For some reason my first round when I made my circle it didn't come up as a "Shape Layer". So when trying to Combine Shapes with the cutout that option was greyed out on me. Took a little head scratching but got it all to work. cheers
How do you slice out if the layers aren't shape layers? I have 2 PNG layers and need the shape from 1 cut out from the other layer but bc they're not shape layers I can't use the combine shape drop down bar
The object you want to cut out cmd or control click on the layer icon to make a selection of that shape. Select the other layer. Access the marquee tool, right click on canvas and select layer via cut. The selected shape should be cut out from your layer. Hope that helps!

Does all text have to be rasterized to do anything like this? I assume it can't work (text) with the shape tools (combine shapes, etc)?
yeah you would need to rasterize text. The combine shapes does not work with a text layer. They only work with two shape layers.
