There was a Japanese TV show from the 1960's called The Samurai. It was the story of the samurai Shintaro who was a spy for the Emperor. He had a ninja sidekick called Tombai the Mist, of the Iga Ninja. Together they battled and foiled the cunning plans of the Fuma Ninja including old mate Kotaro. The TV series was only sold outside Japan to Guam (a large Japanese population) and Australia (almost ZERO Japanese population). I watched it as kid, bought the chewing gum trading cards and even made star knives in metal work.

1603 Fuma Ryu became in charge of the Sanada Clan. The Sanada clan was a samurai clan that was famous for employing guerilla tactics and "beating the odds" through unconventional thinking (senpo, ninpo, etc.). Ninja were known to have been employed at Osaka castle, and fought in the Winter and Summer Campaigns. 2-3 of the 10 famous warriors under Sanada Yukimura are recorded in legend as famous ninja.
There may or may not have ever been a specific "Sanada ryu" of ninjutsu, but the fact is, ninja lore is associated to some degree with the Sanada clan in Japanese history texts, and the clan did exist, and did spawn a number of martial ryu-ha.
The Sanada clan was a very famous, and very important clan in Sengoku period military history.

@@blu3510 Not exactly records, I'd call it a legend. Just hearing of the story seems very contrived compared to the rest of the surrounding lore. I can only speculate but it seemed more like a way to build his legend further by a group of people and/or to make the transition to doing only non-lethal duels go much smoother. "Huh? The supposed unbeatable and most famous swordsman went from doing lethal duels to non-lethal for no reason? Is he a big fake? Is he scared now?" and the doubts, rumors, and speculations would continue. They very well could have made a man into Sasaki and built up his fame with rigged duels/events/rumors...just for the benefit of another. Situations like that have been going on for a verrryy long time and will continue to.

@Lazy Veteran you realize that ninja were originally the people fighting against the samurai using nontraditional weapons. They were Farmers merchants actors ect... The were trained from am early age in stealth and info gathering. Rarely did samurai become ninja, as their tactics were considered cowardly by samurai. Konoichi were a big part of info gathering. Often times working as geisha or concubines to be close to sensitive personnel. People who would open themselves to who they thought of as just a weak woman.

Many of the clans did keep records to some degree. What really makes the ninja hard to trace is that unlike other a client groups they still exist. Ww2 Japan offically recruited clan heads and put them in charge of creating an espionage group for Japan. Which other world powers had, but Japan did not, outside the ninja tradition so they brought the ninja into the government. They did very well too!

Thank you for branching out from the biblical. I do like them. The Solomon one was particularly good. But I like all history. Romans, Aztecs, Greeks, Hinduism.... I mean whatever. History to me is fun to know. Especially since we are basically only on the cliff notes anyways. Reading the best parts. Never them waking up and having to take a shit really bad. Lol

What's really interesting is that people look like each other and you probably seen people that look just like him and you would never know it in a million years

@Demarcus Perkins Actually I don't think it was either. I'm pretty sure the Mortal K people didn't know anything about actual shinobi (or Eastern culture in general as implied by the lack of martial arts in the first few games and Raiden yelling gibberish for a special move) and just made Sub-Zero a member of Lin Kuei after the fact.

Having worked w actual modern ninja, they still use some of the oldies but goodies tricks. When you deal w executive protection, industrial and commercial security and many modern security and intelligence fields, all the old skills and abilities are used in adaptive ways. You won't see them market themselves as ninja today, too much baggage w that, too much movie and tv stuff, but 'security consultants' and related terms. While modern tech is used often, sometimes the old smoke & mirrors, fire and confusion still work, just in dif ways. The same firm may advertise under var DBAs when working w aspects of the US gov, billing becomes less traceable when the DBA rotates and noone knows who's who thru a series of DBAs, shell companies that offer 'security guards' but always have 'enough customers'. Deception, distraction, only now it's thru paper trails and the electronic equiv. When someone maybe scanning cell phones w fancy stuff, go basic w code names and etc and use CB radio, chs 35 thru 40 are rarely used, keep it to code words, keep it short and anyone who is listening by chance won't have a clue what you're saying.

I feel like some of these characters are simply ancient Japan's version of the boogie man. Just tails handed down through time to stop kids from being little turds.

Maybe or maybe its just clansmen n peasants giving fictional identities to ppl that Killed important japanese figures so it dont seem like they died to someone weaker
But i like to think its some Historical validity to these tales with how they were recorded
