    as one article I have read. to compare the unifiers, it to look at their response to a songbird that refuses to sing.
    Nobunaga: if the bird won't sing, kill it. (unity through force)
    Hideyoshi: if the bird won't sing, coerce it to sing (unity through diplomacy)
    Ieyasu: if the bird won't sing, wait for it to sing. (unity through perseverance)

      Unless Mitsuhide is a complete fool he would have revealed Hideyoshi's part in the conspiracy before they fought, plus he and Hideyoshi hated one another by all accounts. Also it was a near run thing where any one of Nobunaga's other vassals could have beaten Hideyoshi to killing Mitsuhide and claimed vengeance for Nobunaga, thus putting them in position to lead the Oda clan afterwards.

    Ah... Hideyoshi the man of Irony. The peasant who was able to rise up through the ranks to be at the highest post (he can be) who issued the Separation Edict... The law which prevents other peasants to be able to do the same... Hideyoshi, A hard-working man turned Tyrant... One case of "Absolute power corrupts absolutely".
    I mean... It's not that hard to see how it came to this. Hideyoshi's life is basically a story of "bullied nerd turned bullies' boss". As an ambitious man who wants to rise through the rank... Even though his skills and merits are greater than many of his peers, He needs to act humble and meek... Making himself seen as a useful clown in order to avoid all the jealousy and as many problems as he can from other officers since he's just a lowborn peasant in the rank of Samurai. With all those pent-up feelings from the humiliations he has to put up with, It's not that surprising to see him go mad with power when he finally reached the top where everyone has to suck up to him (or face his army).

      That's not what he did, you know. The separation edict says that the citizenry had to choose to become a full time samurai or a full time farmer and stick with it. At the time, soldiers were conscripted from the peasantry, so the people farm when there's no battle, but had to suit up for battle when there's war. Because of this, if the army ever lost too many soldiers, then nobody can farm, and it will cause economic problems. With this edict, those who don't want to fight can just farm full time, and those who want to be soldiers don't have to be farmers even when there's no fighting.

    • @ThanoosUdom

If any peasant abandons their fields and engages in commerce or wage labor, not only they themself but their fellow villagers will be punished. Those not involved in either military service or working the fields will be investigated and expelled. Meaning... Lesser chance for low-born person to become able or/and to rise up to a high position.
      With rule which mandated that peasant can only stick to two designated things or else be punish, That's narrowed down the ways for ordinary low-class citizen to achieve great enough merit(s) to earn a standing on the ground where they could start claiming ranks. Not to mention that It's not only limiting the probability of taking on the extraordinary path of succession like the one Hideyoshi takes but also discouraging people to do so.
      Talents and connections are pursued and cultivated... With lesser to almost no prospect of using them to better one standing, Any ability other than what needed to do their designated job(s) is likely to be disregarded as useless or not worth spending time acquiring for most people at the time which lead to a lower rate of capability from peasant class.
      So... Whether Hideyoshi intended for that to happen or not, He did make it harder for other fellow low-born individuals to be able to do what he did.

    One other factor that made the whole successor issue of whose amongst ol Nobby's remaining sons should take over the clan,even more muddy and complex,is that it is unclear whether who's older between Nobutaka and Nobukatsu is. because they have different mothers.
    Nobutaka's mum is a peasant woman named Sakichi, whilst Nobukatsu's mum is lady Kitsune,a daughter of the wealthy Ikoma clan. Who,in turn kinda block off Hideyoshi's initial support for his choice of Nobukatsu,since y'know,if you are the Ikoma,why would you gave Nobukatsu up into Hideyoshi's sway? so Hideyoshi took Hidenobu instead. And in retaliation, Nobukatsu asked for Tokugawa's support. Which in turn,might looked very unfavorable for the rest of the inner retainer clans of the Oda,I mean,the inner retainer clans would think: why would you ask for help from outsider clans when we are still here? You don't trust us? It might pushed them to the other camps. leaving Nobukatsu's block of supporters really bare and scattered all over.
    The odds is firmly stacked against poor ol'Nobutaka here,granted he showed some political savy by getting Shibata's support using her aunt and by knowing Shibata at that point don't have an heir yet (Shibata's heir died young).
    And if I might add,as mentioned,Rikyu Sen's execution is also motivated by how influential he is among the merchants of Sakai,a very lucrative port town near Osaka where Hideyoshi is building his powerbase. With Rikyu gone,all that wealth is easier for Hideyoshi to take and utilize.

  • @nightstriker3994
    @nightstriker3994 3 года назад +3

    Shocking. I've heard so many great things about Oda Nobunaga, how his clan in one of the castles was severely outnumbered by the enemy. There were 300 soldiers, whereas the enemy had around 1000 and the Oda side still won because the enemy got overconfident and drank the night before the castle siege. The 300 soldiers ambushed them at the location the opposing side was located and killed the generals, which meant the opposing side had nobody to command them so they did not resist after the Oda soldiers assassinated the generals.
    I've also heard that Hideyoshi was also pretty meh, since he failed during the Japanese invasion of Korea and it became a military stalemate. Nobunaga actually cared about ashigaru footwork too (Ashigaru is the term for a peasant in Japanese) which supported Nobunaga's uprising. He also saved a Mozambican man from Portuguese slave trading. I'm talking about the story of Yasuke. He also let his daughter become a samurai, there were already a few female samurai at the time but it's still nice of Oda Nobunaga to do that type of thing.
    Oda was smart, he sent Christian Envoys to Europe for inspiration on tactics, and invented the Three Line Formation. The Line Formation was already invented in Europe, but not the three-line formation which I think is smart because Japan at the time was slacking behind on tactics and technology meaning clans would shit themselves whenever they'd witness strange tactical advantages or technology used against them. It's kinda like how the Mongolians used bombs against the Samurai, it changed Japan and they made deals with Portuguese traders.
    Hideyoshi has some pretty inspirational quotes, he may not have been as power-hungry as Nobunaga but he was also not as military active.

