I made one exactly like this way back in the 80s in school, and got a trophy for it, gave it to my mother, and it's still being used to this day, no cracks, or damage. This will stand the test of time, that's for sure.
@@cv6442 Either Minwax or Varathane pre-stains are fine. Make sure you use a water based pre-stain for water based wood stain and if you're using an oil based wood stain then, of course, use an oil based pre-stain. Also, even though the product label tells you to let the conditioner (aka pre-stain) dry for only 10 to 15 minutes and then apply the wood stain to your project within 2 hours, DON'T FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS. THEY ARE WRONG. True wood finishing experts know that you have to let the pre-stain dry completely overnight. Otherwise, when you apply the stain the conditioner will re-soften, lift up and mix with the stain you are applying. In that case it will no longer act as a barrier to the stain, which defeats the purpose of using it. By the way, if you're staining a species of wood particularly prone to blotching, you can use both a pre-stain and a gel stain over it.

Not a bad project, but the finish is patchy. You should always use wood conditioner before you stain a soft wood like pine.
Thank you
I'm just starting with woodwook, but hope to do more in the future. So thanks from me as well! 😄
Is there a specific wood conditioner you like best?
