What if you just fill the room with furniture? An empty room will always have an echo.
Dogs Life Don yep you are right
I watched this with headphones and honestly, there is very little difference in the echo. You need to cover your hardwood floor with rugs or carpet
+MetalJesusRocks very true, I'm still getting the hang of acoustics.
Vinyl Eyezz: Carpets, Books, fourniture and vinyl collection would gave you the same result. Ad in the same panel and you're in.
The key is to get 3 out of the six planes around you. If you can't work on carpet, foam the ceiling as much as you can. The other two planes are either the left or right, either the front or back. Diffusers are used in conjunction with absorbing panels to make the room sound more natural when listening to speakers and not "dead" Diffusers are often used in mixing rooms, and not vocal booths.
- Kevin Keele
I heard a HUGE difference. Check your earphone or your ear
Those foam panels do a really nice job if you use enough of them. My laundry room in the basement is just a 3 sided concrete box, with the washer and dryer both running, it echoes so loudly I had to wear ear plugs. I bought around 75 foam panels and used 3 cans of spray adhesive, that helped a lot, can't even tell if the machines are running when I'm upstairs. But there is a drawback: now I can't hear the buzzer go off when the laundry is done.
It isn't echo is reverberation. If you use too much acoustic tiling you will deaden the sound overly and create a dry and lifeless sound from your setup. You'd get a better recording environment by putting up heavy curtains across the walls, and some nice large rugs on the floor. Avoid placing your mic near a wall or corner and speak towards the centre of the room not the edges. Of course, none of this makes for a good listening environment...for that you need a much more nuanced acoustic treatment (and better speaker placement) - good luck and if you're ever in the UK you are very welcome to come by my studio and record something :-)
I was going to tell him it is reverb, not echo, but after typing up this long response my wife said I sounded like a know-it-all so I deleted the post. :)
Thanks for all the awesome information! These tips really come in handy. :)
hey Mr new you are a great help thankyou sir I'm getting notifications in Australia I'm watching this at 11:11 pm and playing old 78s 45s and 33s in high quality sound instead of pops and crackling I can't thank you enough
Yeah, I noticed a difference. Keep up the awesome work!
Good video! I recently got into collecting and playing and your videos help me!
Thank you for answering a few questions that I had! ECHO!!!! lol
I want some of these for my room, not only to reduce echo but i think it'll look nice behind my setup.
Mr new thanks for all of your vids they are soooooo helpful now my collection sounds better PS destroy all crossly cruiser with a steam roller
You''ve confused echo with natural reverberation.
Tïr Eoghain Blackman absolutely. As soon as he said echo I thought yeh he means reverberations
Which in turn got me thinking "why would anyone want to kill that unless they were in a "dead" studio sort of situation?
Tïr Eoghain Blackman light treatment can help if you're living in an apartment with thin walls. My living room is next to my neighbor's bedroom, and I put up a few panels behind my speakers and she says she can't hear it at all anymore.
No sir. You have.
Hello Vinyl Eyezz, I have been subscribed to you for sometime now and love the content you put out. I have improved my whole listening setup over the past couple months including speakers, receiver, and turntable. I came to ask you about your LP-120 turntable. I currently have the LP-60 but since I have upgraded my speakers to a 5.1 surround sound setup by Klipsch, I now feel that upgrading my turntable would be a great choice to improve overall sound quality (like vibrations for example). I have been looking at the LP-120 and Pro Ject Debut Carbon. Both have there positives and negatives but if you were to choose one or the other what would it be. Thank you!
you mentioned sound proofing
is that a possible video on the future?
Sound-proofing, from what I've read and experienced, usually involves wooden structures and double panel, vacuum windows. The music rooms in my university have the walls made out of wood, floor covered with carpet, and the ceiling is covered with isolation foam. The two windows have double panels, with a 5cm vacuum gap. The door is locked from the outside, so someone could literally get trapped in there without communication with the outer world (good thing the windows are very big).
Good video, thanks!
Nice video. I've been interested in doing this for years but never dug into the details. Less expensive than it thought it would be.
Hello! I sent you a package today ("mystery vinyl" :D ) from Finland. Maybe 10 to 15 days and it's there, if nothing goes wrong.
Hello I listened to your demo. It was nice a fair treatment of Reverberation. I was a recording engineer many moons ago and there was a study from Western Electric the old Bell Telephone co. Now ATT They found that jute backing on carpet was the best filter of reverb in a room so how do you do that Throw rugs will help and they won't mess up the walls, of course they hung them on the walls. I agree with the bass traps as bass will concentrate in the corners which can add boominess to you playback or live music. Those wall panels are also designed to filter specific frequency range but can look weird on the wall unless you find an artistic way of presenting them. The idea of furniture is a true statement also. People are absorbent too. Curtains are great as they are adjustable so you can tune the room if you will. Heavier curtains are more absorbent. I used to design recording studios back when and there we wanted a fairly dead room to semi live. If it is to dead a musician can't hear himself and struggles to play his instrument properly. So a balance of live and dead is a must. Happy listening. :)
The best thing about not buying enough is you can always buy more. I think the echo is better, but with more foam you will be able to reduce it even more.
