+w4stedspace One pointer about the handbrake; it cant even hold my modified version of your rover unless its on a perfectly flat surface ... one must design some kind of landing gear based handbrake in order to stop any kind of wheeled vehicle moving, i even had this issue with a little remote recon drone i built ...
I havnt tried that, but i know from my own experiences that i cannot attach objects to wheels on my grids, i wonder if it would have any effect at all, seeing as the handbrake keeps the wheels at a dead stop and any vehicle just slides down hills (as far as ive seen at least)
"Welcome back guys, and I have another crazy design for you" *A tree flies by screen* OMG he has made a flying tree base! :p Pretty much sums up what went through my head in that intro >.
I'm glad I got to see this in production in the stream. It's a great concept; having a mobile base makes things so much easier especially in the event that you want to keep your options open until you find 'that perfect spot' for a more permanent structure.
Great rover base. It reminds me (visibly) of my first planetary survival ship that I crashed due to underestimating gravity vs. atmospheric thrusters. Then I lifted it with pistons and attached wheels to it so I could move it closer to water.
I was watching as this behemoth was designed by committee and I am super impressed by the way this vehicle moves over the terrain. I have never flown or driven anyone else's designs but this one I may have to make an exception for. I am pretty sure I could make another one but not a better one.
Very cool! I would like to see it with a bit of a paint job, but I do really like the design, and I think it stands on its own even monochrome. I absolutely love how smoothly the landing gear-feet fit in when rotated up.
+Katniss Crofter You know how crap I am with colour schemes.. heh :) I was pretty happy with the all-grey look so I avoided the inveitable ruining by me tryin to paint it basically.. I was pretty pleased with the landing gear though, as you say, sits really nice! Cheers kat!
The Windows, the scale of the thing, somehow I see a man made turret on the top there, you could do it! Fantastic! I love it! Wow im going to go play with it. Nicely done!
Very nice design. I learned something new with the connectors. Only suggestion i would make is for vehicle load up in the back would be to face a landing gear out the left or right side of the buggy instead of the bottom to hold it in the back or possible build a block to line up with when you come up the ramp and place on the back just so it does not mess with clearance or add a piston or rotor. Thanks for the inspiration getting ready to start a survival run on a server with a few people.
You should look into making little bumpers infront of the lead wheels to plow over trees before they get to the wheel base, probably about in line with that armor slope under the spot lamp so you wouldn't really loose much ground clearance before the wheel bases bottom out
Living in a region full of trees, I had to make my own way so I placed a line of armor blocks at the front of my mobile base. It works like a charm, taking no damage but trees offer resistance and can change the direction of your ship when moving, to counter this, I try to hit them at the center of my armor.
That is a great design.... gyro is definitely a must for any rover. (I meant to add that as a suggestion to your small survival rover... saved my butt a couple of times with my light rover.)
I really dig this design. I myself, have not had much luck creating any big Crawler/Rovers in survival yet...even small ones tend to fly up in the air like kites made of paper. Something that has to get fixed, because right now Rovers just seem broken. Even with your design, you had to really space the wheels out *ridiculously* wide to create some stability. Maybe they could fix it by added some sort of negative gravity generator to air ships - so having a flying mobile base is more practical. Who knows...either way, LOVELY design. The glass in the front is especially cool.
i read that landing gear can break trees without taking damage (haven't actually tested this yet myself). That having been said, and if it is in fact true, you may want to try and make "bumpers" in from of the front wheels to break any trees by placing a few landing gear that point out from the front wheel struts to break any trees that may jump in front of your vehicle.
better than my attempts at a mobile base. 1st one with legs was slow, and had some buggy rotors, and the other on wheels was constantly crushing its wheels under its own weight
Pretty sure why your vehicles are sliding (mine do to) is because of friction. If you have anything aside from 100% friction on tires, they'll probably slide on very minor slopes or heavy slopes. I do use anchors to hold my bases down too though.
+w4stedspace Here are some personal findings on wheels setup that I find useful and you haven't mentioned it yet. Place power increase and decrease into your action bar so you can quickly adjust it accordingly to the situation. Normally I have the power set to 10%, but when I go uphill it can be increased and then you don't need those thrusters and you save power. It works like a gas pedal in a car. Make the rear wheels have slightly more friction than the front ones. It helps to hold direction the vehicle moves and helps against skidding. But I don't think heavier vehicles like this one need this. Your vehicle is exactly what I needed, thanks for making it! Hopefully I get an opportunity to try it out soon.
