This video was long overdue, and kind of long-winded too, but hopefully it'll help out a bit. :D Also, you can get BRSO Articulate here: www.syntheticorchestra.com/articulate/
Hey Alex I have a question about EQ for Cello's and Double Bass, Which one deserves more of the bass frequency? (Which one should balance in the bass frequency more) And which one should be cut a little bit in the low end and how much?
The Basses generally have a much more powerful low end, cellos sound thinner than them, but they can also go higher in pitch. Also, I personally wouldn't cut low end in any of those two, but that's relative to your arrangement!
Ive been making this kind of music from time to time but did not have a clue about the explanation of the different articulations and when is a good time to use them. This is one of the best video tutorials that I have come across for orchestral production!. Great Job man!
14:58 Kind of a random note, but there is a difference in Col Legno and Bartok Pizzicato; Col Legno is hitting the strings with the wood of the bow, while Bartok Pizzicato is plucking the sting hard enough that it hits the fingerboard. They do produce a very similar sound though so I guess it doesn't really matter.
Legato would be like changing the notes with your fingers but keeping the bow going in one direction. Up bow=^ Down bow=√ So you could do sustain ^ c √d ^e √f Or legato ^cdef √cdef So the attack either there for sustain, or legato the attack is only on bow direction changes. Portamento is sliding from note to note.
Alex, I want to thank you dearly brother. I'm working on my first album and I can't emphasize enough how important your tutorials have been to me and I'm sure many more people! Keep it up man, THANK YOU!
Hey Alex, been following your tutorials for some time now and you're doing a great job! What are your computer specs though? Ram, harddrives, and computer model?
@Alex Moukala Tutorials, A big thanks Sir, You're incredible, i request you to make a new tutorial of rules and techniques of orchestration. Love from india, You teach in very smooth manner.
I watched this and fell in love with the crescendo you demonstrated. Got home to see if my library had a crescendo articulation for brass. Nope. Damn. Heartbroken. I don't want to buy a new library any time soon.
Thx this was really helpful! Haven't watched the whole live stream but did you transcribe this by ear or did you used a score? And if u did transcribed it by ear, was your ear always this good?
It was written by ear, yeah! I don't know if my ear is that good though, it's just that I've been composing completely by ear since day one, so more than a talent it's just the force of habit I'd say. :)
Thank you Alex, this is very helpful as always. I can see that you use CS and Metropolis Ark. Do you use Metropolis Ark1 or 2? Or Both? I'm only using EW libraries at the moment, because of budget reasons. I would like to expand to other libraries. It's hard to pick one or two (i would like to have them all) because they are so costly :/ I've heard Berlin Brass is great as well. Have you tried it? Is it better than Metropolis Ark 1? The cost of these is too expansive :( I wish I had more money to help me have better VST and a more professional sound.
I haven't tried that one but I think Berlin Brass, being a library that focuses completely on Brass, will be better than metropolis ark on that particular insturment family. However, Metropolis Ark 1 also includes strings, choir, percussion & band, which is a considerably versatile range of insturments. I personally only own metropolis ark 1 so far.
If you're trying to overlap or make chords with Sus Legato or Sus using BRSO articulate & metropolis ark 1 choir, I had to make them into 3 separate tracks. Even with the 'allow overlap' setting enabled on the BRSO plugin, only 1 sustain/sus legato voice would play in the chord.
Very useful tip, I usually make multiple Leg patches via Kontakt using Lacrimosa (8dio) - makes it a _little_ more difficult, but ghost patterns in FL Studio are a great help for identifying where the voices should go within the chord.
Hi mate. Thanks for tutorial on articulations.Could you recommend inexpensive orchestral library for contact or vst ( strings mainly ) with good articulations?
hi alex, im trying to learn your video from beggining and found some difficulty in this part. if i may ask how could you make "control > dynamic" in piano roll? because i only could edit it from BRSO tab
hey alex how much do you spend composing every day/week and do you sometime feel like you have spent all your creative potential of the day? Because sometimes i do and i just have to stop because i'm not coming up with no more ideas and i'm just running in circles around what i've been composing for like 2 hours. Thank you for replying i've been following you for like a couple of weeks and i feel like it helps me more and more eventually!!
It does happen. Sometimes you've got to think of productivity in terms of work done, and not hours spent. If you feel completely drained, there's no point spending that extra time just to procrastinate without making progress, that will just make you even more tired. Taking breaks is part of the job!

I've been waiting years for someone to explain it like this! Thanks Alex!

Sounds like something you'd have for either an opening cinematic or main menu of an epic game. Seriously, this is awesome.
Anthony Thomas Its the Zelda theme
It is an epic game, isn´t it
Could you please tell us how you set up your template. You seamlessly change articulation easily with each instruments. It makes the process quicker.
I talk about that in the second part of the video.
What an absolute pleasure to have found your channel! It's clear you know what you are doing and your compositions sound great.
Finally! A video that explains all this! Just subscribed! Everyone else's videos seem to assume people know all this!
Rewatching this helped me to remind myself using them more! Even I am using them I still could variate more, always :)
Awesome Alex! This definitely helps & very informative

What do you think about "Ultimate Articulation Engine by ultimate midi plugin"? It looks good.
Hyrule field?
amazing as always.
19:54 Zimmer be like : Hey Alex! Just my cellists right ?
hey why ur patterns of some ghost articulation lines are like a line and others like mountain?is there different setting for that?
Why don't you use the F6+ keys to change the articulation? Do you? Or do you have each articulation as it's own instrument?
Thank you so much, man! :)
Nice tutorial as always, but I would have wished there is an option to assign articulations without keyswitches.
21:15 this melody reminds me of a game...
Very interesting one.
hey, how open this Articulation tool I dont know, and how can I link it with symphonic orchestra?
www.syntheticorchestra.com/articulate/
Hey just wondering, what are you using for that sub sound?
I think the sub in here was mostly made with Metropolis Ark's Low Strings Patch & Bass Trombones.
Thanks bro
hello alex please please reply me what audio interface are u using?
M-Audio M-Track Plus. I hope to change it soon though!
Alex Moukala hey brother thankyou for replying please can u let me know which one would you buy?
Why do you have always two instances of the same metropolis Ark Instruments. For example Trumpets Or Horns?
Sounds like Zelda
Is this the zelda overworld theme?
how to access ARK's capsule??
hi bro
I guess beginners don't use a lot of articulations because they can't afford a good ibrary and are stuck with free options that only have legato and maybe staccato
