    Its pronounced "Tai-Fon" not Typhoon", the name comes from Greek mythology, a giant with snake like features.

      While the word Typhoon does indeed originate from Typhon, they definitely are pronounced quite differently.
      Also Typhon is more than just snakes, he's a Titan powerful enough to challenge Zeus himself, and the father of Cerberus and Hydra, to name a few other beasties.

    The Typhon class was designed as a FOB/CARRIER/class. In the consol game it was commanded by Commander Worf it came with an experimental holographic cloak. (reason for the large emitters) Which was effective against long range scans when in hiding. With a max warp of four due to it being staging ship it was transported by ships with higher warp capacity. Its secondary function was Fortress mode in which this state it was unable to launch or dock fighters. In this mode all power was diverted to shields an weapons making it a fortress. The bridge was a CNC section. There was no bridge deck. the bottom hangers were rapid fighter launchers to the standard fighter side bays. It was designed to work with fortress mode for maximum deployment of fighters. On a side note, it was also able deploy covert ops teams. Use a variety of fighters.

  • @boeubanks7507
    @boeubanks7507 19 дней назад +10

    The escape pod placement makes sense if you consider that the entire center section would have to be open space to accommodate fighter launch, retrieval, movement, rearming, repair, etc. Also, if this has a fortress mode where it collapses down to maximize defense capability, it would have to have an open center.

    I'm a big fan of the Typhon. Picked it up in STO a couple of days ago and I absolutely love it. As far as design goes, I think it fits the design language of the time. If we look at the Defiant, we can surmise that the Typhon may have originated as a post-Wolf359 anti-Borg force multiplier. Where the Defiant is an "escort," the Typhon is an "escort carrier." Theoretically, it can also serve as an evacuation platform dependent on how much internal volume there is.

  • @garypalmer997

    I think the reason it has giant transporter emitters is for emergency beem outs of their fighter pilots

    I love the idea of a starfighter carrier in the Star Trek universe. Always been a fan of fighters in general, so having a dedicated carrier makes sense. I know the Akira is supposed to be carrier-like, but at least this one has the specific purpose. I've also always wanted to see a true battleship...something like this design that is heavily shielded and armored, with little scientific stuff, so it can go into the heart of a battle and unleash mass amounts of pulse phaser fire, torpedoes, and electronic countermeasures.

  • @terranempire2
    @terranempire2 19 дней назад +9

    Given what we see in DS9 in both the short Klingon conflict and the Dominion war I think the Typhon would serve as a planetary assault ship. The fighters could do CAS, the large Shuttle bays could also launch landing shuttles. The large transporters could beam down ground troops.

  • @unknown9126
    @unknown9126 19 дней назад +9

    Great to see the Typhon again.
    For me, any fighter in Star Trek would need really good ECM, to avoid being immediately locked on by enemy weapons. You would probably need dedicated heavier craft/bomber with better shielding and weapons against capital ships vs a multipurpose craft. The latter would go after the bombers and smaller starships. Even then, any bomber would probably be firing torpedoes from longer ranges like our cruise missiles now to keep themselves from being intercepted/shot down.

    • @andrewkingham
      @andrewkingham 19 дней назад +4

      Yeah, it always seemed to me that fighters could easily work in Trek, assuming that their technology was advanced enough to avoid being easily targeted (and I mean, why not?). Purpose-built, small, highly manouverable and with excellent ECM, with potent micro-photons etc. The perfect harasser and scout craft. Seems to be the case, when you watch how they're deployed in DS9.

    6:03 Yes, the Valkyries had warp engines. At the start of multiple missions, you can be seen warping to the site of the mission in a nearby star system, and during play, they act as a generic speed boost (and you can even warp backwards!).

    Personally I could see Fighters used in Anti-pirate work in Trek as those would have for the most part converted freighters or shuttlecrafts in their arsenal not top of the line warships, so you could have carrier or 2 Escorting freighters thru an area known to have pirate ambushes instead of sending something like Galaxy, Sovereign or even a Defiant.

    It's funny. This ship actually quite small, being only slightly larger than the Defiant, but smaller than Voyager. And yet, they talk about it like it's a big chunk of Tritanium and bad choices.
    I quite like the ship, it's different from the other full carriers, including my beloved Aspero(which I mistakenly thought had an off center bridge tower when I got it) in that it is a full TURRET boat having a custom console that only fits this ship(because it also enables Fortress Mode) that negates the damage reduction on turrets for being a 360° weapon. She's a monster even with bad gear.

