    I love the transparency in you relationship with the detailer and what you get out of it! So many people on RUclips promoting stuff they either make out like they paid for or that they claim they love and you never see them again with it

    Good vlog. Enjoyed this one lots.
    Being lucky enough to have seen the results today when you collected yours it was interesting to see just how many of the ‘battle scars’ of those near 85,000 miles were still on the car when you dropped it off. Made the results today even more incredible.
    So glad I could help you out-funny how all of life’s events connect-I buy a Tesla helped directly by your vlog, we both end up with a collection of skateboards through meeting each other and then I recommend your ceramic coat and assist with the loaner. Yet more
    reasons I’m so glad I didn’t just get another Mercedes on lease.
    Nice one James.

    Ampera owner here, can’t believe there still isn’t anything better than the 6yr old technology gm built. Loads of regen, single pedal driving nearly all the time, I get 40 miles in this winter weather and it goes like stink if you want... oh, did I mention they’re about 12 grand now and still warranted :)

      I am in the same boat , so I second that :) Still no better PHEV than Ampera/Volt, but then again they are EREV's. A tiny, but meaningful difference.. So we might say Ampera/Volt is a class of itself.. :)

    I agree that PHEVs have their place for at least a few more years. If money were no object, I would have gotten a Model S and driven 100% on electricity. But, for a fraction of the cost I got a Chevy Volt and drive 95% on electricity. For me, it's a reasonable compromise. Bonus is that it has Android Auto, unlike Model S.

    • @mebeingU2
      @mebeingU2 6 лет назад +1

      Dan Sanger, I had a Volt before I got a model S. The Volt is a great transitional car. I thought it was well engineered and performed well. It's funny how so many ripped on Chevy's Volt, but so many car companies have copied it...BMW, Kia, Volvo, etc. Enjoy your car and hopefully you can grab an S in the future.

      Well, 6 years later PHEVs still make more sense than a full EV. EVs, at least in Canada. The cost of a battery is still way too high and often times costs more than the ev car.

    Thank you James, for being the only EV channel reviewer I've heard, extolling the virtues of a PHEV! We only have one car, so it has to do everything, but I can't afford a long range (good quality) BEV. I will drive everywhere in EV mode, except long distances on holiday etc! I don't know enough about the Optima at the moment but it's a healthy battery size and, being a Golf driver at the moment, think the Niro might be too big? Looking like a 225xe (if I want to sell my soul) or the GTE Golf!

    I have the Optima PHEV, very good car that I charge at home and work so can be doing 60 miles per day pure EV. I did look at BMW and Mercedes PHEV, the Kia though has 7 year car warranty and get this 10 year battery warranty, the other 2 could not touch this. Also the Kia had a 9.7 kw battery and I think the others had 6 06 7 kw, this actuality is a big difference. I do not understand why Kia do not make more of a public shout out regarding the 7 and 10 year warranty.

    I think the term you were looking for is Audiophile. When you mentioned the EV only range I rolled my eyes. But then I realised you said 38 miles, not 38km, (I live in a metric country). Useful.

    • @JamesCookeVlogs
      @JamesCookeVlogs  6 лет назад

      Well technically it is only supposed to be able to do 33 miles or 53km. I'm planning on getting more EV range from it than that though.

  • @Chrisb8s

    I live my volt and it has 40 miles range and the engine only kicks in in hold “sometimes, because it still uses the regen”. It is great. I would get a new one if I wasn’t waiting for my model 3. I can take it anywhere. Only tesla will do that in Arizona.

    Hi James, this is a Fair Optima PHEV mini review, it is not a racing car, just a saloon for motorways, but with a bit partially sporty look, because it was designed by Peter Schreyer's Team (a German automobile designer before famous for the Audi TT), it is a cheaper middle class hybrid car only, for those who cannot afford Tesla and dont want to look like a taxi driver, because most of the cheap hybrid cars are still ugly, small or designed and used for uber, etc. (Toyota Prius). This Optima is a bridge between the past and the future, already a big improvement from Kia (I know, the Kia Stinger or the Kia K900 are also exist), but still can recommend this car to anybody who wish to switch to hybrid - it is a comfortable starter with only few minor compromises.

  • @AndyC2_
    @AndyC2_ 6 лет назад +1

    Yeah great vlog and review James, quite like the idea of a Hybrid myself, think I still prefer the ioniq but I love the 7yr warranty on the Kia !!

  • @kens97sto171
    @kens97sto171 6 лет назад +2

    For many of us, you need a Hybrid. 200 miles gets me basically nowhere..
    Unless I could get 500-800 miles and or recharge in 10 min or less, I'll stick with gas or Hybrids.
    And this issue is true for at least half the population of the US.
    City dwellers.. probably not an issue.
    Also have issues with apartments and other places that don't have garages. No place to plug it it.

