Even though this video is 5 years old, it's still relevant and I want to make a fur blanket for this winter. Thanks so much! I love your channel and your videos!
This is the best sewing tutorial I have seen for any fabric/project. I appreciate you taking your time with the instructions and giving visual tips vs rushing through or talking too fast (or that terrible thing most people do when they speed up the playback, causing viewers to rewind and replay multiple times to see the process accurately). Additionally, while you were thorough with the instructions, you didn't drag out the tutorial with unnecessary commentary. This is pure teaching! I have not sewn with faux fur and would not have thought about directionality. I am now confident I can sew a beautiful piece. Thank you!
You never cease to amaze me with your insightful tips on your tutorials. I've been stashing these gorgeous Cuddles not knowing how to proceed without messing them up. Today I am bringing them out to stitch up for gifts. Thank you Sew Very much!
Thank you Laura. I found a wonderful faux fur in my local craft shop, but didn't know how to sew it. Thanks to your tutorial, I feel I can make a throw for my daughter. Cheers from Australia...
meandlulabelle 30 some years ago and my children are very small I made stuffed animals with faux fur. I wish I had known about the brush technique then. I used a straight PIN to bring the fur out of the seams.
Please tell me you are/were a school teacher! Wow! So good at teaching... thank you so much. I know how to sew but you had some tips that I didn't know about! Going to make a blanket for my son for his birthday! Thank you! 💖💖💖
Thanks for this wonderful tutorial! I just purchased two faux fur throws and was going to cut them in two to make 4 pillows for my couch! Now I know how to cut and sew them correctly!
OMG Laura this looks very... cuddly, warm and I already visualize me watching a movie in my couch, with a hot cocoa in my hand!! it's in my to do list!! thanks for the tips!!
Oooh I just love that fur blanket you made, I didn’t know how to sow something like that. If I find some of that fur in the shop I definitely going to buy some of it and make a duvet for my bed ......nice , I do like that Fox radish fur, very nice colors. So nice so nice 🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️
You just answered all but one of my questions about sewing with furry fabric. That question is this : I've researched a little and seen how some people say you need a special machine to sew furry and/or fuzzy fabric with. Is that so ? Or can it be sewn with a regular sewing machine ? If you do need a special machine, what is it called ? Or is it just that you need a certain foot such as the walker foot you mentioned in your video here ? I appreciate your help and advice on this. 😍❣😻
I purchased something called faux fur feather just because it's beautiful. Having no idea what to do with it but it was too pretty to pass by. Thanks for you help. Now I know I'm going to make a faux fur throw.
Thanks for another wonderful video! My granddaughter wanted a faux deer hide blanket for her daughter (my great granddaughter! 😊) so I ordered the fabric from Shannon, and it is gorgeous! I wasn't really sure about stitching this up, I'm so glad I held off, your video answered my questions. Now, however she thinks she wants minky on one side and fur on the other. I know minky also has a nap, so would I basically stitch the blanket the same way as if it was fur on both sides? Any other helpful tips?
Another great video! Thank you. The exacto knife is a good idea. However, when I bought my faux fur, the clerk at the cutting counter actually ripped my piece along the grain line. It always gives me little shock when they do that!
My goodness, thank you! I have searched everywhere trying to fix a problem. Every time I sew with fur I have a seem line. I never would have thought of brushing it.
Thank you! This is by far the best video I have ever seen on sewing with faux fur. I have a request. Would you please show us how to square up minky or cuddle fabric? Since you cannot use the selvage on this type of fabric, what would you suggest? Thank you again! Love that you share you knowledge.
Hi Laura! Thanks for sharing your expertise with us, it's precious! I want to make one. I saw your tutorial about prewashing fabrics so I'm tempted to ask you if you prewashed the faux fur as well. Have a great day! 😎🌸
Would you be willing to make another one, but more quilt/comforter like? I’m trying to learn how to make two for my bed.. but am not sure what to use for the filler in the middle. To make it more cozy. Or how to get it to where the filler stays? And doesn’t bunch up in the wash? I’m picky. And can’t find any bedding I like. So I’m stuck making my own lol. And could you fill me in on what kind of sewing machine you recommend? I haven’t bought one yet. I want to make sure I even know what I’m doing first before spending all that money. And I’m trying to figure out which sewing machine I should go with. The brother se400 computerized sewing and embroidery machine has crossed my mind. But can a wandering foot even fit one of those? I’m not sure how sewing machines work 100% yet? I have so many questions lol, I’m sorry☺️lol