    You see cap ships missing other cap ships all the time. Not beyond the stretch of imagination that hitting small hyper maneuverable fighters is really difficult. And it would be easy for the Federation to develop drone fighters, that is basically an engine and a phaser array.

    I think the lack of escape pod hatches can be explained by the ship being heavily armored. It is supposed to be designed for heavy combat. Also another heavily armored ship, the Defiant, had its escape pods hidden behind hidden hatches in the exterior hull so possibly the Typhon does something similar.

    15:36 One of my many criticisms of the Intrepid’s unnecessary moving nacelles. When it’s at warp, the nacelles are up and the bussard collectors are behind the saucer section. Well done (sarcasm)!

  • @balrighty3523
    @balrighty3523 18 дней назад

    21:01 Maybe they’re side escape pods (or escape pod stacks). You wouldn’t see such on thing on most Federation ships where the hull sections are relatively flat (and so the escape pods are only above or below), but on a ship this thick, the sides become valid areas to tuck them away.

  • @bcluett1697
    @bcluett1697 18 дней назад

    Right with you Cpt Foley I was hoping when I saw it that the nacelles only tuck at warp or something, like an Aqarius. I had no idea about this ship. I saw it in Earth orbit at Spacedock and uttered "what in the hell is that?" lol. The thing on the bottom almost looks like a seperate ship with a capsule forward hull. Like a freighter docked to it. The nose on the ship reminds me of the APU cruiser. The whole vibe is like a Expanse ship. It's very interesting.

    Something I wonder about the design that I didn't realize until I saw that read 3/4 view: The red bits at the front of the warp nacelles are Bussard collectors; they pull in ambient hydrogen for the M/A reaction. They're not going to collect a whole lot tucked into the hull like that. :P

    Regarding the idea of fighters in Trek. I've always regarded them as best for things like light patrol or a scout, sniper, and ambush role.
    I felt it needed more weapons too. Especially point defense. Like what we saw when DS9 got it's upgrades. Maybe a lot more defense. Which leads me to how I never like the idea that the Enterprise just dropped it off and left. Carriers should have escort craft.
    I like the idea of stacked internal escape pods. It would solve the problem of people scrambling to the outer areas of the ship.
    This ship always felt like the prototype pushed into service kind. Like "Hey we were testing ideas because of (insert threat). But this new problem showed up. So put this to good use."

    Simple put, I have some counter thoughts, and I mean this in a fun manner; not sweaty nerd hammering on a keyboard manner. XD
    Some things to consider, a Carrier in Star trek I could see it being used more in ground combat operations. (think airstrikes.) As they wouldn't have a need for massive amounts of ships around the planet. Fighter could provide the limited amount of support a ground unit would need verses the highly destructive weapons a Starship would have. (You wouldn't need a orbital strike from a starship to deal with a small entrenchment, but a Micro torpedo or a couple pulse phaser blasts from a fighter in the combat zone would clear it up nicely.)
    And as for the lack of escape pods, they could be pulling off a shuttles as the primary means of escape. As often seen getting out of a combat zone is often shown to be devastating to pods survivability. The pods could be there as a secondary method to escape in case of hull breaches preventing people from getting to the hangar bays. As for the concern about crews not having enough pilots, it could be a basic rule where a majority of the crew could have some limited pilot training. Not every pilot has worn a yellow (TOS) or Red uniform. (TMP onwards.) How often have we seen Georgi or the such take a shuttle out on their own. We aren't asking them to provide high even combat maneuvers, but get out of the bay and warp out.
    Anyways, I'll stop rambling, I hope thing provided some food for thought.

  • @dswynne
    @dswynne 18 дней назад

    A vessel of this size and type would be more suited as a mobile base and heavy resupply vessel. Beyond that, it could easily host Maquis and Bajoran vessels, which are typically the size of large shuttles, not to mention serving a shuttle repair platform, if not a mobile starship repair platform. As an aside, a "fighter" class in STAR TREK wouldn't be the same as a "fighter" from, let's say, STAR WARS. In fact, I would think that a fighter class from the movie THE LAST STAR FIGHTER is more appropriate in a STAR TREK environment.