    • @Aaron-lc8nf
      @Aaron-lc8nf 5 лет назад

      A regular hybrid can probably go an insane amount of distance because of the mpg.
      That being said, superchargers charge your car in an hour or so, so it's not all bad although I agree it will take some time to adjust to

  • @michaelowen7694

    Really good review. PHEVs ideal for, say, a one car family where the limited range of the cheaper EVs (Leaf, EGolf, Zoe etc) can pose problems from time to time especially for people like me who are developing public charge point phobia even though I don't own an EV! (seen too many vids of people mucking about with Apps and cards in the pouring rain or even having to cross the Motorway via the service road).

  • @ross7464
    @ross7464 6 лет назад

    Been pondering about getting the i3 ceramic coated so I’ll be keen to see how you get on. I know that PHEV’s aren’t massively popular in the EV community, but I think that as you say they are a good transition until batteries are cheaper and bigger. My dealer said that nearly 80% of the i3’s he sells are range extenders as it gives you a great opportunity to be electric most of the time and then use the petrol motor for when you don’t want to stop on a long journey or can’t find somewhere to charge.

    • @JamesCookeVlogs
      @JamesCookeVlogs  6 лет назад +1

      Thing with the i3 REX is it isn't really a PHEV, really it is an EV with a range extender. The dividing line for me is, if the petrol tank was bone dry, how much car is left. The Kia Optima PHEV for example would be left with a range that very difficult to live with (without going grey), it likes to pop the engine on for a couple minutes to get things heated up on cold mornings, etc... Your i3 will still be a fully functional car, regardless of what is or isn't in the petrol tank.

    James - how’s the in town acceleration in electric mode - acceptable? Or somewhat lacking? 30 miles in EV mode that you can use at will could produce some significant fuel economy numbers for low speed - stop and go - driving. This would make a great daily driver for lots of people!

    • @JamesCookeVlogs
      @JamesCookeVlogs  6 лет назад

      I thought the around town EV acceleration was perfectly acceptable, especially as there was no noticeable lag when the pedal was initially pressed, so getting out at a junction was nice and easy.

    • @JamesCookeVlogs
      @JamesCookeVlogs  6 лет назад

      Heating and cooling didn't seem to make any difference to the range. When you first start off in the morning though (when it is cold), it does have a tendency to put the petrol engine on for a couple of minutes to get things heated up, even if you are in EV mode. This short term running of the engine didn't use an amount of fuel that you would notice though (didn't even knock 1 mile off the petrol range reported by the car).

    @ 8:37 you say it is more bouncy than your Tesla, but then add on about the 21” wheels vs. the 19” wheels. This thoroughly confused me.
    From most bouncy to least bouncy, are you saying things line up as:
    1. The Kia (most bouncy)
    2. Tesla Model S on 19” wheels
    3. Tesla Model S on 21” wheels (least bouncy)
    ?

    • @JamesCookeVlogs
      @JamesCookeVlogs  6 лет назад

      Yes that's what I'm saying, though perhaps my definitely of bouncy needs refinement. The 21" wheels on my Tesla are very harsh, go over bump and the car falls back to the road with a hud, the 19" wheels less so, the Kia even less again. However you also get progressively more bounce back up after the drop as you through this list. The Kia is the most comfortable at smoothing out bumps, but suffers in terms of feel for the road as a result.

    • @JamesCookeVlogs
      @JamesCookeVlogs  6 лет назад +2

      In terms of interior finish, it is much more cluttered, seats much softer, generally seemed very well made though. Can't speak to mechanical reliability as I don't have it for long enough obviously, but with the PHEV drivetrain you have lots more bits to go wrong than with a pure EV. I would say that the car probably had a more solid feel than my Tesla (things like door closing sound, etc...).

      Does it have a spare wheel? If you replace spare wheel with RAC or AA membership, then you can use that space for installation of LPG tank, and that's another extra 100 miles :) well, in everyday driving it would be 30 miles of EV and then 100 miles on LPG which is nearly half-price of petrol, while only a little bit higher rate of consumption.

      Maybe for free, but yes of course you are right. All my motoring budget is sunk into the car for quite some time. That was the deal I made with myself when I bought it. However I've noted that almost everyone who gets a Tesla seems to get the thing ceramic coated and I've always wondered if it really made that much difference. Also over the last year I've started to seriously notice the damage that has accumulated on my paintwork, mainly due to my tendency to use supermarket car washes. I'm hoping that the pain will end up as good as new and hopefully with the coating it will be quick enough to clean that I can do it myself.

      One other factor is the Maintenance cost and repairs on BMW vs a Kia. At least in the US Kia is always near the top in our reliability scores.
      Also a bonus for us is the Optima (most models) are built in the USA. So good for local jobs.

      kens97sto171 That's true but I'll still be getting the BMW as I don't see the point in paying prestige money for a "normal" car, I buy all my cars 3 to 4 years old with low mileage and my dad does all my servicing so I don't pay BMW prices. I'll get the 330e in a few years and then a model 3 after that probably, when I have a house with a driveway and can charge it

      Understand... For us in the States.. that BMW is way more expensive almost $44k, and the Kia is about what you mentioned $35k.
      For me personally I don't care about the Prestige factor.
      I don't see a German built, over expensive unreliable car as being more prestigious...
      Same with Mercedes.
      I'd take the Kia all day everyday over the BMW.
