I was asked to describe turkey hunting in as few words as possible. My answer: turkey hunting is the most fun you will ever have getting mad as hell in your life. Lol!
The first time you Yelp and he doesn't reply. It means he's on the way. So sit tight. The gobbler knows the exact location your call is coming from. It can take up to an hour sometimes, but it works.

I just started hunting turkeys seriously about 3 years ago and I’ve learned so much about it from watching your videos! You are one of the best, my friend!
I swear turkeys can be gay. I had a group of four toms that would answer but wouldn’t budge two years in a row. Same birds I’m sure. Buddy of mine has had exact same experience. Would love some advice on that situation. Not the gay birds of course!
Pressure from predators will shut em down. Here when birds first appeared, more vocal. Now , very little gobbling etc. It’s not hunting pressure because there’s only myself and one other that even hunts em. Coyotes, which we have taken several out, keep em a tad quieter.
I like to use ground blind with decoy's around me, call some while they are in roost, then if you stay still and quiet after they leave roost sometimes they come in to investigate.
Man I started turkey hunting by myself 2 years ago and your absolutely right...... I couldn't tell you how Manu times I've over called turkey's...... what I do is get a few responses and then I'll be silent for fifteen or 20 mins , they can't resist the silent treatment haha
I tried a method I read about on a hung up bird. There were several birds (ended up being Jake's) hung up about 100 yards. We couldn't see them so I slowly moved closer and called. Then moved closer again and called. When I got as close as comfortable, I turned back and worked back to where I started and called. Before I knew it, all the jakes were at a full run coming at me. Have you ever tired this method with any success ?
Good video, but you could’ve touched on two people hunting and having one Hunter walk straight away in line where the turkey is and the hunter is located and start calling. Gobblers can’t handle it, it’s deadly!
First mature bird I ever killed was sheer dumb luck. I overcalled and hung him up at 100 yards for an hour then he shut up. Gave up and went to the truck. Half hour later I cracked a Mountain Dew all pissed off and heard him gobbling his brains out right where I was set up. Snuck halfway to him chirped once and he came running. Best hunt I ever had with no real idea what I was doing🤣
I'm new at turkey hunting and I'm a little confused about something. Dale, you said in your video that when you hear that gobble you need to move closer because that's what hens do in nature. The sits and waits for the hen to come to him. I've heard many people talk about calling and the Tom comes to them. So after calling and you hear that first gobble, what should you do next? Be quiet and watch and wait? Call a second time? Move closer and call? I still don't know what's the best next step. The guy I'm hunting with right now has been hunting turkey for years on his own property. We sit in a blind and call, Tom gobbles, we call again, Tom gobbles etc. After while the shuts up and we think he's on his way so we get quite and the next time we hear a gobble he's way off in the distance.
Turkey hunting is brand new here in New Brunswick Canada, I’ve been on 2 hunts and both times we did hen calls and the Tom came to us. The last hunt I called rod a buddy the ol Tom left 3 hens on a manure pile for the call I built. It was epic.
First time turkey hunting 2 weeks ago. Got within 70 yards of a gobbler and he went completely quiet. Figured I'd got spotted and sad down against a tree to assess. Less than a minute later momma bear and 2 cubs come strolling on by within 10 yards. Never saw or winded me. Figured I'd call that a successful first hunt and try another day.
If I’m not in a blind or set up where they will pitch down directly in my lap imma do some work I like them to fire up again 10-11 am and drag them out of that strut zone I started working mine last season at 11:30 and he stopped about a hundred yards and stayed in his spot I backed out and drug him every bit of 500 yards thru the woods soft calling him every hundo Shot him at 10’ no where near where he decided to camp out I made him work for it If all else fails do the opposite of what you think I’ve killed at least 20 birds by simply walking away and making them think their new date is leaving…!!!!
Guarantee plenty of Turkey Veterans besides me are watching your videos! One thing, I have seen more+ more of on the Public Lands is the " Sprinting Spring Turkey Hunter" I don't know if these are Younger guys or what. Few years back, I hit a Crow call and got a Gobble response in the next Field. 100 yards away and out of the woods comes a Sprinting Spring Hunter moving towards the Rockwall separating both fields. He was moving!! I know he saw me. That's Public Land though. No shot was heard thank goodness.
When you said the setup is the most important thing you do, I knew you were a turkey hunter. I tell new hunter, where you sit down is the biggest key to killing turkey's. I try to alway get where he has to be inside killing range before he can see me, or I can see him. Can't always get it perfect, but I have seen this prove itself for 40 years.
I'll never forget that time two old geezers (who claimed to be seasoned turkey hunters) arrived half an hour after sun up and started responding to EVERY gobble, even going as far as to STAND UP in a field to call back, they couldn't sit still for two seconds. The worst part is we called the Tom to the edge of the bush, no more than 40 yards infront of us. These jokers ruined our closing day for what would've been a guaranteed turkey for us. It didn't help they were insufferable and accused us of hunting past legal hours, meanwhile they were party hunting (illegal).
IDK man, I've killed tons of turkeys by closing the distance on gobbling birds that are hung up and probably wouldn't have come in otherwise. I cover lots of ground calling and walking, lots of times they won't gobble until you're inside of 100 yards. Also if you don't get them right off the roost, go get coffee and head back into the woods late morning
Your videos help me a lot. I hadn’t killed a tom in years but I ended up getting my second big Tom of the year Sunday morning. Thanks for the calling advise I always try soft calling first now; and both times it worked when the bird was within that gobble echo range

