Love those older John Deeres. I started with a 14SB like yours, next bought a JX75, and sold that to buy the best walk behind JD ever made, a Commercial JX85 which I still own to this day. I gave the 14SB to my Brother and it's still going strong to this day, just a fantastic series of mowers.

I purchased one in the mid 80’s, still was using til the other day, it just quit, recoil very difficulty to pull. Luckily I was given same machine for parts, I will be getting to it week to try to get one good running machine. I love this mower, back then it was just over $600.

I Just got one from my neighbor. He said he said he hasn’t started it for a while. I’m going to clean it up and give it a shot. Hope it works. Maybe I’ll change the oil and filter. Looks like a nice machine.

Thank you for the video. I have one of these mowers and love it. Have used it about thirty hours a year since I bought it new in the ‘90s, maybe 1995. So close to a thousand hours. The mower has performed well, just basic, almost minimal, maintenance. Had to clean the carb a few times and the rear wheel bolts have snapped three or four times. Fuel always ethanol free. I think it cost me about five hunded American. A lot of money for a mower back then. But I wanted the best push mower out there. I think I got it.
What happened to the mowers in the video? Thanks again.

Thanks for watching. I still have both of these mowers. One is now a parts mower and I used a couple of parts from it for the other one. I used the good one weekly for mowing some areas here that are hard to mow with the tractor, and it’s chugging right along just fine, but currently hibernating in the shed for the winter.

I have one that is going on 30 years of service and still running strong. I just bought a busted up one this week as a spare much the same as you have. Parts are still available it seems to.

Yeah I think a good amount of parts are still available, but some prices can be pretty high. I did order some new wheels the other day and the price was reasonable.

Can you send me some close up photos of the throttle linkage? My mower runs great but it will not throttle up. I’m thinking it’s missing a spring or something?
    Thanks

Nice mowers! I like the design of them. The silver with the old style Deere badge is very cool

Thanks! I like them, they’re probably not as ergonomic as new mowers but they seem to be built very well.

@@outdoorpowerhouse I've never had a walk behind with handles that can adjust as tall as these stock. For me, its farm more comfortable to use than anything else.

Just got one, going to try and get it running. Would be nice to tear down the transmission on the one on the right to see what failed.

From what I can tell, it was the cable for the engagement that failed.

Transmission not moving could be a rock or stick stuck in the track that the large ball bearings roll on under the deck.

No wonder they were so expensive back when they were made.

I have 2 that I have running top notch! One is a 1992 and the other is a 1996. I've replaced a number of the parts on the 1992 including the BBC, carburetor, and some of the cables! The 1996 has had the front wheels replaced as well as the BBC cable and carburetor. I also added the oil filter kits to both of my machines.
What horsepower are your 2? That will also tell you the year because your silver handle one is definitely a couple years new than 1991.

    • @outdoorpowerhouse
      @outdoorpowerhouse  2 года назад

Both are 5 horsepower, the chrome handled one is a '91 going by the serial number charts I've found. The charts also listed which years were chrome or black handled and it appears that sometime in 1993 they switched from chrome to black handles.

Hey Steven, I have a 14sc I recently added the filter manifold to. Mine seems to smoke a bit on startup, did you add any other parts or notice any change in yours? Thanks for any info.

@@smalls6661 Hey. Is it a 14SB or 14SC? The 14SC was a commercial model and zone start without the Blade Brake Clutch. The 14SC came standard with the oil filter kit. My only thought was if you had to put it on, did you put in the correct rubber gasket that is supposed to come with the oil filter kit or new ones can be ordered separately?
