Yes. They needed to show is how katherine's bloodline continued so elena could be born and be a petrova doppelganger. We weren't showed Nadia's child or what happened to them or anything of Nadia's upbringing. I think that was mostly because it wasn't important for the story. Katherine's background was important to understand her character more and how she became Katherine Pierce where Nadia was a minor character in comparison and didn't need a flashback like Katherine. I think they also wanted Katherine to have some sort of small redemption even if it didn't last. Nadia's child who continued the Petrova bloodline wasn't necessary to the story other than continuing the bloodline