I recommend the incredible true story by logic. Congrats on 70,000!!!
Acoustic treatment is never bad but completely eliminating echo (or more precisely reverberation, that's what you talk albout) is not a good idea, it takes life away from the music. Even recording/mastering studios aren't totally treated, they usually have only the necessary for taming resonance and first reflections
I strongly disagree regarding recorded music. Any reverb, echo, etc. that will enhance the music is in the recording. The exception would be intentionally dry recordings. Then you need some room acoustics added. But normally, anything the room adds to the sound is called "distortion" for the simple reason that it is not part of the original recording. It is the room coloring the sound. And since the engineers did not have the acoustic characteristics of your particular room or car or whatever in mind when they made the recording, it will usually always sound better with maximum sound deadening.
You notice it when you walk into the demo rooms in the VERY high end hi-fi shops. The rooms sound practically like anechoic chambers.
Jarrett, if you get the chance to, go into an anechoic chamber. There, all walls, floor and ceiling are covered with professional grade acoustic foam. It cuts out ALL echo, and the effect is really weird! You experience true silence, and all you can hear is the blood pumping round your head. If you speak, shout or clap your hands it is completely flat.
Carpet is also pretty good at getting rid of echoes.
Do u have a video about soundproofing ?
? A lot of thought . Thanks.
Hey, I have a question!!
I have an AT-LP120-USB turntable as well as the AT-M50x headphones. I'm not a particular fan of speakers, I really love the personal experience with headphones instead. But I'm really stuck here, I've been pouring myself over so much information that I'm just overwhelmed with. So if I could get either you, or just anyone really to recommend me a quality headphone amp. But my budget is really 200$, because I don't want to end up spending more than I did with my turntable. I've been leaning towards the Schitt Magni 2. Because of the preamp in the LP120, I shouldn't need a preamp. However, I know on this turntable you have the ability to turn it off and switch to an exterior preamp as well, and for this I was thinking the mani. Is this possible to do? Connecting my LP120 to the mani, and then connecting and stacking the magni 2 on top, which I will then plug my headphones into?? Thoughts or recommendations?? Thanks, really need some help here!! :)
Is it better to get a pre amp and a amplifier or get them built into the speakers and the record player? I know built in is Easy to install.
I have a "alright" record player and I want to upgrade.
If you're still gonna be in San Antonio, there's gonna be a free record convention next Saturday! It'd be cool if we run into each other!
when I was in Seattle I turned my two car garage into a recording studio. I got a bunch of old carpet free off the internet and cut it into strips 18 inches wide and then cut those strips into pieces 3 ft long. I hung them from the ceiling with a single screw in the middle so they draped down with two 18-inch lengths. I hung them randomly at random angles and it drastically reduced the reverberation in the room. I've always avoided the foam panels because they're just too expensive for what they are, at least for my blood. the foam panels obviously would look better in a room than my carpet idea but neither would be acceptable to my wife.☺
I for one can relate. Whenever i bring my turntable to church i always notice a lot of echo.
I also would like to see a video on soundproofing.
So where are you installing the panels, Texas or California?
+Martin Page Texas
Sometimes the foam does not work due to the configuration of the room, construction materials, etc. Sometimes a combination of cork panels and foam do the trick nicely. In my case, since my house is all made out of concrete and cinder block, the echo is not as bad as a room made out of wood and gybsum board, which is more sensitive to sound. But, in effect, the foams presented on this video do work nicely when configured properly. Also, instead of using the 3M thingies...try using some glue. There is a specific glue that can be used with these foam panels, as well as cork panels.
Isn't that reverb?
According to a little research I made years ago; many people recommended the use of thick blankets as a cheap substitute for that kind of foam for suppressing the reverberations. Has anyone tried it? I bet it makes a decent job, although it won't be anywhere as good looking as the foam
Hey Vinyl Eyezz is this a good record player the aiwa PX-E860 ?
Love the channel, and this is a great video, but what you're dealing with here is reverberation, not echo. Echos occur when a sound wave bounces off of a single, distant surface, so that you can hear the sound clearly as it returns. Reverberation, or reverb, is caused by sound bouncing back and forth off of many nearby surfaces. Keep spinning that vinyl!
