Effortless singing by a true master. You can even hear him inhaling before he sings the next line. Wonderful voice, relaxed delivery, lovely song. Don't think he ever got full recognition. Thanks Roger, and many thanks to the Poster.

Hearing him inhaling is an artifact of how the song was mixed/mastered. It was probably tracked with some very strong compression, which raises the volume of the soft parts and reduces the volume of the hard parts. It makes a great recording, and makes the singer's voice sound intimate and interesting. This is my absolute favourite Roger Whittaker song. When he brought it out in 1975, I was just 10 years old. I didn't get the song until 4 years later when I went to town with my mum & I had £5 given to me as a birthday present. I found the LP, 20 All Time Greats, but I was 25p short. My mum question why I wanted it, thinking I'd be wanting something more of the music of the times, but no, I was absolutely adamant, & she gave me the 25p. I've still got that LP, even though I can't play it anymore. Such fond memories of this guy & his music, Rest in Peace Roger.
I probably haven't heard this beautiful song in about 30 years. I remember listening to it as a kid. My mother had either a 45 single or an LP of Roger's. It was one of her favorite songs as well as mine. Such a smooth, rich and pleasant voice to listen to.

@@nickprica3127 honestly I agree but there are some modern singers who’s songs echo back to that older style. Look up “passenger” the music made by this individual is fantastic
I first heard this song as a schoolboy at aged nine, and it moved me even then. Having had an ex-pat career, over nine countries and 30-odd years,, and always longing to return to England, I still find it moving to this day. It's truly beautiful song, wonderfully delivered by Roger. The lyrics still stir me and the melody and the message remains uplifting to this day. Thanks Roger!
A multi-talented composer and musician. A brilliant whistler and a velvet voice. This song has lyrics sent in by a lyricist and music written by Whittaker.
I've always loved this song ever since it sailed to #2 in the UK charts in the summer of 1975. My father loved it to and would randomly sing it to my Mum (Pops couldn't sing for nuts, but it's a special memory all the same ,lol). "For you are beautiful and I have loved you dearly, more dearly than the spoken world can tell..."

18 yrs old. 1975. My mother tearfully played this on the stereo the afternoon I left for Naval Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois. Never will forget it. The beginning of a 4 year adventure at sea with the World’s Greatest Navy. Seems like only yesterday. Great song.
Mercian7...Thank you. I might add that on the day I left, I left behind a girl I truly loved. THAT really was difficult. After my 4 years of service, we married (41 years soon) , raised 2 kids and are recently retired. I’ve had more blessings than I deserve. God bless you. I wish you the same.

The sad passing of Roger Whittaker leaves a huge void in the great but forgotten music of yesteryear of which he was a big part. He and his songs are unforgettable.
Back in the 70s this song was starting when my clock radio came on . I awoke to a flash of a dream of tropical paradise sunrise/sunset in full color and that warm fuzzy feeling of love smiling. My husband asked what you so happy about as I trotted to the kitchen to make coffee. I love this song as that flashback happens every time I hear this song. Ahhh the warm fuzzies …
Hands down one of the best artists of all time. How poor our world would have been without him. RIP Roger Whittaker's parents didn't approve of nor support his career choice and the rift with his father was never resolved. His parents were violently attacked in 1989 in their Nairobi home, killing his father. The perpetrators were never caught. Whittaker said of the incident: "It will affect me for the rest of my life, but I believe we should all live without hate if we can".
Now I listen to this touching ballad as last farewell to you. R.I.P. Roger. Thank you for all the wonderful emotions that you have given to your audience through your music!

My dad loved him and we played this at his funeral. I loved listening to it with him in the car on the old 8track.
Truly... one of the greatest songs ever...
The story of how it came to be, is amazing .
I left UK in 1968 for USA. I love my adopted country very much, but this is such a beautiful song. Makes me homesick.
I was joining the army when this hit the charts in 1975. Such a great song, in days of simplistic moving music.
the songs of yester year had a story line or a meaning im 58 and can not find anything in todays music but im glad to have lived in what i think were better times
Ha!
Me too!
@@nickprica3127 honestly I agree but there are some modern singers who’s songs echo back to that older style. Look up “passenger” the music made by this individual is fantastic
I hope you mean 'simple' rather than 'simplistic'.
Thanks for completing and love ❤️
A multi-talented composer and musician. A brilliant whistler and a velvet voice. This song has lyrics sent in by a lyricist and music written by Whittaker.
RIP Mr Whitaker, my mother used to play his records, "un elephant sur mon balcon" was a childhood song I'll never forget.
His voice sings the words of history! How can anyone not love these words of tongue from the master of our past.
A truly great song the 1970's were made for this song!! Gets my vote certainly. Thank you Roger.
Thanks for completing and love ❤️
All time classic brings a tear to my eye !
Magnificent voice! Wonderful memories of this song and its brilliant instrumentation. Rest in peace, Roger Whittaker. ❤
My first memories of any song were of this song when I was about 3 - 4 years old. I grew up in an orphanage in London in the early 1970s and the ladies who worked there used to sing it to the kids when it was on the radio.
18 yrs old. 1975. My mother tearfully played this on the stereo the afternoon I left for Naval Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois. Never will forget it. The beginning of a 4 year adventure at sea with the World’s Greatest Navy. Seems like only yesterday. Great song.
Thatll be the Royal Navy then..not really. God bless.

@@kcd11d6 Then I hope life has been good to you ever since.
@@kcd11d6 Good stuff..Roger Whittaker was my Fathers favouright singer and he looked like him.
I have been pretty lucky to be fair..with those I have known and loved. BTW my Father was an Americophile as am I.
The sad passing of Roger Whittaker leaves a huge void in the great but forgotten music of yesteryear of which he was a big part. He and his songs are unforgettable.
This sound is so beautifully and moving, I am left here in tears. Took me way back into the past.
This song was played at my grandads funeral he loved Rodger and the song really resonates with me❤
Hands down one of the best artists of all time. How poor our world would have been without him. RIP
Roger Whittaker's parents didn't approve of nor support his career choice and the rift with his father was never resolved. His parents were violently attacked in 1989 in their Nairobi home, killing his father. The perpetrators were never caught. Whittaker said of the incident: "It will affect me for the rest of my life, but I believe we should all live without hate if we can".
😢😢😢😢.
Now I listen to this touching ballad as last farewell to you. R.I.P. Roger. Thank you for all the wonderful emotions that you have given to your audience through your music!
My dear old father is 85 and from Glasgow' Scotland , this Is the only song that makes him cry 😢😢😢
God bless your dad, makes me cry too, brilliant song and lyrics
I was brought up on Rodger whittaker. He has an amazing voice. When I go on long walks I listen to his albums. Can't get better than that.