If you use heavy faux fur You could just put on hem all the way around and let it sit on top. AS for a machine, please go test drive a few different ones and buy the best that you can. I find going to a sewing machine repair shop is very helpful, as He will often have machine for sale
Thank you so much for making this video! I am new to sewing, and even though I am new, I (eventually) want to make items with faux fur. What sewing machine are you using?
Couple questions: I'm using a black Luxe cuddle; what's the best way to mark it? Chalk pencils drag too much, and I end up with wiggly lines. Also: I'd really appreciate any advice you can give me regarding backing a Luxe cuddle blanket with flannel-back satin. I know you're supposed to stitch with the woven fabric on top; how does that work on the second long side, when you're trying to still stitch with the grain of the fur, but all the fabric is clumped up in the harp of the machine, to the right of the needle?
try marking the back with a Child's washable marker. I will hand base my seams. Also, try a walking foot with the woven on the bottom. you can try to cover the troubled fabric with a thin strip of interfacing to stabilize it. one more thing is to use bigger stitches
@@SewVeryEasy Thank you so much for the advice! I am going to try using a silver Sharpie, and if I can find a light-colored washable marker, I'll try that too - and see what works best! I'm already using a walking foot, and 2 rows of pins (1 on each side of, and running parallel to, the seam line.) And I have lengthened the stitches, and lowered the pressure on the presser foot as well. Stabilizer sounds like a great idea! I have some real thin newsprint from a child's drawing pad.... If that works, I'll let you know!
Is it okay to pre-wash this fabric, or should you sew the blanket up first? I ordered a minky and a faux fur from Shannon fabrics. I plan to make a throw as a gift and wanted to launder the fabrics first.
Hi ... I have boughten a piece of fur like this ... but now what type / weight of polyester fabric do I use for the other side. I didn't buy enough to do both sides of the wool duvet I would like to put this over.
very nice Laura, i have problems with the niylon or polyester fabric it doesn't go through my machine the stich jumps and became bigger and some times small , i tried to but narrow reborn under Neth to make work , if there is a way you can show me i will be thankful. thanks again.
a walking foot and a stretch needle really does help, but also be sure to have at least a 1/2" seam, and try not to push or pull the fabric, let the machine do all the work. It might feel like we need to help the machine because it looks think, but it is not as thick as it looks and the machine can do it. Hope this helps:)
Thanks for answer my question, very good information, actually Laura i a used machine when came to Canada it has nothing only regular foot i don't have even the back stitches ,that's why i suffer when i saw. Thank you again Laura
Oh I know what you mean, I had a machine that only sewed forward for years. You can still try all the above ideas and sometimes you can still get a walking foot for the older machines:)
I went to the website to purchase this red fox fabric but they require a tax ID number to prove resale abilities. However, I am just a regular woman that wants to make a throw/bed top. How were you able to purchase yours?
I wishes I've found your video before I pulled the "fur" and...my hair out! At $30.00 a meter... :-) Thank you for a very informative tutorial. I will dig out my unfortunate blanket-to-be, and sew it properly as you have showed.
Hi Laura and thanks. I had tried the Where to Buy but it doesn't accept my 6-digit Quebec area code. Fortunately, I found Fabric.com on their list and they do sell to particulars and also ship to Canada. I'm also happy that we can pay with Paypal. Have a great day! Thanks to one of your tutorials, I had discovered great fabrics featuring cartoons. I bought 2 yards of The Dysfunctional Family and will watch one of your tutorials for making a cushion. 😎😎
Love this video. I tested for a vegan fur company that is starting up, and I know their furs were better than any real fur, love them! To bad you can't find their crazy kids colors anywhere to do a DIY. Furmanity.com
Melody LeBeau There is nothing “vegan” about fake fur. Petrochemicals are the building blocks of synthetic fabrics...extracted in the form of crude oil. I very much doubt that the thousands of animals killed and numerous ecosystems that were lost forever due to oil spills allows fake fur to ever be considered “vegan” or sustainable. Just saying ☝🏼