Edit: Sorry, looks like others already commented on it. Sorry to pile it on!
Hey Jarrett, how are those bass traps? Recently I saw some youtube vids where they said, they are not so great, but I think they are full of it. Hey and what RTR did you get?
Yup, bass traps in top and bottom corners. Acoustic panels on ceiling and opposing walls so that sound is not reflected between facing walls. Not too much though or you run the risk of creating a 'dead room' - a little resonance should be noticeable!
definitely better with the foam but carpet would help rather than the wooden floor! I have carpet and heavy curtains and this helps...
Hey I have a question... whats your 2nd favorite turntable? anything other than the l.p. 120
hey guys I found a lp120 like new at my local pawn shop for 190 i feel like that's a very good price is there anything I need to look out for thanks in advance
You'll find that the addition of rugs, carpeting, draperies and upholstered furniture will aid immensely in eliminating much of that echo.
You should do a sound proofing guide! :)
Use "Pritt Stick" to stick your panels on the wall. It works great.
Hi, if I install acoustic foam do I need to cover the whole room or just 50%/75%? I’m doing antminer mining. Besides does acoustic foam suitable for reducing sound?
Offender 99 the more the better realistically. It just comes down to your budget man
Alright bro! Thanks
HI! I have a question for you. I have a copy of Nirvana- Nevermind On vinyl and when he sings "Ss" or "Zz" it Sounds distorted.
But if I put on my Ray Charles LP it sound amazing. Is it possible that the album was badly mastered or I have a bad stylus? What is your opinion? Is the Nirvana record mastered badly?
It could be a poor pressing. But it's more likely your stylus needs replacing or your cartridge isn't aligned properly.
thomasLike Here's your daily vocab word. that means "The S's are splattered."
I bet it's a bad pressing. I hate to say it, but maybe you should listen to it digitally and see if it has the same issue.
I'm a believer in not buying newer music on vinyl. That record would have been recorded digitally, and then put onto an analog format, which actually degrades the sound. When it was recorded digitally, you might as well get the CD. but the CD just isn't as luxurious.
While I agree with the whole "buy analog recorded albums on analog" motto, I believe Nevermind, and alot of 90s albums, were recorded on Reel to Reel.
BGM Live! You are correct. I just checked the back of my Nevermind CD and it says AAD (recorded analog, mastered analog, put on digital format). I thought it would be digital, because I only found the name of the person who mastered it for CD, I didn't find anybody who mastered it for Vinyl, I assumed they just used the CD version because Vinyl was an afterthought at that point.
I think that you did good
i dont even owm vinyls, but i love this channel
Benedikt Sadboi *vinyl
Benedikt Sadboi please refer to them as phono discs. nah jk, vinyl record is probably more proper than "vinyls". But seriously don't call them "vinyls".
Well, I'm comfortable with admitting I learned something today.
BionicJohn awwww
you should start. it a great hobbit to get into.
Is teac mc-d800 good
SMG has a great video on how to make your own bass traps I highly recommend it. by the way, SMG is another RUclips site regarding recording studios that is a lot of fun but you got to get past the language.
More of what you're hearing is reverb not echo. Echo is present but reverb is what's mostly being heard.
Hey Jarrett, I was wondering if i could get your input on the Fluance RT81 turntable. its the perfect price point for me but i dont know if i should get it or dish out the extra 50 for the lp 120. im kinda tight on cash at the moment
Trey Usher That turntable looks good. I know I'm not Jarrett, but still.
It looks similar enough to the Audio Technica LP-120 that I would bet you it is built on the same chassis. For example, a Chinese company whose name I can't remember now has built the same turntable chassis since the early nineties, and sold it to Optimus, Pioneer, RCA, Sony, and Audio Technica. They're all the same turntable, and you may have heard of the Audio Technical LP-60 being a good turntable. It's the same as the Pioneer PL-990, just in more colors and cheaper.
The moral of my story is that it's exactly the same, probably has the same chassis and a lot of the same parts as the LP-120, they just slap a different name on it.
I say you should buy vintage. If you find a vintage turntable (not too vintage, probably late 70's to 80's) with a counterweight, good, replaceable cartridge, and everything else you want, go for it. Any reasonably nice turntable from back then would be built way better than most modern turntables. And old turntables can be had for cheap.
If you don't feel like worrying about the chance of it being broken, the one you picked looks just fine.
Gram hey thanks anyway bud! still good to hear from you thanks a lot
If you're really hard up, the LP60 suits me just fine. Only 100 bucks.
Leon thepro yeah no i know i have a pair of headphones on the way and a tube amp picked out.
+VinylEyezz
What are your thoughts on the house of marley turntable?