+Shieldmate You do still need the thrusters, I actually mention in the video that the power and friction settings are not sufficiently strong to move it up steeper hills, hence resorting to thrusters, a neccesary byproduct of how much this weighs. I do talk about using power & friction settings in the exporation rover vid, but for this one all they really do is make the wheels behave very oddly. Having it on the bar isn't a bad idea though, although I'd use the MoveIt script to mean that I had 2 power settings rather than use +/- as those aren't very precise. Cheers!
+w4stedspace What I experienced it the more friction you give your craft, the better the handbrake holds, you should check it out, I usually have the wheels in a group with the friction up/down settings in my hotbar
awesome base mate, one thing i might suggest is to have a jack system for that inevitable moment when you rip a wheel off, because when that happens the game wont place the wheel because it will be too low. just make sure to balance the pistons for the jacks or you'll end up with a vertical base.
After messing around with the handbrake, i learned that it only applies a break to 1 wheel, hence vehicles will easily slide on slopes regardless of wheel configuration.
you could do a piston with a connector on the bottem of the craft, lowering a drone on weals. or multiple piston's with fighter-cars. have them drop down from the bottem, you enter from the deck.
Just need to add an angled tree plough or frontal bars to it. Push all those pesky trees out the way. I'm really curious whether or how well that would work.
maybe slap some thrusters on the arms near the axle bases(forward and backward perhaps. with larger ones on the carriage for those flyby moments. perhaps locking the foot breaks to the body ( if possible), and maybe some extra places for drones..... or weaponry.... landing gear perhaps to lock drones or some such in place.
+EberKain You can loose maybe 2 of them, inside or outside, but if you loose more it starts to become a fair bit more bouncy and looses some grip.. drivable, but not as smooth by a long shot!
I'd love to see a thruster that functions in similar function as wheels. Basically very powerful, lower energy requirement, but has a massive falloff in thruster output along the gravity gradient, even 200x. Instead of crapping out at 8km, it should start struggling at maybe 40m. Wheels just take too much calculation to interface with a surface in a voxel world.
The handbrake problem is really annoying, since even really light vehicles still roll away, but I did want to point out that being able to drive forward and backward doesn't mean anything regarding the brakes. When you drive the MPB forward or backwards, you're using the power and torque of the electrical engines attached to the wheels (or however SE does it) to turn them; the handbrake (unless it's something exotic) is trying to use pure friction. Still doesn't make sense, but... *shrugs*
Have you had a chance to try this vehicle on planets ? My experiments with various rovers, somewhat similar with the small one you had parked inside, ended up in disaster. Wheels exploding, entire vehicle imploding, nothing seem to work right on the surface of the planets. Is this big crawler more stable ?
Have you thought about connecting the axles on each leg with a rotor so the pairs of wheels are hinged for better grip on rough terrain? Would like to see if that would even work!
So when you go to the workshop to download it, does that mean I'll always have the blueprint so if i wanted to create a copy of this on a server I could?
Oh wow w4sted, your channel's really starting to pick up the subscribers. Last time I checked you had 19,000 and I believe that was just a couple months ago. Keep up the great work, we're enjoying it!
+AnomalyTea You need to use heavy armour or blast doors to make it strong enough and that really messes up the weight balance and the ground clearance.. having the wheels be the first thing to connect with a hill is really helpful! Did try that but couldn't really make something that worked practically.
This one is gorgeous! It's great seeing you iterate over your ridiculous designs into ridiculously practical ones. Throw pasta at the planet and see what the sabroids eat, and all that, eh? :D
While this is neat, and I plan on driving it around a bit, can we get something like this make for survival, without all the extra non-projector friendly grids? Or with programmed projectors already integrated into the base blueprint?
So, if its a mobile base it should have landing platform too if it does not make it too heavy or would it possible to make land train out of several mobile bases?
Awesome vehicle! Question: on the vehicle with remote control, how are you able to change the 3rd person viewing angle? I can't get it to change at all with the mouse.
Heh... Would be a nice "quality of life" addition if somehow, an auto-leveling system was added via pistons and such... I couldn't help but notice that the cabin was slightly tilted during the tour. XD Thing is, idk if one can get gravity data from any blocks to perform the auto-stabilization...
