Great video. I've done something similar with an antique trunk by adding 6.5" car stereo speakers and an 8" passive sub. Looks so cool. The speaker L/R outs from the class D amp go to the L/R car speakers, and the sub-out speaker wires go to the passive subwoofer driver. Way easier than monkeying around with crossovers and capacitors. The amp already has a crossover knob for the sub out and knobs to set the L/R bass and treble levels. The L/R outs from the amp carry the full range signal that these car speakers can handle. I did not include li-ion batteries, opting to go exclusively with AC power via a laptop charger (24volt 6amp) to give me nearly 150W of power. The system gets very loud and sound great. That class d amp is amazing for the price.
I also use one of these class d amps to power a pair of Dayton 2-way bookshelf speakers mounted on my office wall, and a passive sub from a thrift store on the floor. The sound is amazing for such a basic system. I use it for editing videos and doing voiceover work, or just listening to music or watching RUclips videos.
That's pretty cool - I don't have that kind of knowledge, although I suppose I could always learn. When editing videos or doing voiceover work, I usually use earbuds (wired - no delay that way), then I do a final listen with regular speakers. I'll often watch it once on my TV just to make sure the mix is about right, but since everything's different I just have to find the best middleground.

I'm in a similar situation to you in that my shop is a garage that has to serve as a place to park cars and store stuff as well. Would love to see a shop tour sometime. In particular, how you store things when you have the car in there, how you control the dust, and how you set up when you're ready to work.

Two questions. First, do you ever move your tools around? They seem kind of permanent with the hoses in place. And two what do you do for material storage?

I built mine a few years ago and still going strong. I did upgrade to the 5 battery board and did several modifications, it sounds amazing. I never got the crossovers to work right, the sound would cut out on both if I turned the volume up past a certain level. Eventually, I took them out and connected full range speakers directly to the amp. Sound just as good, if not better. I ended up putting my crossovers where two coax speakers are in case I ever needed to repair them. Eventually I yanked the whole thing out to put the full range ones in. Great video!
Thanks for the comment. That's the beauty of making kits like this - we can modify them however we want. Mine still works great, and I'm regularly blown away at how good the bass sounds when the volume is low - I've never had anything like it. Of course, the place where I use it has the perfect wall to place it against, so that helps. :)
@@TheNewbieWoodworker Yeah, the bass hits harder when you find a good spot to enhance the acoustics. It’s funny you talked a lot about the soldering of the crossover components because that’s probably why mine never worked right. It was probably something related to soldering. Never quite solved that mystery but didn’t have time to troubleshoot it either. Would like to try to fix it someday. I feel like I cheated the built by bypassing the crossovers with full range speakers.
@@MrCrippyBlunt I actually had a ton of problems doing the crosovers. I barely touched the surface in the video. In the end, it was all due to my not reading the directions clearly enough, not identifying which part was which, and my crappy soldering abilities. At one point, I stepped away from the project for a few days because I was so frustrated it wasn't working. When I came back, I unsoldered everything and started over (maybe I even did this twice, I don't remember). Fortunately I didn't ruin anything, and it worked when I was done.

Thanks. Of course, it was "Leonid & Friends", not Chicago. They're from Russia, and they do basically spot-on recreations of Chicago songs (with a few liberties here and there). And since the recordings are state of the art, they're better quality than the original Chicago versions. And the videos are awesome. (I've been a Chicago fan since CTA days, but these guys are awesome. They even played a few times with Chicago's original drummer, when they toured the US a few years back.)

I'm making my own version of this, but I am using 2 4" Dayton reference aluminum full range driver's and with titanium tweeters crossed at 3000 also the 5 battery pack. Iim also building my own cabinet out of oak because I like hardwood but it makes it heavy.

