    💡Augustin's pro tip for memorization 💡 Play the violin part from memory with the right hand on the piano. This way, your brain can't access the muscle memory of the left hand and you can check if you really know all the notes of the pieces.

    💡Augustin's pro tip for efficient practice💡Don't repeat a broken passage hoping that it will somehow get better over time. Instead, fix it first and then repeat the corrected passage. This way, the available time can be used to make the correct passage stick.
    Also, listen very closely to your own playing, even if it's frustrating. Consider different possible causes for your current problem (string crossing? shift? left-right coordination? ...) and keep the changes that improve the passage.

    • @Jasper_the_Cat
      @Jasper_the_Cat 4 месяца назад +2

      @@procrastipractice It's really great advice. Although I play guitar, because there are always about 4-5 different ways of transitioning from one phrase to the next on guitar, even if something isn't a technical problem per se, it's also helpful to experiment with different ways of doing it to balance between the timbre quality as well as smoothness of the transition. For me it's like chess because one movement or choice often has several downstream effects, so you have to work through a puzzle not just in the context of a single phrase but also everything which comes before and after. I'm trying to become much more intentional in my playing - it's a lot of work and takes more time, but I believe it's worth it.

    💡Augustin's pro tip for intonation 💡The left hand tends to return to a relaxed shape with equidistant fingers. If you are out of tune, ask yourself what the hand-shape in the current passage is and if the hand has returned to the more relaxed (but wrong shape). In general, identify and practice the sequence of hand-shapes in a piece and how they morph into each other.

    Hollly shiiiiit never have i imagined seeing Augustin on Twoset!!! And also, can I just say, what a wonderful idea it is to have Eddy and Brett sitting behind desks, unlike on sofas, like the past few episodes? As an OG fan, the talking vids that I've really enjoyed were ones like "talking about our experiene in music uni", "opening up about our mental health", "never have I ever", etc. Having E and B sitting closer (in the past) enabled their non-verbal interaction too or even randomly jumping off of their seats laughing, which added a dynamic to their dialogue. So far I've kept my opinions to myself because I support Twoset no matter what and I watch their stuff on loop anyway, but because I'm so happy for this more OG-style set-up, I thought I'd write a few words. Anyway, thoroughly loved every single moment of this and Hadelich seems like such a down-to-earth guyyyyy

    Augustin is an awesome guy. He performed out here in Hawaii, where is a tradition for a guest artist to get a flower lei after his performance. He played Beethoven magnificently in the first half of the concert. At the end of the concert, he came out presented a lei to JoAnn Falletta, who is our emeritus conductor.

    I thought Augustin's closing comment about approaching music and everything in life with a playful attitude was good. As he mentioned earlier in the episode, being too into a piece in an intellectual way and losing the playful attitude, or what is called "beginner's mind" in Zen philosophy, can hinder your experience of it. Playing without tension is always important, and having a mental attitude of playfulness can help reduce mental and physical tension when approaching anything.

  • @maxdonaldson861
    @maxdonaldson861 Месяц назад +3

    Just commenting to get this thought out of my head: a lot of what Augustin said closely matched my experience of learning physics (I'm doing an undergraduate degree right now), and with what I know about physics education research. The process of solving hard problems again and again forges connections in your brain that allow you to use past experience to solve problems quicker in the future. You gradually gain an intuition for which techniques (in physics)/solutions (in violin practice) will help you make progress. Also, I used to not be able to bear the method of practice based on diagnosing problems and figuring out the best solutions, because I was so self-critical that I couldn't bear to e.g. record myself. But since I stopped lessons and now just play in orchestras and chamber groups for fun, I have learned to be more curious (playful in Augustin's words) in how I practice, and I'm more willing to strategise. I think it's incredible that Augustin manages to keep that spirit up when he is under such pressure. Also, Augustin's recent experience of getting into bluegrass and country music is exactly the experience I have recently had with Scottish folk music. Suddenly a whole world of new repertoire and a completely different way of playing opened up to me, where they place value on different musical skills than in classical music. But classical music is such a good grounding with which to approach other genres.

    His comment about saying no if you're not ready reminded me of something that Jeff Dunham (a comedian) said about being scouted by the Tonight Show early in his career, and being told at that time that he wasn't ready yet. He was really down about it but was told by them, "Better five years too late than one day too early." And indeed when he finally got onto the show, he aced it. There's nothing more important than building a reputation as RELIABLE. You need to be known as clutch -- and that means knowing when you aren't ready yet.

    I like that this channel is for nerds like me who watch twoset to discover new things, bc it was an issue for an while. Where on the main channel was mixed comedy and serious stuff. It makes it easier now. Thank you, for inviting Augustin Handelich it was EPICCCC! :D
