Should You Buy a Tenere 700 Over the MT-07?

  • Quick answer: maybe. If you want to have that iconic punchy fun engine to take up a mountain and then have the ability to do trails at the top, absolutely. If you prefer staying on pavement and maybe you don't have legs for days, hmm...
    I had many opportunities to buy an MT-07. In this video, I talk about why I chose the Tenere 700 instead and what you're really paying for if you choose to upgrade.

    So you have time on both on road.. which is more fun? If you did road/street only (no off-road) would you still go with the T7 or opt for the MT-07 or MT-09?

    • @Hegworld
      @Hegworld  3 года назад +10

      Depends on your on-road riding style at that point. Personally, if I opted out of dirt entirely, between the mt-07 and mt-09, I'd go with the 7, but would complain about how small it is until I fix that. I'm 6'1" so stock, the 7 feels like a toy to me. The 9 is taller, but I don't like the ergo's. After riding one, I felt like it was a supermoto sitting on the bike instead of in it, and corners weren't as confidence inspiring as, say, my old Z900. Now for riding style, I don't like going fast in a straight line, but I'm a slut for corners, love torque, and don't mind a softer suspension. Again, the 7 beats the 9 for me there. I like the power of the 9, and it takes a bit more maturity to ride well, but the 7 feels much better in corners and in town to me personally.
      Edit: now between the tenere and the mt-07, if I had my druthers, I'd pick the tenere. for size, luggage capability, forgiveness in a drop because nobody is immune to that, and finally it handles better in low speed, lock to lock maneuverability. It also feels just as good in corners from what I've experienced

    I test rode the MT07 then the T7 , the MT07 was a great wee bike, I would recommend it to anybody.
    But the mighty T7 , man, what a brilliant bike. It is a genuine go anywhere bike. I'm 6ft, and with the yamaha lower front seat can flatfoot no prob. (around the same weight as you). The lower seat is plenty comfortable, and that way there is no loss of ground clearance if you go offroad and it gets a bit gnarly. Stock tyres are great on the road, and dry dirt, but theres mostly mud and wet grass here, and they are terrible on that, hilariously zero lateral grip.
    Best bike I've owned in 40 years riding.

    I'm 5.10 and ride an XT660Z which might even be taller and can only get tip of 1 foot down on one side, but I don't roll backwards at petrol stations. Bike control is a crucial aspect to learn, while riding and moving it around in parking lots, etc.

    I think camel makes a hinged gas cap for the T7. Got lucky and found 22' Tenere 700 on Craigslist with less than 1000 mi. Off road l went overfourPeaks. Quite smooth for a dirt bike, power is very usable. I've only had it out 3 times, too hot in Phoenix now (July). Typical Yamaha, great bike so far

    If you are more street oriented, and you go on gravel roads or mild offroad every once in a while, the better solution would be the XSR700 XTribute. Especially with the high mounted exhaust and the suspension upgrades you're in the same price range as the Ténéré.

      @@Anders57292 Ah, I wondered, as I had to get rid of my Tracer 900 because I found it impossible to ride slowly, the engine demanded more all the time (which is fantastic, but not healthy for your license)
      I now ride the Tenere 700, which is also an MT-07 engine, which can still do hilariously fun speeds on the road as and when , but is also happy chugging along at 15mph in 2nd or 3rd while I admire the scenery, or hit a forest trail , or just take a single track road and chill out listening to music on the cardo.
      The test ride I had on the Mt-07 Tracer I loved it, absolutely loved how small and light and flickable and nimble and quick and eager it felt, but I would still have ended up with license 'issues' :)

    I'm worried I will want more power, but this bike seems perfect because I'm 6'2"(235-245), am going to mostly ride 80-85mph on the 20 mile ride to work. The roads around me in Sacramento aren't great, so I think the tenere will feel much more comfortable. I'm not a wheelie guy, and love riding off road. There's lots of places close to me that I can hit up a nice fire road or easy single track.
    It will allow me to ride offroad with my dad(he rides a ktm exc) and go on adventure trips or solo camping. The tenere is up higher as well, so I will like that for visibility to other drivers and being able to see better on the road.
    I heard that the sound on the Tenere 700 is really similar to the mt-07 with the same exhausts. is this true? I wonder if that extra weight on the Tenere makes it feel better on the highway? In terms of the wind or being "blown around."

    supposedly the mt-07 is a full second faster in a 0 - 60.
    Is this noticeable?

    • @Hegworld
      @Hegworld  3 года назад

      If you A/B compare them one after the other going all out in safe conditions, sure. But in my experience, taking a comparison like 5 seconds vs 4 seconds in a situation where your attention should be on everything else around you is like comparing something with a top speed of 150mph vs 186mph. The bottom line still ends up, how often are you going to push that hard?
      I borrowed the MT and let my buddy borrow my T7 and we have the same riding experience and style. Taking both bikes out neither of us felt inadequate; and leaving EVERY light or turn we accelerated the same and shifted at identical points every time. We don't road race so that supposed second lead I should have had on the MT, I never felt.