  • @ffnbbq
    @ffnbbq 18 дней назад

    Honestly, fighter craft engaging ships and other small craft look cool, and that's really all the justifaction Star Trek needs to have fighter craft.
    As for tactical logic, look at how well clunky Maquis raiders did against Galor class ships - the Cardassians didn't defeat them until the Dominion arrived with overwhelming force.

  • @Jasonak907
    @Jasonak907 19 дней назад

    There wouldn't be a lot more pilots than fighters. Yes pilots would be split into shifts, but if all fighters would be needed, pilots would have to work off shift. And that would be part of their training and expectation of the job if the need arises.

    so 2 things, first once you said it I couldn't unsee it, the phasers do look like solo emitters, what if those odd hexagon things could be solo emitters all over the ship, instead of having long arrays they just have the solo emitters splattered all over for point defense? and second, i always liked the idea of fighters in trek, with capital ships, even the defiant, we always se them follow attack patterns, fighters wouldn't have to do anything of the sort, and the freedom they have to completely fight in 3d space would, or should, make them harder to hit. yes ships have auto targeting systems, but they would have to give lead, and with inertial dampers pilots would be able to make impossible turns and flight capabilities would be off the charts

  • @larrykelbaughjr.1831
    @larrykelbaughjr.1831 18 дней назад +1

    Honestly, for a "carrier", I would think it's very lacking in firepower! The corners & edges would give the ship the best vantage points for phaser array strips, or just single phasers (in pairs, side-by-side, alternating fire, higher rof)! If they had 2 pairs of torpedoe launchers on opposite sides of the ship's bow, then you'd have good angles for spreading out your firepower! & do the same for the rear of the ship as well! Stacking escape pods would take up alot of room, especially if they are high capacity escape pods! & having then next to your impulse engines (bottom view) isn't a good idea! Since engines are usually targeted, even in Star Trek! The fighter 'launchers' on the bottom, I think would be better if they were angled more forward, towards the battle! However, they should be more protected as they are now! Armor them!! Too exposed to enemy fire! The bottom fighter launchers don't make sense! How do they load them? Elevators...somehow? Tractor beam emitters? Same can be said about the internal ones above!

Taking lots of time repairing damaged, & heavily damaged fighters (automation?)! A ton of supplies dedicated just for fighter operations, micro-torpedos(assuming micro-torpedo launchers on fighters, would be just awesome)(highway to the danger zone intensifying), armor & shields(required), specifically designed impulse engine(s), & possibly more! Not mentioning fighter pilots, their accommodations, & their location to the fighter bay(s) (fast response time)! Pulse phaser gun(s)(just thought of that)?

    I started out okay with fighters in Trek, but have come around to thinking that fighters don't really belong in Star Trek outside of desperate circumstances. Fighters in Star Trek would be more like Defiants, B'rels, and Jem'Hadar fighters.
    I really hope that BSG looking shape on the underside was deliberate as a nod to the influence of that series.

    What would a starship look like if Uss Prometheus and uss voyager are combined in one starship without multi vector assault mode. Thoughts?

    With the escape pods the ship might not need as many because the fighters and shuttles crews might not need to get to pods because of the ship is under attack chanses are fighters are already launched and flight crews would already be in the bays to get to shuttles or runabouts

    With the fighter bay the way it looks. I can see those bays more as mega torpedoe bays. And the fact this ship has a fortress mode. I think that would work better imo.

    If MACO had survived into the 24th-century I'd see the Typhon & it's fighters assigned to them, a military arm of the Federation. It's definitely a unique design, but damn its a brick. The one big downside to this design, the bussards are chocked off.

    Why not including shoots from the PS1 Cutscenes where you can see this thing hanging on the underside from the E to get a feeling of the size. Thing wasnt that big at all, very compact design

    Correct me if I am wrong, but the red part at the front of an engine nacelle is described as a bussard collector.
    On the normal earth ship configuration, it makes sense that the deflector Shields redirects the matter to those collectors! But what on earth makes a bussard collector buried so deep into a ship.
    For me, all those fanboys simply put things together without any technical knowledge at all. Not even the star trek pseudo knowledge...