since I have made all kinds of electronic. from 5 channel light flasing box then added it to my disco 16' x 20' . this was long before LED floor. let just say my dad got mad. he was mostly mad over the holes I drilled in the 12" x 2". If any one is wondering how it drove 4 120V color xmas outdoor lights in each square, I did that with tryacxs. I had pretty insane push button setup. the hole setup was pretty insane. I got lab extra credit for it in my binary it used aa lot of what I learned in the math part of the class. If I was asked to do it again I would not do it. Like the BAL object decompile I wrote in RPG on a Sperry 9200. it did a great job for when the source desk had been lost.
You wrote a decompiler in RPG? Wow, I'm impressed! I'd ask "why would you ever do such a thing?" except I know why - it was fun, right? 😄
@@TheNewbieWoodworker I had 10 weeks of nothing to do till the COBOL class started. I have been reading the BAL manual and it explained the object were punched. the hardest part was the field names and for the most part could only be done if the object had been created with option to create the names and address. I also modify the code to work on a IBM System 3 MOD 10 and a Sperry 90/30. it could decompile any any object desk for any program to generate a BAL source desk. It was a bugger butt of a program to write. The IBM System 3 used RPGII and talk about reprograming you brain, I had to make up a list of the difference.

Love your work but adding the front speaker screens actually causes distortion in the audio. Like a small tunnel. So that messes with the response time. But it's definitely a decent build

It has been awhile since i have looked into audio components but, there was a 2 piece grill made for 8 inch speakers like the one you have for your subwoofer.
Also, did you ever think of making the crossover board and putting it in the cavity with the 4 iinch speaker?

If you're talking about installing it inside the box, there's not enough room. Otherwise, I don't know.
I enjoyed your build. You do high quality stuff, thank you. I have 1 question. Is it stereo? I can find many mono BT kits and speakers, only 1 stereo kit.
Thanks! Yes, it's definitely stereo. I built a small mono kit too (from Rocker), but I only use it occasionally for audiobooks. Parts Express has a lot of different kits, and pretty-much all of them are stereo.

How long does the battery last before recharging? Do you know the mah of those cells? thank you
I don't know the exact time. I'd say 3-4 hours, but that's a guess. The batteries are 2600mAh.
Nice build Dan, one thing you might be sorry for is gluing the back on.If you ever have to remove the electronics to fix something it's gonna be a bi**h. This coming from a retired electronics tech. BTW do you remember a company called Heath kit. Over the years before they went out of business I build just about everything they offered including the color TV.
Thanks, Larry, and I *do* remember Heath kits, although I never built one. I agree about the back, and in fact I already suffered from having done it. At one point I was going to explain it in the video, but I decided it wasn't worth the effort. What happened was I ruined the charging board, and I bought a new one, which turned out to be "v2", which didn't work with the LED charging lights I had. Which meant I had to buy a new harness and figure out how to replace the existing LEDs in the aluminum panel. What a PITA, let me tell you! I started a design in SketchUp for a box with a removable back, but I don't know if I'll ever make it or not.
Cool build. But is it honestly worth the time and frustration to build vs buy? Ignoring the pleasure of I did it my self and the fun of the build, if you know what I'm getting at. Thanks alot for the video.
Thanks. And that's a great question. I'm glad I built it, and I enjoy using something I built. I know it was just assembling a kit, but I made enough changes to feel like it's something I built, anyway. If I was sure I could buy something that sounds this good, I might have bought it. Who knows. 😄
Building it is probably better bc you can always upgrade cross over components. Alot of speakers that people consider high end like JBL or Polk or Klipsch. Tend to use really cheesy cross over components. And you end up spending more for Less. So yes building your own speaker is super beneficial

Yes you can, although I don't remember the details. But this is plenty loud the way it is.

I took apart an old stand cabinet on the side of the road and I took all the wood and are making tower speakers but I used everything even the doors I rotated the small pieces of the door into trim and made them look like collums it's pretty cool. I was going to use the piece but I had no room for it so I came up with a speaker project but I'm doing it outside under a light with a skill saw to rip and miter everything and I don't have any extra wood to make a mistake but I am almost done with build I and I have a lot of sanding before I can finish them

Why couldn't Parts Express offer videos like these, which show what unit looks like while assembling? Directions suck. Will not recommend. Also supplied batteries need to provide power advertised. Too many surprises and extra purchases necessary
I pretty-much agree with everything you said. On the plus side I still use this regularly, even after 2 years, and I still love it.
I doubt your wife will agree with you 2" x 5" is a good size...
I remember reading somewhere that that's about average size. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. 😂
Kit cost too much could be built so much cheaper
