- Teardown of the Toshiba Portege Z830 (European name) / Z835 (US version with glossy screen) ultrabook. To reach the servicable parts (memory, SSD, WLAN card) you need a Torx T6 (middle screw) and a small crosstip screwdriver. Therefore, you can see here how to upgrade the memory / SSD / wireless card of the laptop. Remind that you may loose your warranty when damaging parts during the upgrade.
I answer myself ... I have bought a Kingstone 8Gb and I installed it ... the result ... 10 GB of RAM !!! (linux 14.04) Great!!
I've just disassembled one, the center bit is not a T6, it is in fact a T7. T6 will fit but T7 is the correct size.
*****, you can also use a very small flathead and pin it between two of the five nicks and unscrew it. Most small screwdriver sets will have one that's up to the task.
@jnbarnesuk yes thats right in the Z830-10N there was one 4GB stick and 2GB soldered on the mainboard

You can actually use a TX-7 screwdriver for this, and I'd recommend it. The TX-6 felt way too loose, and the TX-7 fit perfectly.
After upgrade RAM on Z835, speaker no sound, might be the speaker cable detached when opening the back, where is the location of speaker cable?
What type of tool is needed to remove the center tool?
I don't have the screwdriver to open the screw in the center. Is there any way out I can open it ?

I can attest to this. The chassis has a Torx T6 screw *with* a security bit which means that a conventional Torx T6 screwdriver will *not* work. Either you buy one with a hole to match the security bit (which are hard to find), or you need to use a 1-2mm scewdriver or another metal object you can use to exert force with on a small surface area to get rid of this security bit. It may take you 15 min and a few drops of sweat running down your forehead, but it can be done.
Slighly different on Z30-A-106 - the central screw is phillips and thre are sscrews hidden under the rubber feet near the hinge but not the feet at the front. Dpn't forget the screws either side of the docking port, which are recessed but still hold the back on.

ok, using the T7 screwdriver I applied firm pressure (from a couple of angles) to the center lug until it snapped off and I could then unscrew it normally.

On mine screwdriver set ("Titan 12710 Tamper Proof Star Key Set" on Amazon) it is a TX7 not TX6. Toshiba Portege z835

The middle screw is a Tamper Resistant (or security) torx screw not a standard T6 on my machine, search for Torx TR6
Turns out it was a tamper resistant T7, dno where they've got T6 from.
Also it's a mSATA SSD, don't make the same mistake as me and order a normal SATA SSD

Is there just one memory expansion slot? From what I understood from the teardown there is 2gb hard wired RAM plus the slot?

What's the physical size of the SSD in these things. I'm thinking about swapping my 128 (realistically holds 104 but the OS and other system files before I installed all my programs took it to 82) out for a 256.

If I have overall 4GB RAM memory and I would like to upgrade to 6GB. Should I buy 4GB and exchange it with those 2GB removable on laptop? Or is it possible simply add extra 2 Gb? Thanks. :)

no it's not possible to change the processor in Ultrabook and neither in most notebooks. The CPU is welded to the mainboard to enable the thin Ultrabook silhouette. You can change memory, batteries and HDD in most notebooks.

anyone have tutorial for the led replacement? It seems laptops/ultrabooks nowadays stray away from being able to just pop the bezel off and replacing the screen that way. A tutorial will be much appreciated.
You need a security bit they are listed as Torx but specifically Torx T6H

I think I have the same center screw as Eric, it has a raised bit in the middle that means the TorqX screwdriver cant sit in the socket :( I'm assuming that a specialist screwdriver will have a hollow center that can deal with this bs...in the meantime my user will have to wait for it to arrive so we can fit his new keyboard, sigh.
My computer wobbled from delivery and the screen cracked on the right from a factory defect. There was no physical damage to the computer.

Just updated my SDD (to 500GB) and RAM (to 10GB) on a Portege Z935-P300. Video was helpful. Now I am looking to improve my Performance Rating by doing something with the Graphics (bottleneck at 5.9). Any ideas?

Yes you can replace it. I bought my battery and just replaced it today.
