Sugar syrup or melted candy is so much worse than that. It gets hotter, it holds that heat, and it sticks to the skin. I make homemade fudge as gifts, and when my kids were small it was kept aeay from them until it was cool enough.

Quick rule of thumb here regardless of what you’re pulling out from the microwave…if it’s in a glass, ceramic or melamine if it’s been in the microwave for more than 1:30 it’s probably going to be scorching hot (the vessel, maybe not the contents in there of) and should always be used with hot pads or mitts. Now as an ex-candy maker I would just let you know there is a REASON people have to wear leather gloves when handling HOT SUGAR…molten lava…please use common sense and do minimal research before doing any project no matter how benign it may seem (is 10 minutes of research really not worth this kind of damage control?)

Batches and batches of colorful, flavorful glass candy for holiday gifting. Popcorn balls, toffee bars and fudge. Dad made the fudge. All those spritz cookies! I was so excited when I was finally old enough to help make popcorn balls. The caramel syrup was HOT and you had to work quickly.

I went to cooking school and worked in kitchens for 10+ years. Nothing scares me more than sugar work, even more than boiling oil. The fact this is being promoted to average people as a "fun idea" is INSANE.

This should never be done in a microwave. Few things are going to be able to survive being microwaved to that temperature. Also a microwave has a higher chance of being somewhere higher than a stovetop so it can be more difficult grab or more risky if it spills. All of that in combination with a microwave being so common this trend is scary. I don’t think a lot of people understand how hot candy can get or think about what sticky hot candy does when it gets on skin. That’s like 300F held on your skin for serval minutes.

Honestly this should be a child negligence case. Anyone who “doesn’t know” molten sugar is hot or let’s a child handle it should be evaluated regardless. Her inability to take responsibility definitely makes the negligence case stronger.
I went to cooking school and worked in kitchens for 10+ years. Nothing scares me more than sugar work, even more than boiling oil.
The fact this is being promoted to average people as a "fun idea" is INSANE.
I'm not a professional baker but I've baked enough to know that candy is not something I'm ready to attempt yet. I turned 25 yesterday, so you know that children shouldn't be anywhere near a kitchen if you're going to make candy. If I do get there, eventually, I'm not letting an inch of skin be exposed.

It's not the trend's fault that parents are stupid. Melting candy isn't new, and it should be common sense that kids shouldn't handle hot sugar.

Sugar burns are some of the worst burns, it gets hot and stays hots. Not something to mess around with at home with children.
Working with molten sugar can be dangerous. It's really not a child friendly activity.
Not only is the Mom blaming Tictoc, so many of these comments that say the tictoc video person should have explained that the melted candy would be "HOT" and to wear oven mitts. Really. Maybe the maker of the video thought people might be smart enough to realize that. This should never be done in a microwave. Few things are going to be able to survive being microwaved to that temperature. Also a microwave has a higher chance of being somewhere higher than a stovetop so it can be more difficult grab or more risky if it spills. All of that in combination with a microwave being so common this trend is scary. I don’t think a lot of people understand how hot candy can get or think about what sticky hot candy does when it gets on skin. That’s like 300F held on your skin for serval minutes.
