Burns from this “candy” are happening to adults as well. This is obviously the fault of the person who made the video…they didn’t point out the risks. I touch my normal food all the time to check if it’s hot enough when cooking in the microwave and I don’t get burned….but this “candy” is different because it’s sticky and sticks to the skin and keeps burning the skin. If people aren’t warned about this they might not know this will happen….and this is the fault of the video maker for not putting a warning in the video about sticky hot foods.

Please for the love of sanity and your life….read stuff before you do something. Quick rule of thumb here regardless of what you’re pulling out from the microwave…if it’s in a glass, ceramic or melamine if it’s been in the microwave for more than 1:30 it’s probably going to be scorching hot (the vessel, maybe not the contents in there of) and should always be used with hot pads or mitts. Now as an ex-candy maker I would just let you know there is a REASON people have to wear leather gloves when handling HOT SUGAR…molten lava…please use common sense and do minimal research before doing any project no matter how benign it may seem (is 10 minutes of research really not worth this kind of damage control?)

Well, duh. Hot heavy syrup. It clings to the skin and does not cool quickly. It's going to burn deeply. A shallow bowl is a big mistake. Use a deep pyrex measuring cup so it doesn't slosh all over you. And protect your hands. Npmight want to protect countertops, too, if not heatproof. Whatever you heat it in will get very hot. Kitchens used to have candy thermometers to get your syrup to the perfect temp for the results you want. The hotter, the harder the hard candy will be. Batches and batches of colorful, flavorful glass candy for holiday gifting. Popcorn balls, toffee bars and fudge. Dad made the fudge. All those spritz cookies! I was so excited when I was finally old enough to help make popcorn balls. The caramel syrup was HOT and you had to work quickly.

So is this mother being charged with neglect?
Because it’s pretty irresponsible for the mother to melt candy down and let the children play with it unsupervised or even melt it down and then let them retrieve it from the microwave as if plates and stuff. Don’t get hot when they’re in the microwave. …..
This is legit neglect. This mother thought she could have her child do something unsupervised that definitely needs to be supervised in an attempt to get some peace and quiet away from her kid.

Embarrassing folks. How is CPS not involved for incompetency as a parent. Why are we lauding this parent as a hero for putting their kid in that dangerous situation?

Honestly this should be a child negligence case. Anyone who “doesn’t know” molten sugar is hot or let’s a child handle it should be evaluated regardless. Her inability to take responsibility definitely makes the negligence case stronger.

I went to cooking school and worked in kitchens for 10+ years. Nothing scares me more than sugar work, even more than boiling oil.
The fact this is being promoted to average people as a "fun idea" is INSANE.

I'm not a professional baker but I've baked enough to know that candy is not something I'm ready to attempt yet. I turned 25 yesterday, so you know that children shouldn't be anywhere near a kitchen if you're going to make candy. If I do get there, eventually, I'm not letting an inch of skin be exposed.

Not only is the Mom blaming Tictoc, so many of these comments that say the tictoc video person should have explained that the melted candy would be "HOT" and to wear oven mitts. Really. Maybe the maker of the video thought people might be smart enough to realize that. I'm saying that to the people getting burned and letting their kids get burned and to the people whose comments saying the video needed to explain what should have been self explanatory. People, please, stop.

This should never be done in a microwave. Few things are going to be able to survive being microwaved to that temperature. Also a microwave has a higher chance of being somewhere higher than a stovetop so it can be more difficult grab or more risky if it spills. All of that in combination with a microwave being so common this trend is scary. I don’t think a lot of people understand how hot candy can get or think about what sticky hot candy does when it gets on skin. That’s like 300F held on your skin for serval minutes.
