How has NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) expanded over the years?
Enlargement of NATO is called the Article 10 process. ‘Any other European state’ may be invited, and requires approval of all current members.
At the end of the Cold War, NATO consisted of the United States, Canada, Portugal, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Italy, Greece and Turkey.
In securing Soviet agreement for a unified Germany’s membership, NATO promised that no foreign troops or nuclear weapons would be stationed in the former East Germany. Whether further eastward expansion of NATO was agreed, however, remains a point of controversy.
Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic joined in 1999. Membership was offered to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria in 2004, and Albania and Croatia in 2009.
More recent entrants to NATO include Montenegro in 2017 and North Macedonia in 2020.
As of today, three countries have applied: Finland, Sweden, and Ukraine: all after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February (2022).
Ratification of the former two, (as at November 2022), remains at 28 out of 30 current members, with holdouts Hungary and Turkey.

The United States government promised "no inch east" as a prerequisite for allowing a unified Germany to be part of NATO. The United States reneged on that, and unilaterally abrogated the ABM, Open Skies, and START treaties.
Then the United States supported a right wing coup in Ukraine in 2014, and armed and trained Ukraine military forces.
In 2022, two NATO members, Norway and the United States, blew up a portion of the Russian/German Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which is an act of war and considered terrorism by international law.

@@k0rf3on6 The "No inch east" assurance and understanding are public record.
The United States unilaterally abrogating the ABM, Open Skies, and START treaty framework are open record.
The United States supporting the right wing coup in Ukraine in 2104 are backed by released phone calls from Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, interviews with Ukraine Right Sector activists, and from information obtained from Hunter Biden's laptop amongst other data.
United States President Donald Trump was impeached in 2019 for instructing the state department and justice department to inquire about Hunter Biden's and Joe Biden's potentially illegal activities in Ukraine. Part of the articles of impeachment included, "President Trump withheld a White House meeting desperately sought by the Ukrainian President, and critical U.S. military assistance to fight Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine." That was $400 million in military, USAID, and other contracts that Trump halted to get answers on potential illegal activities by a former sitting Vice President and his family. At that time, the United States had been arming and training Ukraine's military and right wing militias in Ukraine - even though the State department had previously listed some of those groups as terrorist organizations.
Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Seymour Hersh provided a detailed analysis of the United States and Norway involvement in blowing up the Nordstream 2 pipelines. Both United States President Joe Biden and Victoria Nuland, now Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, had threatened to "end" the pipeline earlier and boasted afterward.
Also, Denmark and Sweden had investigated the cause of the pipeline explosion, and neither released the information citing security and political concerns. Denmark is a NATO member state, and Sweden has applied to be a NATO member. If It was Russia, they would have released the information immediately.

@@boredweeb867 Russia used the same international law NATO used to intervene in Yugoslavia and Kosovo. The blockade of Cuba by President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis used the same principles of international law without the backing of the United Nations. If rules of law are only in effect for the NATO and the United States to act, and no one else, what kind of rules based law do we have?
The United States used that same international law to invade Iraq on made up WMD, yellow cake uranium, and al Qaeda link charges they knew to be false. Under those circumstances, that is a violation of international law. Note here that Germans and Japanese were hanged after World War II for doing what the United States had done in Iraq ... an invasion that inflicting nearly 1 million Iraqi casualties.
The conflict in Ukraine has always been about natural gas, oil, weapon sales, and U.S. power in Europe. The United States Obama/Biden Administration supported the Ukraine coup in 2014, and then changed U.S. law to allow U.S. exports of natural gas and oil products just months later in 2105.
Attacking the Nordstream 2 was a political act of terrorism and an act of war on both Russia and Germany committed by the United States and Norway. Almost immediately afterward, Norway opened its own natural gas pipeline to mainland Europe.

Moreover, the new Russian Republic/Oligarchy should allow full democratic processes in and outside of politics.
Alas, Russia did NOT want to accomplish the criteria back in 2001 for “some” reasons. Ukraine will also be needing to change their constitution just like other European states hence, I rest my case.

@Wolfgang Hachmuth yes I know. That may have been a missed opportunity, although I consider Germany's NATO membership to be beneficial - not because I like the USA, I don't, but because being a member of the most powerful military alliance the world has ever known is certainly very good for national security. We don't know how history might have played out, it could have been better or worse. I'm Austrian, and we really like our neutral status, but we cannot know if it would have benefitted Germany.
Regardless, that didn't happen. It's more than understandable that after the Cold War, Germany wanted its territory to be secure. Just like Poland and the Baltics.

NATO's eastward expansion is controversial because it was never signed in a legally-binding treaty. However, Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of NATO alleges that NATO never promised not to expand, which is blatantly false.
Minutes of the meeting between Gorbachev, then-president of the USSR and NATO leaders George HW Bush, then-president of the US, Helmut Kohl and Hans-Dietrich Genscher, chancellor and foreign minister of west Germany respectively are available on national archives and clearly shows said NATO leaders giving assurances to Gorbachev that NATO will "not expand a single inch eastwards", after the latter unilaterally offered to withdraw Soviet troops from central and Eastern Europe.

It's not a point of controversy there is numerous speeches documents referring to the promise not to move eastward and there is no reason to move eastward unless you're planning to attack Russia. We also know from history in the world that you never let 2 major powers touch each other you only will survive if you have buffer States in the middle and sadly Americans are so poor on history they miss that. They're gonna repeat the same mistakes that have happened hundreds of years ago in the past.

Your points don't make any sense, there are multiple "major powers" historically that have shared a common border, the US and British Empire is an example of this, and same With Russia / the USSR and China . NATO is a defensive alliance, so there is zero reason for Russia to be afraid of sharing a border with the NATO bloc unless Russia wants to do yet another unjustified land grab like what has been going on in Ukraine the past year.

@@LuKing2 say whaaat? defensive alliance?? don't make me laugh... usa and nato since ww2 ended invaded so many countries cus they felt like it and killed so many innocent people as well. how is that a defencive alliance? usa did so much shit since ww2 ended and now expanding rapidly towards Russia's border even tho there was an agreement they wouldn't do it. So why would you come all the way to Ukraine and even have your troops there literaly on the Russia's border facing towards Russia?? Even before this war... Russia was warning them so many times to stay away or they will have to use force and they did it on purpose because they knew Russia would do something. That was the trigger of this war that is happening rn cus usa cant live without making conflicts all over the world and then acting like they are saviors or peace makers
