Ewan McGregor's performance in this is so good. And Nicole Kidman as well but specifically the breath work in th line delivery for "thank you for curing my ridiculous obsession with love" and then that cry at the end? He sounds like his soul has been wrenched from his body
When I first saw this movie in theaters I thought it was crazy. So crazy I had to see it again... 13 times in theaters. Countless through the years. Probably my favorite movie. Your flatmate has great taste! And yes, that was Ewen and Nicole actually singing!
I love this movie! I remember when it first came out and I went to see it with friends, we hadn't seen a trailer and all the promo sheet said was "A story about truth, beauty, freedom and love". We didn't even realise it was a musical. When it opened with the bars from The Sound of Music, I was already in love. We went back to see it again the next day, and a few days later I took my mum to see it - she loved it too. Still so many emotions tied up in this movie! Glad you enjoyed it. I'd love Baz Luhrmann to make another musical like this, his red curtain trilogy (Strictly Ballroom, ROMEO+JULIET and Moulin Rouge!) were all so so good.
Hey! I just rewatched this the other day. Great choice. One of my favorites. The music is great. The visuals are great. Acting's a little over the top but it's a musical, and a weird one at that. FUN FACT: the necklace she gets from the Duke is not a costume piece. Those are real diamonds. It was the single most expensive piece of jewelry ever made specifically for a film. I can't remember exactly how much it's worth, but....yeah. They did that.
Yes via IMDB: The necklace worn by Nicole Kidman was made of real diamonds and platinum and was the most expensive piece of jewelry ever specifically made for a film. The Stefano Canturi necklace was made with 1,308 diamonds, weighing a total of 134 carats and was worth an estimated U.S. $1 million.
I didn't see this movie until after it was on DVD but it is so crazy and wonderful I watched it every day that summer. And now I watch it every valentine's day one of my all time favorites
Some interesting trivia about the movie on IMDb: "Come What May" was written by David Baerwald for Romeo + Juliet (1996) but not used. In Moulin Rouge! (2001), it is newly written for the stage show by Christian. It is the only completely original song in the entire film. However, because it was written for another film, it was disqualified for the Oscars' Best Song award. Moulin Rouge! (2001) became the first movie musical in ten years to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture since Disney's Beauty and the Beast (1991). It was also snubbed for Best Director (Baz Luhrmann) and Best Original Screenplay, which has been cited as one of the most outrageous Oscar snubs of The 74th Annual Academy Awards (2002). Cat Stevens would not license his song "Father and Son," which was the first musical number in the original script, because of his current religious beliefs. He objected to the sexual content in the film. The scene featuring "Father and Son" was to have been between Christian and his father in his father's office, with all his father's employees joining in for the chorus. This was to be the segue into his leaving home for Paris. The scene is included in the complete script on the Special Edition DVD. In original drafts of the script, Satine had a three-year-old child and the story was told in flashbacks, told by Christian to the child. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Heath Ledger were contenders to play Satine and Christian. Other possible Christians included Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ronan Keating. Other possible Satines included Kate Winslet, Hilary Swank, Renée Zellweger, Drew Barrymore, Natalie Mendoza, Sharleen Spiteri, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Tim Wheeler, of the rock band Ash, auditioned for the lead role of Christian, which led him to write the track "Orpheus." Courtney Love auditioned for Satine, and allowed Baz Luhrmann to use Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the opening sequence, a rare case of allowing her late husband Kurt Cobain's work to be used in film or TV. Baz Luhrmann hired Marilyn Manson to sing "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which made Courtney Love very angry as she and Manson had a longstanding feud. She evoked the performer approval clause in her contract, forcing production to find an unknown band to re-record the song six days before the movie's opening. Courtney Love has gone on record calling losing the role of Satine to Nicole Kidman one of the biggest disappoints of her career and made no secret of her resentment against Kidman. Director Baz Luhrmann characterized the difference between the two actresses in a Vanity Fair article by saying "Courtney is fire and Nicole is ice." This prompted Love to remark that Kidman was "a puddle" and dedicate the song "Miss World" (a song about a self-loathing beauty queen) to Kidman on her 1999 tour with her band Hole. Heath Ledger lost the lead role when it was determined he was too young to be a romantic interest for Nicole Kidman. He was so angry at Baz Luhrmann that years later he refused to work with him in Australia (2008). www.imdb.com/title/tt0203009/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv
Omg, so much drama 😅 But in the end, I'm really happy the director went with Ewan and Nicole, they have great chemistry and a vulnerability that suits the story so well!
Just found your channel through this reaction. I enjoyed it immensely. My bf who isn't too much into musicals introduced me to this movie and I have to say it's definitely one of my favorites. :) I tried clicking the link for the Big Musical Quiz but it says the video is private. :( I saw your watching DW is this a re-watch or a first time viewing? Either way I'm going to watch haha.
The "Roxanne" dance/song is the best thing in this movie!