Nevermind i've read the reviews and it sucks!
wow i never thought it be that big of a differnet. byw i live in a 10 by 12 room so not so big
Get yourself Some more Foam Jarrett!!!
Which knife should I use:)
you should do a vinyl related giveaway in the future.
Jarrett: * adds hundreds of dollars worth of isolation foam *
Jarrett: 1:30 "Alright! So, clearly, adding a little foam..."
Me: * cries in poor *
Vinyl Eyezz do you know Visage (Band) if you do can you please show us your Visage vinyl pls im a huge fan of you thanks
Make a video of how to open a record the proper way thanks :)
Hey Jarrett! Have you heard the new NIN song?
Cover your floors with some mats or carpet tiles and try your test again. The difference will be noticeable.
I want to make my room like the worlds quietest room what should I buy?
r011ing_thunder lots and lots of acoustic panels haha
Yeah.. I dont want my house to have weird foam all over the walls haha
Great idea!
Hi man, I wrote a message to you on facebook (on the vinyleyezz page), did you get it? Love your videos btw ;)
Simple solution: Play music low and you won't have echo. Play music loud you will get echo! So stop playing loud music and save your ears. 40 years of listening to low volume music does wonders to echo free music!❤️🤓
When this showed up in my inbox this morning, the thumbnail hadn't loaded, so I assumed it was going to be something about destroying an Amazon Echo.
If I had the room, I'd totally buy some acoustic paneling. Then again, my room hardly has any echo, and the only recording I ever do is simple, basic guitar practice on a super cheap Panasonic cassette recorder, so they'd be... pointless.
to be honest there wasn't much difference I'd like to know how much sound proofing can help me to stop hearing a TV from upstairs
why is eco bad what if your being stab to death and you screening for help but no one can here you because the walls covered in foam
+Dave Cakemen lol
Dave Cakemen but dude the foam doesn't mute the sound, he said that at the beginning of the vid. the foam just eliminates echo, it doesn't cancel out sound entirely. Your neighbors should hear you just fine when you're being stabbed to death.
and because the echo has been eliminated, the neighbors will be able to understand clearly exactly the words you're screaming out
JBarber3d yes, like " please no! I have 50 cats that need my constant attention" ~ last words.
lol! "Please no!! My records need my attention!!" hahaha
Dude you need to stop calling it echo. It's reverb. Echo is a much more exaggerated version and only occurs in certain spaces.
I'm gonna fill a whole 12*12 room with foam
Are you still in Texas or are you back in Cali?
I noticed a difference in the room listening on my phone
No echo in my room, because it's small, not big
Very interesting video!
catch him on his drone
there was a difference
I love records but dont have money for a turntable
Save up. Check Goodwill, pawn shops and thrift shops, flea markets. It's worth it.
where are youu
It is much cheaper and easier to use REW or DIRAC, rather than make your room weird and ugly. ;-)
I very much like the feel your videos have when you are in a real space like your room and not a void. I don't approve of the new background it's so corny
Chilly Bavez He's temporarily living in Texas.
I difference was very minuscule to me...
there wasnt much difference tbh and im listening through a gaming headset razer kraken 7.1, i think they are....
Are all crosleys bad
Gixel Martinez Yes. I bought a player similar to a Crosley before doing any research as my first record player, watched some videos about them, looked at pictures, and when I got it I noticed that the hardware was identical to all other cheap players. The audio technica lp60 is only about 30 dollars more, and it has a diamond tipped needle instead of the ceramic one that all crosley like players have.
Get an audio technica lp60. 😀
my computer is a stuffed like a crosly
No need for headphones my phone speaker easily sounds different
I've watched your channel now for a year and it is amazing, I look forward to your videos every week. Mine name is Jack and I'm 14 and I'm the lead guitarist and co-lead singer of the alternative rock/garage rock band called the Rapid Jags you should check us out!!
But what if you are married or otherwise in a relationship - how do you get sticking all tht stuff to the wall by your partner??
What a great idea. When I use this foam in our living room my wife kick my ass. :) Not so good ...
Thanks for this video.
ik laat je verdwijnen netgoals je echo
I think he jumped the gun with posting this video. Yeah, acoustic foam can deaden the rerverb in a room, but this video doesn't do a good enough job telling us why we'd want to do this? Recording studio use? Music listening? 1st reflection? 2nd reflection? Whats too much foam? Alternatives? Why why why?
Please ditch the green screen
The difference is audible.
First
Cameron A. I got here first. but I didn't comment first
Acoustic Foam is a waste of Money.
hey Mr new you are a great help thankyou sir I'm getting notifications in Australia I'm watching this at 11:11 pm and playing old 78s 45s and 33s in high quality sound instead of pops and crackling I can't thank you enough
