Great video! I remember doing this on the full flight AS350 simulator after we were done with the day's training. That pad is at 1250 feet, and we put in a little wind, and it's a hand full. And taking off, was just like the video. Whooooaaaa! Thanks for sharing.
What are the maximum wind speeds aloft where you are forbidden to land on a roof top helo pad? One little mistake/malfunction, and it would he a horrible fall to the ground.
Los Angeles had a regulation that was only recently abolished that buildings over a certain height had to have a helipad for evacuation purposes in the event of fire. They recently looked at the regulation and determined that because evacuation by helicopter would be limited to so few people at a time and very slow, it would be better to focus on developing fireproof elevators and stairwells. Now new skyscrapers in LA don’t have to have flat tops anymore.
@@JOHNSMITH-dc6lr For those that don't know. From New York Times: "The worst helicopter accident in the New York area occurred at the heliport on top of the Pan Am Building in midtown Manhattan on May 16, 1977. Five persons - four on the roof and a pedestrian on the street 59 stories below - were killed when a New York Airways helicopter keeled over on a broken landing gear, snapping off a rotor blade that flew through the air and slashed the victims."
@Helifliegerdotcom Makes sense.... sorta. =) We all know the subsonic harmonics, and pressure vibrations could be -- at the very least -- felt, some 5+ floors down. I mean... it's a 60's era, two-bladed main-rotor, Jetranger! Not exactly "noise considerate"! =) Besides -- if it involves a helicopter, and pissing off "non-rotorhead" people... like Sam Adam's always says "always a good decision!"
A landing? You mean an approach. That looks like skids did not touch. Cannot land here unless you have expressed permission from the owners of building.
In the Czech Republic it is not possible to land with one engine helicopter on this type of helipad. This machine is unable to proceed with normal landing, when the engine fails. I am afraid always when I must fly across a big city:)) IP
24 years ago when I did my commercial license in Los Angeles, we did the approches and almost land over this same building and other buildings, doing hovering at 3 feet above the platform, flying R22's....This was a part of the training...
Can someone explain to me why banks have these things? Seems like it would be more appropriate for emergency rooms, why broadcast to everyone that your bank might have an emergency at any moment? lol
Some helicopters have ranges of up to 400 miles or more. That's far enough to take you into nearby cities or even states. Pretty useful if you're a top level exec in a hurry to topple the competition or buy out a few politicians.
LA had a requirement for every building over a certain height to have a helipad for FD access / rescue. Also, banks in LA used to use helicopters to fly checks to the airports, avoiding traffic - not sure if they do anymore though...
Only in California really, Los Angeles has large rectangle flat top buildings but most of New York’s larger buildings are tipped and pointy because they don’t require pads
Gta in real life
Not even a damn ATM up there - crap customer service.
That is so cool! That is one of my favorite skyscrapers in all of the world!

I only have 112 helicopter hours. Are pinnacle landings like that when you first learn them? Or are they always treated with a bit of fear/respect?
out of curiosity - how many hours do you have now, after 9 years? greetings
@@tahilix 1,926 helicopter hours & 265 airplane hours.
I got 1,484 turbine helicopter hours flying a Hughes 500C from tuna boats for 2 1/2 years.

How come every skyscraper in the city of Los Angeles have helicopter pads and the rest of the skyscrapers in the country don't?

NYC pad landings were prohibited in the 70s due to the pan am building incident