The explanation of why you shouldn't call to a turkey while walking towards him didn't make sense to me (2:20 - 3:11). Dale said the same dynamic happens in nature, where the tom will call and strut in the same place while waiting for the hen to come to him. So why is it a mistake to mimic what naturally occurs? I'm guessing the problem is that in that scenario, the tom isn't moving towards you because he thinks you're a hen coming to him. And I guess he could get spooked when he sees it's not a hen. But still doesn't make sense to me if you can sneak up on him within 30-40 yards to take your shot. Is that unrealistic?
Went this past Saturday had my first opportunity right off roost he got hung up 100 yards out he finally went the other way then next opportunity he was gobbling his head off on a ridge and the wind picked up he went on his way 2 hours later I was walking a old road bed doing a couple yelps every now and then he hammered off and I found me a small cut in on the side of the road called to him once more he was within 100 then inside of 50 behind me I had to crawl 20 yards in my belly looked up on the road there was not one but two toms strutting in the road i hit him with a soft call boy he came into 5 yards on a string and the big boy took a ride that day man it was cool I told my self after the first two the 3 times the charm and “set up” was absolutely they key to killing that turkey
There are many mistakes to be made, and you shed light on the one we all struggle with. But, busted birds are great memories too. Getting close enough to close the deal is electrifying. Good word, thanks.
I'm relatively new to turkey hunting. I've had two experts call me in two nice Easterns and I finally tried solo. I watched this video and killed a 21.8 lb. Eastern with a 12 inch beard and 1 1/2 inch spurs taking your advice.
If hens go to the gobblers like you said, why do gobblers often come to our calls? I've only killed one so maybe it's just my personal experience. Last year I was walking around and hit a call once and I heard alot of gobbles in a field at the bottom of the hill I was on. I set up on top of the hill and hit it again and I could see them through the trees running towards me.
Last year I was moving to my spot, on an old logging road. It was just turning daylight. To my surprise, 3 hens, and 2 gobblers came over a rise, directly towards me. I froze, and had a hell of a time getting my gun up, without being spotted. I picked out the biggest gobbler, and shot it. The hens scattered, but what happened next is shocking. The other gobbler starts flogging the one that I had shot. It literally dragged my kill all the way down the mountain, and drug it off of a high wall, into a briar patch. The commotion was intense. I follow the trail of feathers, and rustled leaves down, and found my kill. Maybe the young gobbler was tired of being whipped by the larger one, and decided it was a good time for revenge. I don't have a clue why he did it. Has something like this ever happened to any of you out there????? It was insane, and hilarious.
Never had it happen to me, but I’ve heard of it before. I believe your intuition is correct; you shot the more dominant bird. Toms typically group up with the same other Tom’s year after year. They likely have lived around each other since they were newly hatched. Those birds are always trying to knock each other lower down the totem pole, so when you dropped your bird, the subordinate bird decided that it was a good time to get his licks in.
This spring i experienced something I have never experienced before. I was calling to a group that was 300 Meters away. They answered, and the 2 Toms came sprinting towards me as I was calling, those two toms were being followed by 4 jakes. This was a hunt i'll always remember. here is the video: ruclips.net/video/eRZkNMUOy_g/видео.html
This is my third season listening to this talk. It's kind of like my little pep talk. I laugh every time I watch it as I have made every single one of these mistakes and had the exact outcome he mentions. Thank you sir for helping me be more intentional and stopping to pause and think when that turkey gobbles. A little bit of patience and planning in the turkey woods goes a long way.
I appreciate your videos they really help me in the hardwoods ! I live in missouri an the turkey hunting isn't bad I've learned to have more pateince turkey hunting an sometimes it pays off an other times well I blowed it an thats turkey hunting thanks an keep these videos coming!
Late to the party with this comment, but do you still use a crow call for heavily hunted birds? I’ve seen guys spook birds badly with a crow call where I hunt, lots of hunters in the area. Been super hesitant to use a locator for that reason. Love to hear your thoughts.
Running water also can act as background noise to be used to your advantage but at the same time don’t abuse it, wild turkeys hearing is excellent and vision is 3x better than a humans during the day
Another Great video , I enjoy watching your videos . Learn a lot , can’t wait to turkey season with my kids this spring . It’s good turkey hunting here in the north east . Always try to learn from my mistakes o make over the many years of hunting.
nice vid.. I do the opposite when I locate a gobbler that won't come, I call to him and walk away.. the run back and wait for him to swing by.. also I have had a lot of success gobbling at birds in the afternoon who are out looking for gals.. never forget the last turkey hunt I had with Mr. Bill Harmon.. we had a bird 90 yards away in sight but another bird in the field across the creek... When I gobbled at him I thought Mr. Bill was gonna come unglued, but to his own admission it was a brilliant move because that dude came screaming in as he finally noticed the full strut decoy> I did not want to lose him to the other bird, Bill shot him at 12 yards, wad hit it in the face
If hes talking back your in the game be patient and work him slow sometimes the shock gobble will make him come running but water for about 20 to 30 min before you hit him with the shock gobble he thinks your moveing in on his lady and he gets mad and comes a runing work many times for me
Be my first time turkey hunting this year. Been a deer hunter all my life so I’m no stranger to the woods but u give good advice and I enjoy learning tips from u. Keep it coming man!
I am a novice turkey hunter. I have not killed my first gobbler for the season is not open yet. However, I think another important detail worth recognizing is game trails. Like most animals turkeys do utilize game trails. And if you're in a spot, and a turkey is coming to you, you should do your best to create a mental map of known game trails. That way you might be able to predict the birds movements along trails. And ultimately, where he may pop out.
Good advice about no packing it in if you cant call the first one in. I have killed birds 9-10 oclock in the morning on the other side of a 100 acre farm, after failing on the first one.
Outstanding video! as a new Hunter learning to hunt , really appreciate how clear and easy you explain things in your videos. Ever do some Hunting in the ADK would love to join you a learn....Keep those videos coming brother