You have lots of time before your cold weather hits:)
As we are getting 40degC days now, I can't wait!!!!!!
Lady, you a great teacher! Please do more videos :)
Great tips for sewing with fur! These would make fabulous gifts! Oh and I like the idea of brushing the fur....I never would have thought of that!
meandlulabelle 30 some years ago and my children are very small I made stuffed animals with faux fur. I wish I had known about the brush technique then. I used a straight PIN to bring the fur out of the seams.

OMG Laura this looks very... cuddly, warm and I already visualize me watching a movie in my couch, with a hot cocoa in my hand!! it's in my to do list!! thanks for the tips!!

Oh that looks so warm and cuddly.... Okay maybe not for me at this time of year but next winter, yes!

This would be a great project for anyone just starting to use furs, like myself lol. Great tutorial, defiantly going to make this!
Luv this fabric, makes me imagine I'm in cozy log cabin.

Thanks ever so much the tip on how to cut this fabric is priceless!!
glad you liked it and thanks for watching
It's beautiful. Here in the desert I think we might need it one or two days a year, but it would look lovely against the back of the couch
Hi Jennie, even in warmer weather, this throw would be so soft and cozy...and there are always the cooler nights and air conditioning too ;)
true! but just the feel and look is amazing
Extremely helpful!! Thanks!
Nice tutorial, thank you!
Love this. I have only worked with small amts of fur but I can see now I can do more. Thank you.
It is fun, I hope you give it a try:)
Fantastic, concise and helpful. Thank you!
Fabulous video, thank you for providing such great info!

Rosalind Hamilton i
Love the fur. Thxs for sharing.
thanks and thanks for watching
who knew id find someone to tell me the answer to my 5 minute questions, in a non-annoying, actually educational way.
Beautiful work!
Can you use any sewing machine to do this? Or do you need a particular type?
This is so cool! Thanks Laura! 😎
thanks for watching:)
Sadly Shannon fabrics only sells wholesale. Ugh. Love your videos & wish I had access to the fantastic fabrics you use.
Please check with your local quilt shop and fabric shop a lot of shops do carry this line or they can get it for you :)

You can wash after. I have tested it and it is fine:)
Love it!
thanks:)
very nice
thanks:)
Very beautiful, which fabric did you use for the backing?
The same as on the front.
ShannonFabrics, thank you.
both the back and front are the same:) This sure makes it easy! thanks for asking
SewVeryEasy, Thank you 😊
Lovely
thanks:)

perhaps a heavy flannel. I think it would have a nice weight to it

I wishes I've found your video before I pulled the "fur" and...my hair out!
At $30.00 a meter... :-)
Thank you for a very informative tutorial. I will dig out my unfortunate blanket-to-be, and sew it properly as you have showed.
Hold tight because you are going to like todays video...another fur helper:)
Why do u have to hand stitch the opening ???
I just like the look of it
Does this work with real fur?
Yes, all furs need the fibers pulled into the inside, so that we do not see the seams
Hi again, where can we buy this faux fur? Shannon, from what I understand, sells only to business people.
If you go to their site there is a "were to buy" link. Put in your zip and it will help you find a store:)

Oh that is great to know:) thanks for letting me know!
I looked on the Shannon website, and it seems these faux furs are dry clean only.
June Fish it is under the Cuddle fabric, not the fur. hope this helps
Thank you, I see it! Now if I can just find it retail -- that red fox you used would be perfect for throw on our family room sofa!
Found it on fabric.com -- woo hoo!
How does 5 yards cover a queen
it just covers the top
