very respectable performance. Special kudos to the guitar solo.
That bass guitarist. She rules
I could barely hear it
Was expecting a disaster when I saw Steely Dan cover. Just got totally blown away! Guitarist, vocals, bass, harmonies... Wow! Unbelievable talent, all of them!
I thought the same thing the first time i found someone covering them turns out i found some great cover bands

Not your average bar band. My brother Rick played on 3 Dan records including the songs Don’t Take Me Alive. Peg. Time Out Of Mind and others. Google these maniacs. They’re all monster players ...
@@jerrymarottadrums i
I wasn't expecting one, because: 1. The Marotta bros. 2. Live at Daryl's House. Nice.
the name marotta was not familiar to you? and of course daryl only has chumps play at his house . that's OK, u redeemed yourself w the last comment
The Bass player is in her own universe. Well done!!
I certainly can tell by listening to her playing, but if you look at her you truly realize she's living in her own space fearlessly. I got to respect this combination.
Who's mom is that playing the hell out of the bass? Well done, Madame. Not everyone can walk with the gods. This band just did. Beautiful piece of work.
Who's Mom I wish I could play like her !
That's Jennifer Maidman. Google her for the surprise.
Actually grandma
Jenifer is killing the bass. I love this ! It's fantastic music! It needs to be played and loved! Thanks
Late to the party, this just showed up in my feeds. Yeah, she is really good, shifting between styles seamelessly. How is it I hadn't seen/heard her before?
-dave
Steely Dan is your favorite band’s favorite band.
Ain't that the truth
Right on!
NRBQ
Trooth
it's 1 of my top 5 favorite bands too.
I LOVE THE LADY BASS PLAYER!!
Nice job with the guitar solo
Larry Carlton is a hard act to follow and dude freakin' nailed it!
@@riblets1968 Jay Graydon actually👍🏻
That's Jesse Gress ❤️
JESSE IS A GENIUS!!!!
Recreating a classic like Peg this good is no easy feat and a high water mark for rare talent that can pull it off this well. Kudo's to the performers.
Steely Dan is difficult to capture and this group did it very well. Their dissonant harmonies and sophisticated melodies are just so unique and a good ear and great musicians seems to have made it happen!!
jay graydon would be proud of this guitar solo. fine job people!
Agreed
nailed it with panache!
Well, I posted about it above before seeing your comment. I disagree. Very good guitarist, but he played around with it too much. There’s a video on the tube of Jay teaching Tim Pierce (I believe) how to play it. This guy should give it a watch.
I saw Steely Dan live twice. I expected to be dissatisfied with the sound quality, because they are a magnificent studio band. I was blown away by how great those shows were. Grade A+++
I saw them live last year at the Orpheum in Boston, the sound mix was the best I have ever heard at a live show
Seen them many times, as well as Fagan's solo tours and with the Dukes of September - always a super show.
I saw them in Vegas just before Walter passed. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.
I’ve seen them four times (would have been five this past June but Covid canceled it). Their shows are among the best live of any band. Different arrangements on many songs but the vibe is true to original.
I've seen them 3 times in St. louis and they never disappointed!
As a full time musician of thirty five years, musical snob and huge fan of the Dan, I can truly appreciate that. Well played, and that's not easy. After all it's a song from the masters. Not at all schlocky. Straight forward representation. Thank you for it.
Well said! As a 10th-11th grader, ‘Aja’ opened my mind & ears to what great sounds like, and I proceeded to buy up any Steely Dan record, cassette, even recording straight off the radio, and later, replenish a collection w/ CDs, and later still with mp3. They’re also the motivation (along with Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler) to pick up my guitar and start playing again, after far too many years! That said, to Mr. Drew's comment - agreed "it ain't easy!” I've resigned
myself to the fact that I’d need more than one lifetime to reach that level of expertise but I’ll just keep trying, regardless.
it's unbelievable how such a talented band post this outstanding live perfomance viewed by more then 20 thousand times so far and get only 164 likes.. on top of that: 8 dislikes.. it's a truly underrated recognition and heartbreaking IMHO...
couldn't agree more!
Thx Gabriel
Yeah it's very sad to see....
Now a days you tubers just make videos on India given we have good population and uplod some rubbish... ...
Very few can match this talent...
I know ... it’s wild. Anyway, we do it for the love of playing and the music. For those who are disappointed with our rendition all I can say is I’m sorry ... oh, and Blow Me!
@@jerrymarottadrums I bought every SD album as soon as it came out on vinyl, or later as a CD, and listened all the time. I saw SD play outside SCranton, PA in about 2004 and the band was like one huge well-integrated instrument. Unbelievable. And YOU GUYS ARE JUST GREAT! I play enough guitar to know how hard it is. Anyone who criticizes the great and original and honest job you do is ignorant. I've seen other cover bands on RUclips that arent nearly as good, including one hyper-slick team with a self-involved singer tht I couldnt bear. Keep it up!
