For a very systematic study of alternate picking, see Bill Leavitt’s book Melodic Rhythms. (If you haven’t already)
BTW I believe Charlie Christian used mainly down picking. Once you get your Down Up picking like Lage Lund said you should, you’ll find that you will need to be able to pick just down ( like that phrase towards the end of your demonstration CC solo where the succession of upbeats will sound more emphatic with down strokes... it feels awkward to start with, but if you listen to CC playing the same phrase, you’ll hear it!)

Very interesting. I found this vid on reddit & had to check you out 'cause you're Irish and I play the same guitar. Look forward to see more.

You make a good point about how guitarists learn their instruments compared to other types of musicians. My teacher is a classical guitarist who also teaches modern styles on electric guitars. So my experience learning guitar is more similar to pianists, violinists etc and I'm very grateful for it.