    Hideyoshi was not 'spooked' by losing his reinforcement. Hideyoshi was treated overly well by Nobunaga and constantly given big tasks. This made him unpopular to other vassals. So Hideyoshi requested reinforcements from Nobunaga so he could give him the credit for beating the Mori. He'd more or less already beat them.
    This also explains how he got a truce so easily. He'd more or less won, he was just seiging which takes a while. The Mori were totally happy with Hideyoshi just leaving rather than being defeated.
    This is partially why some believe he was working with Akechi. Akechi *did* hate Hideyoshi, because he was particularly snubbed by Nobunaga's favouritism, which is why the theory isn't do popular.
    Hideyoshi being a jackass is totally historically accurate tho.

    2:55 I really want to know what source you're using for this part of the narrative because that's not what the "common knowledge" story is like. New theories are being considerred and reviewed today as well, but we'll just focus on the "traditional narrative" first. The most commonly accepted story was that Hideyoshi backed Hidenobu (or, Sanboushi) from the start. A recent theory suggested a narrative that's the reverse, which was that Hideyoshi backed Hidenobu, but supported Nobukatsu to be the "temporary lord" until Hidenobu is of age.
    The Komaki-Nagakute battle is not Hideyoshi vs Ieyasu. It's Hideyoshi vs Nobukatsu. In fact, as the Oda was at the time still considered the ruling clan, this was viewed by some as "Hideyoshi is raising a coup d'etat against the Oda". Ieyasu was there as Nobukatsu's assist/ally.

      @@nemesis3587 the political system that Hideyoshi **directly** left behind was a council which included Ieyasu himself, and the council worked fairly well before Ieyasu initiated his schemes. Are you implying that Ieyasu himself was incompetent? Then what gave him right to overthrow the council? The only incentive he had was to become a dictator so that he wouldn’t have to reach an agreement with other council members. If you meant Hideyori, no, Hideyori appeared “incompetent” because he didn’t receive proper education since he was 7, mostly because of Ieyasu’s power grab. It’s not predetermined that he’d be “incompetent” if Ieyasu had properly fulfilled his legitimate role as a regent. It’s like telling a child “no wonder your parents hate you, you’re terrible” when the only reason the child had been “terrible” was because of terrible parenting.

    • @nemesis3587
      @nemesis3587 3 года назад

      @@fyncheniteO No, not Ieyasu, Hideyori. It is not predetermined but it is kinda obvivious. In the end he was a child if West side won the battle he was probably gonna became Mitsunari's puppet or Mori clan's. Like Ashigaka shoguns he would be a name only shogun.
      The system Ieyasu followed is Hideyoshi's politics, like no class change and another rules. Other than, Hideyoshi's regent system was a terrible idea from the start. He should have know better because of how he userped power from Oda clan himself. Expecting powerful figure like Ieyasu wait for his kid coming to age is naive idea. Other regents blamed Ieyasu but they were no better than him. Hideyoshi ust doomed his clan after he forced his former heir Hidetsugu commit suicide.

    • @fyncheniteO
      @fyncheniteO 3 года назад +1

      @@nemesis3587 still a shitty excuse which follows shoddy logic that “Ieyasu usurped Toyotomi because Hideyori *was going to be incompetent*” because the latter never happened and was but a self-fulfilling prophecy to terminate other possibilities. You’re saying as if “Hideyori becoming a puppet” was certain, but truth is *it never happened*. And knowing the competence of Terumoto and morals (and connections) of Mitsunari, it likely wouldn’t happen.
      Hideyoshi had nothing to learn from Oda because both the overlord and the heir had died and Nobunaga left no will, so that whatever the other successors or subordinates did, they didn’t conduct a breach of *anything* but some obscure “moral” obligations. Hideyoshi’s original regent system was worse, as he was stupid enough to designate Ieyasu as one of the two regents alongside with Maeda. Because Hideyoshi was a bad judge of character like that. The *current* regent system was vastly improved from basically handing Hideyori’s life to Ieyasu.
      The problem of Ieyasu was pretty much that he probably never did remotely “decent” things and he was overly zealot in his unflattering deeds. Even throughout the aftermaths of Nobunaga’s death he was the most savage: when others were debating and manoeuvring in a conference for the legitimacy of succession of the Oda clan, Ieyasu, as a “long-standing” and “loyal” ally of Oda, was scheming to blatantly seize land from Oda vassals and had (indirectly) driven one of them to death. And after Hideyoshi’s death he was the first to completely disregard an established will agreed by every regent. The time had been evolving and Ieyasu’s contemporaries had been adopting more civil, modernized methods and mindset by negotiating to settle a dispute, or abiding to “contracts” they had agreed on, and Ieyasu consistently had been stuck with old school thinkings of “schemes and military conquest above everything”. That outdated, uncivil mindset automatically makes Ieyasu an ineligible ruler of Japan. No wonder Edo period had delayed Japan’s modern reformations for forever, until the situation was truly desperate.
      I honestly don’t think any “modern” person should defend Ieyasu because his success was solely based on violations of what modernized, “enlightened” values stood for. But that’s just my opinion.