Wild version of the solo. Axe player looks inches from disaster at all times yet he pulls it off. Excellent
I am THE biggest Steely Dan fan that there is and these talented musicians NAILED it! Slam dunk!!!
Rick Marotta, laying it down in prime fashion. So glad to catch him playing his signature tune live. Rick, you haven’t lost a step. Beautiful groove, I will be forever grateful to you for this groove. You’re my hero! Letting that right hand just drop...gorgeous groove.
Thanks, Jerry!
Holy crap - that IS Rick Moratta! I haven't seen him since the Behind The Music episode on VH1 on Steely Dan...what.. 20 years ago? Damn we're getting old. But Rick has always been one of my favorites. Glad to see he's still playing
I love Steely dan... Isso love Reelin'the yers !
Loving the bass lady ... 🎺🎶🎸
Fantastic "Peg" Steely Dan cover.
That solo was spot on with his own twist very nice
I've never heard a better cover of this or any other song by Steely Dan. And I've been a musician forever. Absolutely stellar.
I just love "Live at Daryl's House" it just looks like fun! Great musicians jamming together
Very,very,very,very,very,very..nicely done😎....!!!!!!
That guitar solo was spot on!!!!
Jennifer kills it on bass. This is one of those (Chuck Rainey) bass anthems and she kicks ass. nice job!!
That was ridiculously wonderful.....
Note Jenifer Maidmann on bass. Her writing, arraigning, production credits cover 46 years, collaborations with numbers top musicians. Never mind here work outside music.
Funny you say that, I was just noting her. Holding down that SICK groove, jack the bass, this woman smells like FUNK!!!!!
She is definitely a player 👍
No nonsense straight forward and gets the job done well 🎸🎶😎
She's GREAT...Player saying so here.

Sounds so much like the original. Their voices are spot on. Bravo……
WOW WOW..Daryl can put anything together..damn near perfect of one of the most complicated musical groups of all time
Been playing live since '74- that crushed !!! I would LOVE to sit in with these cats, unfortunately I play drums! " Ah, excuse me, Mr. Marotta..."
Sounds very tight, great musicians. Sounds as good as the real thing.
Best cover I’ve ever heard. I’ve listened to hundreds of them. It’s like you reincarnated their voices. I was taken a back. Simply amazing. Bravo. 👏👏👏
...well, you DO have the original drummer playing it here, Rick Marotta on reader’s left
You guys killed it.Hey Guitar player you nailed a very complex guitar solo.good job
I find it amazing how all these various individuals can get together - With one goal ! - With the love of one sound ! - Then set too -To recreate the wonderful sounds of Becker & Fagen - The duo - The catalyst that spawned a million line ups (well not far off I bet) of their own & tribute bands
This Band has it together & hits the nail on the head with its own sounds of Steely Dan
We musicians are that way.
That was absolutely fantastic , most enjoyable.Musicianship unquestionable. This collection of musicians are at the top of their game.I feel privileged to have been able to view and hear such a wonderful performance.Thak you for posting this . ATB from Scotland.
I love how they all feeling the music. Rhythm section has it. Lead vocals are fantastic. Love the female singers harmonies and a wonderful voice. Drummers totally in the pocket, horns well done and the bass player killing it w/ some nice solid groove playing...did I miss anything,lol....Id love to see them live...
I do believe that the drummer is the same person who played on the record and that this is his RUclips channel.
Me too
Reelin' In The Years is performing our first post lock-down show on Saturday, July 24th Live at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY. We hope to see you there, it's been much too long!
Come to Joliet Il , our KOOL is getting low and we need a JOLT !!!
And the Rialto has some Serious acoustical chops
Great job!!!
Great sounding jam.
That is a stunning performance. All excellent musicians, but that bass player is off the scale of awesome!!!
AWESOME Guitar solo!!!!
Tone PERFECTO!!!!!
Wow … superb ! Great vocal !!
Unbelievable. I was totally blown away with the guitar solo I just wasn't expecting it to be spot on like the album
He was a tiny bit fast but not criticizing. I’m sure he was freaking pumped up!! And his shirt rules!! Awesome job!
Really good cover, much better than i expected
Always something musically special at Daryl House ! & These guys are No exception !
I bet Daryl has a sign somewhere ! - Like when you ride the coasters & a sign at the entrance says 'You have to be this tall to use this ride' - Daryls sign will say :- 'YOU HAVE TO BE THIS GOOD TO USE THIS VENUE' ! - His guests never let you down ! Thanks Daryl !