Great video. I'm learning something new every season. Can't get enough information!

Thanks so much
This spring i experienced something I have never experienced before. I was calling to a group that was 300 Meters away. They answered, and the 2 Toms came sprinting towards me as I was calling, those two toms were being followed by 4 jakes. This was a hunt i'll always remember. here is the video:

At the moment they are sold out but check back there at the site in a week or so . Thanks for watching

Me to 31 yrs👍
God bless a good crow call!
Late to the party with this comment, but do you still use a crow call for heavily hunted birds? I’ve seen guys spook birds badly with a crow call where I hunt, lots of hunters in the area. Been super hesitant to use a locator for that reason. Love to hear your thoughts.
Buddy wearing all that free mossy oak gear. These are basically commercials
Lol well I’m not sponsored by Mossy Oak I have been wearing and BUYING Mossy Oak since 1994. So no free stuff :). I Just tell what I like to use

Got another call...... slam the door!😅
Me and my dad have hunted together for years and when we hear that turkey we move instantly and call along the way so I’m gonna try to stop doing that
Running water also can act as background noise to be used to your advantage but at the same time don’t abuse it, wild turkeys hearing is excellent and vision is 3x better than a humans during the day
I always get one to gobble and take a nap.I enjoy being in the woods not just killing turkey.
My opening day was today and we got 15 inches of snow lol I didn't go I'm getting old but I'm itching to get out there
Man I made them all this morning
Thank you for the great information. I always like watching your videos!
I got my first Spring turkey the other day! I'm hooked!
Another Great video , I enjoy watching your videos . Learn a lot , can’t wait to turkey season with my kids this spring . It’s good turkey hunting here in the north east . Always try to learn from my mistakes o make over the many years of hunting.
I was out 2 days ago (Southern VT) at 6:30am walking the dog in the woods and heard the first gobbles of the year. Super exciting.
No way! That’s sweet. I haven’t heard anything yet (northeast kingdom). I did have one gobbling in July though. Best of luck to you.
Dale is legit as shit ..love ya man
Great info!
This was both helpful and encouraging. Thank you!

Why would a hen roost alone?
If hes talking back your in the game be patient and work him slow sometimes the shock gobble will make him come running but water for about 20 to 30 min before you hit him with the shock gobble he thinks your moveing in on his lady and he gets mad and comes a runing work many times for me
👍👍👍😁

Be my first time turkey hunting this year. Been a deer hunter all my life so I’m no stranger to the woods but u give good advice and I enjoy learning tips from u. Keep it coming man!
Good luck
Or you just sit and wait
I am a novice turkey hunter. I have not killed my first gobbler for the season is not open yet. However, I think another important detail worth recognizing is game trails. Like most animals turkeys do utilize game trails. And if you're in a spot, and a turkey is coming to you, you should do your best to create a mental map of known game trails. That way you might be able to predict the birds movements along trails. And ultimately, where he may pop out.

Yep to much calling
Good advice about no packing it in if you cant call the first one in.
I have killed birds 9-10 oclock in the morning on the other side of a 100 acre farm, after failing on the first one.
Outstanding video! as a new Hunter learning to hunt , really appreciate how clear and easy you explain things in your videos. Ever do some Hunting in the ADK would love to join you a learn....Keep those videos coming brother
New 2022 videos starting February 1st. Stay tuned for a new season of great instruction videos
Why does Michigan only let you kill one turkey the whole year how fucking dumb is that go out hunting once and if you kill a Tom but he ain’t that big that’s gonna suck although I’m sure no one gives a fuck about the law Like most other things. Im new to turkey hunting and all the laws for a simple turkey is insane to me there’s millions in Michigan no worry about then going extinct
I hunt public land so I don’t want him gobbling after I hear him until I’m on him or I’ll be calling against 10 other guy’s!!
Seems I have to relearn this lesson from time to time. I started turkey hunting in 1989.
