    I loved the explanation from the novels that the Breen are a collection of different species. One had a snout, another was non corporeal, one liked the cold, etc. And the suits are deliberately made to obscure the individual forms as their way to have a sort of forced total equality by removing individual features. You can’t tell which species they are, age, gender, could make everyone the same height if you wanted. The synthetic universal voice means you can’t tell language and accents. You would only reveal your true self to your immediate family and closest friends. So maybe the species with the snout left the Breen Confederacy and this is still just one of many possible Breen appearances.

    11:30 I think that it could be useful to think of this in the same way as how we were presented with "proto-Vulcans" in Who Watches the Watchers. Like not really Vulcans but potentially developing down the same road. In that same way maybe we can think of the Breen as "proto-Changelings" developing towards losing their solid forms. This would also explain why the Breen were not only allies of the Dominion during DS9, but some individuals like Thot Pran quickly became the most trusted confidants of the Female Changeling near the end of the Dominion War. Unlike other "solids", they represent a people moving towards the Changeling ideal of "advancement".

    Kudos to Sam for saying "whelmed" (it is rarely said) and I think the point some have made about the Founders being a bit less dickish to the Breen is a valid one if they are semi-solid they might see them as like a species about to end up like they are.. so "more evolved" than a Cardassian.

    in my headcanon, I always suspected the Breen had a semisolid/viscous natural state requiring extremely low temperatures and pressure outside of their native environment. Thus, their bodies would basically boil over and evaporate when their environmental suits are breached/punctured. That was my internal explanation of why dead Breen didn't leave any remains, just empty suits.

  • @williamjay87
    @williamjay87 5 месяцев назад

    I never expected the explanation from the novels to be used for canon. Still a bit of a shame that it wasn't used though. These new Breen are fine. I'm glad they have a more alien aspect to them with the gelatinous bodies, but it doesn't feel like it's enough? Don't love it, but I definitely do not hate it.

    If they have always been like this that would mean that this race has been evolving long before humanity was digging berries out of trees. Or maybe their world is so alien and cold this is how they developed. I feel like it would be like if humans were to evolve on Titan

    fights in the penultimate episode really make me wonder if the answer just came down to whatever was easiest for the suit performers, since we know from BTS stuff that the old breen helmets were a nightmare to wear and frequently caused accidents on set.

  • @FabiusPolis

    There was a reason why DS9 kept the Breen a mysterious species. It made them intresting, really alien and not easy to grasp. STD destroyed that within seconds, there are Shreks in Space, i see. Its mentioned many times that the Breen need to wear their suits for environmental reasons, but this is forgotten like the traits of Orion women in STD. So humans can breath normally on their ships, the Breen can breath normally without suits on nitrogen-oxygen atmospheres. They wear the suits to keep them in their gellatine form what should be the other way around when you think about it, cooling should make them solid. I regret that i saw this episode, as many others of STD.

      To be fair, they could have meant “if we remove the matter-antimatter detonator then replace it with just antimatter”
      Also we don’t even know if photon torpedos in the 32nd century still use a standard matter antimatter reaction, it could be a whole thing like quantum torpedos where there’s more involved with the tech and calling the explosive part of the torpedo the “charge” just makes it simpler for dialogue.