Walter Becker would be so proud....
Bass player really makes this great!
Freaking fantastic!!!
Wish I'd get an invite to Daryl's house to listen to great music like this!
It's a big no no to do a Steely Dan cover but this band pulls it off. They jam. I'd love to see them live.
So spot on! Few bands can pull off a SD cover, these folks nail it and make it their own...as it should be!
I know what you mean, but the did a great job. :)
@@picardmadeoff1068 I've found a cover band called Brooklyn Charmers that really do a great job. As an example, here's a link to their cover of My Old School...
ruclips.net/video/3W1HkqrvHS4/видео.html
They have many more but typically not any of the songs with horns as there are not any horn players in their band.
@daddyrichten I agree 100%. Joe Jackson is the only person that even comes close to doing a proper cover.
Amazing band !
The "Geezers" get it down! The guitar lead, sooooo close. Gr8 job the on this you ALL!
As a keyboard player who played his first paying gig in 1967 (no, I don't sight read) I am blown away. This is not an easy song by any means. Vocals are right on the money and the lead guitar just nailed it. And the funk is there. Excellent stuff, and live to boot. My highest compliments to every single person in this excellent band.
LOL! I've been playing to this for weeks and then--ZOINK!--I realized it was THE Marotta brothers! There's some creds right there!
On a 'Peg' kick, tonight, and this rocked! Great job by all.
As a fan and seen them live twice well done thank you just wonderful
Look at Grandma go! The whole band is insanely good.
hey easy bro, she is younger than I am! :)
Jesse Gress from Todd Rundgren's band! Guitar teacher extraordinaire
Great job y'all...
You don't want to mess with steely Dan but the guys nailed it as good as you can do even being notches below the original great job
The great Jesse Gress on guitar. Miss him miss him miss him.❤🎵🙌
better solo than Herrington
Damn nice to cover a band that anyone will tell you is tough to say the least. Lovely performance guys!!
Everything at Daryl's house is the best rock music anywhere.
Wow they did a great rendition!! Of Peg.great verizon wow!!✨👑🤗✨
Awesome job covering my favorite band of all time! Bravo!!! 🙌🏻 🎉💕
Good musicians, for sure-I'd have stayed away-btw, the guitar solo was right on, fwitw
Surprisingly excellent cover of my favorite band ever.
Really solid !!! Great job to everyone in this band on a difficult song to play
It would be difficult for anyone to capture exactly the sound of Steely Dan, they are so remarkable. Plus the guitar and vocals are so unique to Becker and Fagan.
Sounds Great You Guys!!! Nice Guitar Solo He Nailed It!!!
I keep coming back to this video. Great cover.
I love this version of Peg. 💙
Daryl did it again!! Good cover of the Steely Dan classic!
The bass player stands out in that group of rather talented musicians
This is a 'cover' that these fine musicians can be very proud of !!! Not an easy tune at-all to do.
Fair play to anyone thinking 🤔 of doing steely Dan cover , you have to be good and that was superb well done 👍
WOW!!!!! Perfectly done! :) :) :)
These are so refreshing since I have not seen my band babies in forever. I love shooting live performers who are actually in love with what they do. Thank you for sharing!!!
Wonderful cover, one of the best on YT.
I just love seeing musicians coming together and performing great songs. I am always in awe of their talent. And I am really digging the song choices. Thank you all.
Great job with the solo. Not easy that one.
Very sweet!
Big mama rockin that bass now!!
Spectacular
Not an easy song to cover
Love it
Great job! The guitar solo was outstanding, too, I just wish he would have played the outro solo as well.
Bloody superb. Thank you.
You guys sound great! For the life of me, I don’t know why brass instruments don’t show up in modern music more than they used to. Your covers are solid stuff. Great work!
Great cover... Great band.... Keep going...
thats freakn awsome///love it
And what's especially cool is that Rick is playing his signature Yamaha Rick Marotta "Hip Gig" kit and Jerry who is the younger brother is playing the bigger "Al Foster Hip Gig Sr." drum kit- and both brothers and kits sound superb!
We’re both playing Hip Gig Kits
This is fantastic. Smile on my face.
Nice cover. Steely Dan is one of my favs and their music can be complex. Nice job.
Can we ever here and see this band in Europe? Steely Dan wrote magnificent music, but this band is even more magnificent. Jazz/blues, it seems so easy for this wonderful band.
Thanks for all these beautiful performances 👍👍
Takes me back to my old stompin grounds on Long Island... Thank you 🤩
Love the bassist. Pretty much carries the whole song.
guitar solo wow insane great
Nice work on the bass!🎵🎵
