I prefer this version. The studio version is nice, but I think there's too much Keith in it and it takes away from the guitar.

Emerson Lake and Palmers set at Cal Jam in 1974. Greg had a little acoustic segment within their show. Just casually sitting on a stool singing, playing a 12 string acoustic guitar and singing his ass off while chewing gum and wearing sequins in front of about half a million people here. Just another day in the life of an early 70's rock legend superstar....You reacted to Lucky Man a few days back. That was Greg singing a song he wrote when he was 12.

As someone who was raised by a man who is maybe the most qualified person on earth to write an ELP biography - a true historian of the band and all three men as individuals - i think I've seen every single video of ELP that exists in the public realm. The only time I've ever seen Greg Lake perform live without gum in his mouth is a video from when he was still the lead singer of King Crimson, singing the song "Cat Food" on Top of the Pops in 1970. It's available on RUclips. I've always remembered the details of it, because it shocked me to see him sing without gum!
Greg Lake is one of the rare vocalists who possesses a voice that is "dually resonant." That refers to when a singer can access all areas of their vocal chords regardless of the note they're landing on, which makes it almost sound like two people are singing. He can sing as a pure tenor or as a pure baritone if he chooses, but when he is singing full-throated you can hear tenor and baritone concurrently. That's what gives his voice such a roundness and a haunting quality. Listen to his song "I Believe In Father Christmas" or ELP's "Ce La Vie" for great examples of his dual resonance.

Here is that King Crimson video - it's a trip for many reasons. Bizarre lyrics, a wild melody, a guitarist who is so expressionless that he looks like a mannequin. Truly bizarre! 😂 ruclips.net/video/CVjJ-h75kwo/видео.html

My husband was a musician and he told me the reason for the gum chewing was to keep their mouths moist while they were singing instead of drying out. Before someone slams me for saying this, check out John Lennon on the rooftop concert at Abbey Road. He's chewing gum.
I also wish someone would talk about his perfect picking on that 12. He was a master. Playing acoustic with a 6 is hard enough. ❤️🎸🏏

Greg Lake (RIP) was one third of the group Emerson Lake and Palmer, the other two members being Keith Emerson (RIP) on Keyboards and Carl Palmer on Drums. Greg played both Guitar and Bass on some songs, but mostly Guitar, he was also the Vocalist. "Still you Turn Me On" was his biggest solo hit, but ELP had quite a few hits, such as "Lucky Man", "Welcome Back My Friends", "Karn Evil 9". There is great footage of ELP during the winter at the Montreal Olympic Stadium playing their asses off.

I think he is describing his own life in fame.
Maybe a note to his legion of female fans that try to be evrrything fir him abd it just doesnt matter to him.
His life is crazy enough without adding crazy to the mix.
And i think its also his own reasoning to choosing this kind of crazy rock n roll lifestyle...which at times he wants to throw in the towel.
So why does he do it because he loves what he does
    It turns him on.
    Thats my take on it.

Definitely listen to the studio version. Much better. From the Beginning, Knife Edge and Karn Evil 9 are some other good ones. The full version of Karn Evil 9 is over 29 minutes long. But there are shorter versions. I have the one played on the radio which is close to 5 minutes long. I personally find it great to listen to and much easier to digest than the full version.

    I like your review....
That recording is from 1974 that's why it's grainy .
They are an English band who refused to be blues based and instead wanted to be based off classical music and sound European instead of American.
As far as the lyrics go it sounds like someone is putting some undue expectations on the writer that he wants to climb out of but yet he still likes them . Or he could be writing about himself.

    • @thomasdurrschmidt4808
      @thomasdurrschmidt4808 Год назад +1

Also , he is chewing gum because he wants to keep his saliva flow going so his vocal cords are wet.
Ed Sharon could not hold a candle to Greg Lake .
Emerson Lake and Palmer cared more about the art than the money. The art carried them through.
