Taemin is the king of soloists, we really had to wait for him to come back to witness real music and art. I would give an award to this song as everything... mv, vocals, dance. He is the best soloist ever. mark my words
You can give another award to this song: subversive genius. Go watch the Guilty MV explainer by Agatho and be shocked by the real depth of Taemin, like real shocked
Military makes sense. I thought, also, about the idol process. They go into training, they room with others, they're molded, etc., and they're told what to do/sing. But the real fire, the real passion lies within. Wanting to strike out, to break the mold ... the guilt that comes with going against the grain. The temptation to give in vs. the freedom of experiencing the truth. It could definitely be both. Taemin's back, y'all
Watching the MV and having it on full blast really is like having an out of body experience. Goosebumps everywhere. No one does this dark, dramatic, cinematic, concept like he does. I'm so happy he's back
the scene with the wooden floors surrounded by water, i see that as like, the aftermath of the destruction. everything is broken. you've given in to the temptation, the voices, and all that's left now is chaos and destruction.
Yeah the theme was loss of innocence; he had a little concept trailer video that is related to the story basically the ppl around him & him were taken like kidnapped and forced to this harsh environment learning to k*ll and all and throughout the video it showed him struggling to adapt to that life and having hard time in general, also there were little references to lord of flies & some biblical myth/story Anyway I’m glad you enjoyed the song
Taemin has talked about the literature that inspired this concept: Erotism: Death and Sensuality by Georges Bataille and Demian by Hermann Hesse. Love that Taemin decided to do things his own way with his own colors. I don't see anyone else doing this concept, or even the way in which he does it. Just stunning! Great reaction NEXT The Rizzness Just for your information, there is a choreography posted with dancers and choreographers on YT, so you can watch it in your free time.
Thank you so much for sharing Taemin's Guilty, so beautiful 💜 Taemin has released some thoughts about his concept, which seems somewhat related to his Criminal era. As you know, Taemin infuses his mvs with philosophy, literature, and religious symbolism. Here, he was inspired by George's Bataille's Eroticism and Demian by Hermann Hesse. I'm looking forward to his making of lectures 🤞🏻🙏🏼
The MV Trailer gives a fair bit more context to the storyline and explores that unsettling emotional space though the plot still isn't very concrete. He said that he took inspiration from Georges Bataille's book "Erotism: Death and Sensuality" and Hermann Hesse's "Demian", I also see a lot of influence from "Lord of the Flies" with the drawings on the walls, the kids breaking out of the institution and even his headdress. He's going to promote a b-side called The Rizzness (yes... really) so he might have a performance video for that!
according to Taemin & the mv director: the concept is framing the violence of loss of innocence & control not as growth but as a transfiguration. the mv director also confirmed that the inspiration behind the mv is Demian ( book ), it's one of the books that inspired the comeback & the upcoming concert ( concert will be named Metamorph). The parts with the headpiece is him becoming the god "Abraxas", some called the figure in the book as god and some as demon and overall as between light & dark so I think the mv plays on that theme as well between light & dark, he does have the theme of ppl are between light & dark and have two sides through most of his title tracks which also fits the lyrics & this song as well. the end part of the mv with the raft & water is him breaking free completely from any control or other forces I guess in a sense
You are so right, and everything you said has been expressed and captioned in the Guilty MV explainer by Agatho.. Take a look, it's very well put together and make you admire Taemin even more
I don’t know why but the video and some of the lyrics reminds me of the Kpop idol industry. These companies that groom young kids to become idols from a young age, how grueling that process is with the practices, and the lessons, everyone being contorted to become the same “idol” and have that look, the dance, etc., and it’s a temptation when you are young so you bite the apple but then you realize how much you’ve sacrificed and how much mental sanity you’ve lost. And Taemin (who is notorious within SM as being the hardest worker/trainee ever gone through the system) survived it all to have his own voice, own image, own thoughts, and stands a survivor even with all the loves and losses he suffered. Just my take on the video.
don't usually watch kpop reactions for insight but this was actually a great video. you noticed things i didn't and seem to have a genuine appreciation and interest in the lyricism, concept, direction etc. will definitely check out more shinee (+ solo) reactions!!
I don't think it's super far fetched to interpret this as being about some form of abuse. I saw someone saying that it seems like he is singing the part of the abuser but dancing the part of the abused. Obviously we will never know what the thought process was behind the mv but that idea seems very fitting to me. He's singing about 'let me play with you however I want so it'll be more fun', meanwhile he looks fucking tortured and HAUNTED on screen. Gorgeous, visceral song and mv.
am i the only one thinking that the video is about trainee days when he was a young boy and who he wants to become the artist that he is now. All the sacrifice and all the people in the video are the trainees that didn't make it so they are trying to reach him.
He said the basis of the song was a love he felt guilty about, so I wonder if this is about a very young love where he took advantage of his ability to attract, drunk on his power, he "played with her". Then afterwards felt overwhelmed by guilt for having tricked her, just a thought.
The music video and the song's lyrics actually have a double meaning, Taemin tries to say (or express) what the depression and anxiety caused by his time in the mandatory army caused him. He shows in gestures and in frames that he shows this and at the same time that he tries to tell us this, he camouflages this report with his hypnotic dancing skills to somehow mislead the Korean media.
The mv is mesmerizing and the vocals are absolutely INSANE 🔥 LEE TAEMIN ❤

Though I also see possible references to his service time, a lot of good ideas expressed here in the comments.
thats what I got from the M/V