love this design so far had alot of fun playing with it it is surprisingly sturdy i did have a question though i was wondering if you had played around to see how much it can carry weight wise im using this in my solo survival and im not sure how much weight i can safely pack on before heading back to back for a drop at my main base
+TalesOfWar Fatboys don't use drones though. It could have a projector factory in the back, a connector on top (air repair and refuel), gatling guns on the sides (hellfury guns) and use battleship cannons from the worshop.
+TalesOfWar As much as I would love to, I'm afriad I dont really have the time invest in it, plus my designs are rather horrible. hopefully I'll get to make it someday but I dont see it any time soon.
I have to say that your video has some good content +w4stedspace and even better explanation, for example the parameters for the wheels... but what really concerns me the most is, how do you design these crafts or how do you design them to be useful and practical?
+Venom 415 You do have to be super careful :) Sometimes it'll only update your changes when you move the wheels which normally results in a sudden massive change in ride height, which of course sends you flying :)
How do you keep your ground vehicles from falling through the ground into inner space? It seems to happen in specific parts of a planet's surface. In creative I can afford to sacrifice vehicles to predicting the invisible mail slot canyon to oblivion or square area. It seems to be a bug in the games voxol interpretation. It's documented in the Keen Software forums as a bug they are still trying to smash. In the mean time I build more flying vehicles in survival as they never get voxol canyon trapped.
Keen might nerf that connector through glass thing, btw. In real life, they certainly would be able to connect like that, but not pass items, assuming they lock magnetically.
Well.. i decided to forgo wheels alltogether on planets. Light vehicles boucne around like crazy, heavy vehicles seem to be TOO heavy for the suspension to carry and/or propel them... small vehicles get hindered by the super-rugged hillsides quickly, big vehicles are, again, too heavy to get over them or flip... I wish Keen decided to rebalance their wheel mechanics, as making a functionally and reasonable rover is close to impossible. Tried something with drills - nope, too heavy. Tried something without anything just to get around - nope, too light. Still like that MPB design. Maybe crazy oversized vehicles are the way to go :/
+Selmokk From my experience the crazy oversized are the only ones that really start to handle like you expect.. You can kinda bodge together lighter vehicles but they end up SOOO bouncy at times it can't be pretty ridiculous.
yeah, i guess i'll build a space rocket, get to the asteroid mining and come back with a lot of materials to build supersize ^^ trying to start survival with small ground vehicles doesn't work.
+w4stedspace It's fun seeing how the handling changes as you load and unload the things. I made a biggish small ship based cargo hauler and it bounces around like mad until you load it up with a million plus kg of cargo, then it handles as you'd expect a truck of its size to handle. Saying that I just ended up building a lifter ship with a crap load of upward thrust that lets me carry 2 "trailers" (they have no controls, they're literally a cargo container with landing gears and connectors) that seem to be pretty effective for moving things around quickly.
I did a similar thing. Started with a small wheeled vehicle and then got rid of the wheels and put atmospheric engines on it instead. Much happier. Wheels are broke for me on anything heavy.
It gets even worse when it's a vehicle that has to carry a LOT of weight. if you tune the suspension for the weight while tis empty, you'll most likely flip it on the first tiny bump. if you don't, retuning it with all the weight in has a 85% chance of making it explode.
why dont you safety lock the wheels and suspension instead of using the non-functioning handbrake? Hell you can even use it while moving to stop almost instantly if replacing the front axle is cheaper than fixing whatever youre fixing to hit (front axle vs front half of the rover)
I really don't like how handbrakes can't hold their vehicle in place. Kindof a necessitiy when you're on a planet, the slightest bump has it rolling off in a random direction.
+8eewee aye is kinda anoying.. it either seems the vehicle is so light the wheels just slip, or so heavy the handbrake doesn't hold.. yet to find a happy mediium aside from locking the damn thing down whenever I stop! :)
I hope they will fix the wheels soon, I can't build a proper buggy because its too light, I can really only build massive vehicules. And they added Planets ffs, they should really balance them.
Jolly Joel Can you set the speed and route? Can you also program something like if the speed drops bellow 10 Km/h, engage thrusters? I haven't played the game in a while and I assume you can't so that'd be an advantage of using a programming block.
Looks very functional although I worry for it's power usage, it only has, like 4 solar panels? And I know it has reactors but there's not a whole lot of Uranium on earth, at least not from my experience, other than that, great design!
Gotta apologise for the number of times I call something 'ridiculous' in this.. it's a bit, well, ridiculous :P ...
Sorry!
11:53 the new SE loading icon XD
+w4stedspace that tree at the start doe

