- Over a breakfast of tortas - Mexican sandwiches filled, in this case, with Rick’s quick Mexican scrambled eggs, beans, and avocados - Rick and his daughter, Lanie, plan an all-day torta marathon in Mexico City.
Their quest beings at the city’s charming Sunday flea market, Lagunilla, where they check out some simple, yet mouthwatering tortas, with a succulent filling of salt cod bacalao.
Next stop: Don Polo, a gleaming 1950s-style chrome and neon diner, famous for its menu of griddled tortas. Rick and Lanie watch how they’re made and try a Cubana with chorizo, pork and ham. Then it’s on to El Pialadero - The Cattle Roper - for the famed Guadalajara specialty, Tortas Ahogadas, or “drowned” sandwiches, stuffed with juicy braised beef and smothered in a brothy tomato-oregano sauce.
It’s a treat so irresistibly messy that it’s served with plastic gloves. Back in Chicago, father and daughter cook up another plan: a backyard torta party for Lanie and her friends - all prepared outdoors at the barbecue. There are Grilled Skirt Steak Tortas and Grilled Zucchini Tortas, along with an Avocado Cilantro Mayo and a Chipotle Salsa to spread on them. In his backyard vegetable patch, Rick shares tips on growing salad greens and pairing them with various kinds of dressings.
Then he and Lanie prepare two salads,Mesclun with Lime-Cilantro Dressing and Boston Lettuce with Creamy Queso Añejo Dressing to round out this casual Mexican “sandwich spread.”

Now that is a Daddy/Daughter date. Glad to see I'm not the only Dad who spoils his daughters, no matter their age.
?
Yes of course! I know you look forward to opportunities to spend quality time learning and smiling together. Bless you for being there for your family
@@crimsonfancy what a bizarre comment
@@whereRbearsTeeth How so? Don't like the blessing or the family values? Please do expound.
@@crimsonfancy family values?? You seem delusional
I am speechless ❤. Rick’s daughter is Absolutely Beautiful & a Great Personality about Her. Rick is A Master Chef & My Favorite. Viva la Mexicana 🇲🇽 Delicious x1,000%. ✅❤️❤️🇲🇽🙏
I just love your videos especially when Lanie is in them. She is so adorable and classy! This, as always, is a fabulous video. Thank you Rick for your generosity in sharing with us not only the videos but also the incredible recipes… we love you!! 💗💗💗💗💗
Cool shirt, Rick. "one guey"
Since 2000, this series has been debuting on public television since 2019. This series ended on public television
Great ideas for great food....but these videos always make me hungry!
My daughter lived in Mexico City for four years. I got to visit only once but I fell in love with it. The food! The people! So I love your show - I got your book and I love creating the recipes of my favorite food. ( I wish she would move back - lol)
The first time I had a torta was in 1990-91 in Temecula Ca and ever since I have been hooked. Great video❤️
Nice episode chef.
I swear, I don't know if it's the latitude or the longitude lines, but BOLILLOS taste AMAZING across the border!
Tortathon! I'm in!
looks delicious. thanks for the content.
. . still slavering on those breakfast tortas; yet, Rick & Lanie take (me) on tour: all-dayTORTA marathon in Mexico City! Then, inRick's Chicago kitchen. I'm tak'n notes on grilled steak/zucchini Tortas; I totally breakdown emotionally, with their Family Love! Rick Bayless & Lanie--vibrant, Fresh American Icons!
chefs Ricky Mexican food 2024👍✍️👍✍️
I could tell this was an older episode, but it's still so funny to see the shot of the ipod. 10:38
Your daughter is very sweet. Hopefully you already know that. Good asset had been added to your show 'Mexico: One Plate at a Time.' 🤭
Bayless 2024. You have a good heart and this is what this country needs right now.
Para mi? Tortas primero. Pero me encanta tacos y tostadas y todas comidas a Rick Bayless. siempre fresca y siempre prefecta.
Y con bacalao? Mejor!
Food looks great as usual, but where did you get the T shirt? Very funny 👍✌️☮️
I like that shirt too! Just Google “one güey t shirt”, and a few options pop up.
El Pialadero de Guadalajara is one of my favorite places in México City! And it's conveniently located just a few minute walk from the entrance to Chapultapec park!
American cooks can learn a lot from Mexican Tortas. Tortas always have a layer of aguacate (avocado). Any American sandwich would be better with it. Try Grilled Cheese with avocado. Or a burger or a hot dog. Pulled pork is good but great with avocado.
Once I asked for a torta de la barda, sin carne, well they didn't put beef but it had ham, or carnitas or something like that. It's hard to explain to them that for me carne is meat/flesh, not just beef. I should have just asked for a torta with aguacate, frijoles, y queso.
Having trouble with the metal instruments in the non stick pan, not going to lie
Very nice episode ... recently i made tortas de Milanesa? Except i used Japanese katsu method to batter then rolled around and pressed in medium crum panko. I manipulate it around until i cant see beef at all then i fry it golded.
I love the concept of a sandwich that requires the use of a plastic glove.
Although...wearing a very nice, white shirt while eating one is either showing off shamelessly or being entirely too laissez-faire about tempting fate 😄
Remember When She Was a Little Girl Now a Lovely Young Lady.
Is this an old episode, or is Lanie aging in reverse?
Hey! rick how you doing?
Great content as usual -- but a little too much Donald and Ivana.
SO THEY CALL SANDWICHES TORTAS IN MEXICO !!!
Rick love yor vids, but your daughter is Beautiful 😍!
And she clearly loves sher dad.
You gotta be kidding me. You and skip bayless have to be brothers. Not only do you have the same last name, y’all look, and sound the same.
Bayless you should come try the Mexican cuisine here in corpus christi texas........it's not worth a shit........
La cubana de Don Polo no lleva quesillo. Ya no están chidas esas tortas. Queda la nostalgia.
I think this is a very old video reposted....
I used to go there with My family, 30 years ago. My favorite was the cubana.
Nice. That music was really loud (around 6:50 when they are making the tortas, also at the end when they are eating) and annoying. Try to keep it low so we can enjoy the video peacefully.
Grow up
You realize this is like 15 years old right ? Also it's not like he was working the mixing board back then.
Daughter couldn't be any more annoying.... Just show the Tortas, Rick. Had to quit 6 minutes in.
