beautiful work. I watched your 1840's dress, and you were slightly upset with the wrinkling of the bodice. I think I may know why it did that. When you sew the fabric sewing in opposite directions vertically can stretch the fabric weirdly. So I think it happened when you did the boning channels, and sewed up one side, and down the other. Next time, choose one way and sew up one side, then sew up the other side starting from bottom to top both sides, make sense? Just a tip I picked up somewhere along the lines. Beautiful work btw
After watching your lace inserted blouse AGAIN, I watched this video and again I am floored at how you are such a great sewer. REALLY! Attention to detail and your neatness is amazes me. It's not my business but, I hope you out something out of these talents to work for you. I know how expensive it is to make these delicate. My sister in law is a stay at home worker and, she like you create such lady outfits. I don't know if lady is the right word. She created beautiful old time wedding gowns but she does modern to. She also tells the bride if she brings it back she will make a Christining outfit if they would like. She went to college for dental and found she likes this better. Your work is really so great. I will spend the day looking at your creations. thanks for sharing. .
These are absolutely lovely! One comment about your buttonholes. I was taught that if there is going to be any horizontal pulling on the closure, you will want horizontal buttonholes. Same rule for vertical. So I think you chose the correct buttonholes for the job! Love the project, you do wonderful work. :)
that decorative button stitch is so darling, ive never seen that kind of detail before! smart move as well to dye match your cotton to the ivory lace, ive seen too many undergarments out there made with bright bleached linen alongside tanned lace, haha! and your combinations came out absolutely fantastic, and the teal ribbon looks so lovely with your complexion!
When I was 7 my grandma decided that I had good hands for sewing and creativity so she decided to teach me how to sew and she took me to pick out my first pincushion. Turned out to be the last one I even needed. It's pink and magnetic and very helpful. Don't ask my why, but when my grandma was making things you knew to use the pincushion to pick up pins from the floor before walking in the room with bare feet. The pins would get everywhere. She was an amazing seamstress, but she could NOT keep track of her pins lol. Never could. My mom apparently stepped on many as a child. Hence my grandma's advice about getting a magnetic pincushion. She loved it. I will treasure that thing forever. 😊 and she was right. I turned out quite crafty. I miss her ❤ thank you for the reminder. Just saw the end... she had button jars too lol, along with other things like all her yarn, I inherited them. The final product is beautiful. And they look so airy and comfortable!

I really love "heirloom sewing" - which this definitely qualifies for. Did you know that there a scissors especially made for cutting behind the lace and trimming behind/next to lace? They have a blunt tip on the bottom blade and sharp tip on the top - but you can also find them with both tips blunt. It's really hard to poke the scissors through your lace and cut it by mistake which speeds things up a lot. (Well, for me anyway. When I trim behind lace I dread cutting a slash in the lace so always take it extra-slow and careful.) There are straight ones which are good for things like cutting the fabric down the middle when you've inserted lace. For when you do a lot of trimming behind/alongside lace there are "crank-handled" ones that help you just a bit more too. I'm not sure what brands you have where you are but I highly recommend treating yourself to some if you find them given the amount of this kind of sewing you do! If you can't find them then high quality "safety scissors" are also handy in a pinch. p.s. Subscribed - I'm really enjoying your channel!

I put my needle parallel to the seem while she holds it in a 90° angle to the seem. Also I tend to hold the fabric up in the air, while she puts it on a surface. Super interesting to see!

Beautiful garment. Yes it takes time to do all that lace insertion but it is well worth it. I love the decorated stitch for sewing on the buttons. I've seen where it was done in a thread color to match the trims. Not sure if that would be historically correct though. Thank you for sharing.
I wonder if adding a green tea or mint tea would have reduced the slight pink tone and brought out a more yellow tone closer to the cream. I mean it looked good, I love tea dying. Just thinking.

These turned out so lovely the lace inserts are so pretty. I am thinking about making a pair of combinations for myself do you have any recommendations for the aprox yardage of fabric I should buy
For me, the top portion of the combinations barely took up any fabric. The major bit was consumed by the drawer portion, as they are very full. I was able to do mine for under 2 meters I think. Once you've got the drawers pattern sorted, it should be pretty easy to estimate yardage! :)

I draped the top and for the drawers I used a book, The Voice of Fashion by Frances Grimble. I think the weight of the cotton was fine in the end, I just wanted to make it less optic white to match the lace I had a little better :)

Ah, you set the tea dye with vinegar. Interesting. I wondered how you were going to do that, what setting agent you would use, if any. A very nice set.

In this video and your Gibson Girl video, you used the same technique to permanently sew on your lace using the zigzag and then cut your excess fabric. It has now been almost 2 years. Where did you find that wide lace?! I haven't been Abe to find anything wider than 2 inches, when 4 inches would be preferable. Did you get it online by any chance?
I understand the struggle for wide lace! Do you mean the one for the waist or for the leg flounces? The waist was a scrap of lace in a big lace bundle, so it was a very lucky find. The flounce one was bought on Etsy, which has hoards of lace so I would recommend checking there!

They're basically the same as bandage scissors that a nurse would use. If you can't find ones in sewing stores, maybe look in medical supply stores.

That's the way my mother used to do it. She died last year at 102 and learned sewing from her grandmother who was contemporary with the civil war.

I didn't! I just ironed it and that helped it stay in place while I sewed :)