it seems from a distance that it's not that big but when you walked on foot up to it it seemed massive Good Job on the build
"Welcome back guys, and I have another crazy design for you" *A tree flies by screen* OMG he has made a flying tree base! :p

+Stewart Bates lol, no... but that does give me an idea!
ooo... Can't wait to see what! >.
+w4stedspace A weapon that shoots trees at your enemeys wheels maybe?

that tree went flying... Great Build W4sted.
great design! i never thought of putting two wheels on each "leg", thanks for the inspiration!
I put 4 wheels on 1 leg. I'm adding 3 rotors to each leg now 😬

i just want to rip the "legs" off, attach thrusters to it and through it into space, i think it would look pretty nice if u cut it right.

OMG it is so awesome! Btw, you could do a follow up video with vehicles from your competition to see how they perform on actual planet.
I think you can assume that connector through glass will be fixed eventually. It's obviously a bug, not intended.
Just need to add an angled tree plough or frontal bars to it. Push all those pesky trees out the way. I'm really curious whether or how well that would work.
Love this design, congratulation! I hope one day to use this for my Europa class ship!
i wish connectors went back to their old ways where there was no power adjustment and they held everything golidly
maybe slap some thrusters on the arms near the axle bases(forward and backward perhaps. with larger ones on the carriage for those flyby moments. perhaps locking the foot breaks to the body ( if possible), and maybe some extra places for drones..... or weaponry.... landing gear perhaps to lock drones or some such in place.
i saw you making this in the stream but dint see it finished but final looks VERY cool :)
Totally inspiring. How does it handle without the middle wheels?
+EberKain You can loose maybe 2 of them, inside or outside, but if you loose more it starts to become a fair bit more bouncy and looses some grip.. drivable, but not as smooth by a long shot!

Oh wow w4sted, your channel's really starting to pick up the subscribers. Last time I checked you had 19,000 and I believe that was just a couple months ago. Keep up the great work, we're enjoying it!
+Zach Watson Thanks dude! Going really well atm!
Holy shit, you've done a lot in the finished project from when I stopped watching. :D Looks really awesome!
i like the design but it would not be so practical on other planets with no/toxic atmosphere. maybe a mk2(3) thats airtight?
I really like this design.
I'm building something similar but a lot heavier and it barely moves so this was pretty helpful.
I know it sounds a bit too simple, but would adding a bumper solve the tree problem?
+AnomalyTea You need to use heavy armour or blast doors to make it strong enough and that really messes up the weight balance and the ground clearance.. having the wheels be the first thing to connect with a hill is really helpful! +Gamma Ray Do it! Have it make drones or something as it goes.
+TalesOfWar Fatboys don't use drones though. It could have a projector factory in the back, a connector on top (air repair and refuel), gatling guns on the sides (hellfury guns) and use battleship cannons from the worshop.

It gets even worse when it's a vehicle that has to carry a LOT of weight. if you tune the suspension for the weight while tis empty, you'll most likely flip it on the first tiny bump. if you don't, retuning it with all the weight in has a 85% chance of making it explode.
wow at the very end when your spinning upside down the wheel wasn't even connected but was still spinning with the ship...
Do you have any orbital bomberdment weapon designs in the making?
+439sparky1 Of course :) 1 is pretty much done and I started a new one this evening! Inc next week!
Impressive ship W4sted! i personally prefer to build flying bases my self but thats just me :D
I kinda wish there was a way to ditch the wheels and go off out of atmosphere (obviously after some oxygen sealing modifications)
+w4stedspace I was wondering if you could make some more hidden weapons like you did with your challenge video. Maybe using mods.
try adding wings? oh boy what an idea.
why dont you safety lock the wheels and suspension instead of using the non-functioning handbrake?
why no rotors where the wheels attach to the legs?
I hope they will fix the wheels soon, I can't build a proper buggy because its too light, I can really only build massive vehicules. And they added Planets ffs, they should really balance them.
I've always wondered, with programming blocks, can you program a driving computer that can drive you to a GPS destination?
+Hendlton The Remote Control block already has that built into it.
Jolly Joel Can you set the speed and route? Can you also program something like if the speed drops bellow 10 Km/h, engage thrusters? I haven't played the game in a while and I assume you can't so that'd be an advantage of using a programming block.
Hendlton Definitely need a programmable block for that. There are other features to Autopilot too.
Is it possible to make a tree clearing vehicle? I'm trying to build a long road.
you should build a mobile base in your survival series
+Ryan Kennerk That would take weeks to complete
That spider was cool
~~🙂♾😎
not only am I a sub.. I liked the vid AND added this mobile base to my library :D
a hill can be as tall as a mountain but the key difference is that a mountain has snow on it and a hill does not
Looks very functional although I worry for it's power usage, it only has, like 4 solar panels? And I know it has reactors but there's not a whole lot of Uranium on earth, at least not from my experience, other than that, great design!
Wait it doesn't have reactors does it?
i would like to see a base raid with this monster!
or a cool mgs like battle with the end goal beon destryoing the thing control panels
What do all the wheel options do?
that was really cool
im impressed. way out of my understanding of the game so great impression
During the stream I was promised personally barrel rolls! WHERE ARE THEY!?!?!?
Maybe a ramp in front of the wheels to smash the trees.
that is an epic creation O.o
so why you didn't use bumper ?! )))))
They look awesome. Shame rotors are not multiplayer friendly.
use it for group survival series with shack and morph
how do you delete whole entities like that? 1:10
+Baconlovar Ctrl-X
Thanks :D
love ur vids btw
Can you make it pressurized?
If you can't get on the roof, how do you repair stuff then?
+yokmp1 You can get up there up the arms easy enough, there just isn't a dedicated elevator or anything.
and attach a planetary death lotus to it
starting off with a flying tree
