- Gid Tanner & the Skillet-Lickers' 1926 recording of "Ya Gotta Quit Kickin My Dog Aroun". The accompanying animation is from Walt Disney's "Alice and the Dog Catcher" from 1924 (pre-Mickey Mouse). Starring Virginia Davis as Alice.
Lyrics:
Me and old Lem Briggs and old Bill Brown
Took a load of corn to town
Old Jim dog, the on'ery pup
He just naturally followed us up
Chorus:
Every time I come to town
The boys go to kicking my dog around
Makes no difference if he's a hound
Ya gotta quit kicking my dog around
As we driv' past the country store
A passel of yaps came out the door
Jim he scooted behind a box
Showered him with sticks and rocks
They tied a tin can to his tail
And run him past the county jail
That just naturally makes me sore
Bill he cussed and Lem he swore
(Lead singer Riley Puckett left out the traditional ending to this song. It should end with: )
Me and Lem Briggs and old Bill Brown
Lost no time a-getting down
We whupped them fellers to the ground
For kickin' my old dog, Jim, around
Jim seed his duty there and then
He sure let into those gentlemen
He sure messed up that townhouse square
With rags and meat and hide and hair
What ever happened to the live girl?
Still enjoy
Wikipedia says there were four different ones.
According to Wikipedia, Virginia Davis lived till 2009 (aged 90). She only officially has 3 feature film credits, but she appeared in bit roles from the 1920s-40s. She got married in '43 and practically retired from the movies, only appearing in one more film in 1946. Afterward, she worked as a real estate agent for 25 years. Was married for over 60 years until her husband died in 2005.
My folks had this on a 78 when I was a kid, by Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers with Riley Puckett on the Banjo. I loved the name of the group as much as I loved the song. I guess I haven't heard it in maybe 55 years. Thanks for posting.
My dad always sang this and he grew up in west Philly.
I'm sure those of you that have watched the movie "Kellys Heros" Heard part of this song sang in it. The man that played Roy Luther On The Waltons 'Sang It'. THX.
Great old song at 96 years old, thanks for posting 👍
On the Clint Eastwood movie "Kellys Heroes" one of the soldiers played and sang a few lines of the song.
First time ive heard it. I like it alot.
Rhanks very much for sharing.
It was Harry Dean Stanton.
I was in the Air Force with a guy from Arkansas by the name of Al. He used to sing this song. I've never forgotten him or the song.
Watch this many times. . .so old and corny but I still keep coming back and watch it over again!!
This is a song my grandfather used to sing to us back in the 50s. And also Froggie went a courting.
Wow, this is great. This deserves ten stars! Usually movie and music combos piss me off, but this goes perfectly together.
I can remember seeing these kind of cartoons in the early 1950's on the NEW TV!!!
I'll gladly take hold of any music made by the good old Skillet Lickers .. anywhere .. any time !! This tune & comic twist is landmark typical material from Gid and the rest of the crew. I could listen to this awesome old-time string-band play all day. And your video material featuring very-early Disney animation is equally magnificent. Fantastic all-round posting !! Good on you !! You've won me !!
Still come back to hear every now and then.
This is some of the greatest "new" music I've heard in years!!! Thank you for sharing!
My Gramps would sing this, now he’s gone but the song is still lives on strong!!!
@TheSpeeddemonds
Thats not true and u no it...stop sadfishing ya weee twaaatt
I was in the Army with a guy from Detroit by the name of Sokol. A funny guy who used to sing this song. I've never forgotten it. Hiya Dave?!!
This Brought Tears To My Eyes .. + Gives me an Idea as to Where my Daughters Next Dog Can be Found 🙀🙀🙀🙀🥸👌👌👌👌
I first heard this song (or part of it) in the movie Kelly's Heroes, but never knew anything about it until now.
Same here
Thanks for this; I had heard only Buffy Ste. Marie's version, sung with the mouth bow, and had not realized that it was so old or so well known.
The legendary 1920s ALL-STAR band of pickers from the great state of Georgia.... featuring guitarist Riley Puckett on vocals.
Very interesting! I didn't know they had the capability to mix real actors and animation like that in those days. Disney was quite the innovator.
Hahaha I found this while looking up songs by Skillet and became obsessed(:
I put a mandolin together (nut replacement) and that was one of the easy tunes to learn. Thought I'd search Y.T. for it. pretty cool, 22 years before I was born. Love the band playing. Thanks.
Charming.
I'm a cat person and I 100% agree with this song. Also...here from Kelly's Hero's...
this song is what finally got me to quit the habit of kicking my neighbors dog around
Terry Gilkyson and the Easy Riders released an album with a song called Quit Kickin' My Dog Around, in the late 50s. Terry's song was obviously inspired by this song, but his had completely different lyrics. His chorus went:
You can carve me up with a Bowie knife,
You can steal my wife,
But if you love your life,
Quit kickin' my dog around.
This is really, really very good.
Very good. However, it's been in my head for the last couple days. Very catchy!
This is my favorite version of the song. Good stuff.
Good stuff. Funny too.
what would my mind do without that !. thanks
had to watch again. lol
That's one you never forget or get tired of for me anyway 👍👏😁
A supremely unique talent, this band .. & fabulously, awesomely enjoyable !! Superb posting, congrats clotho98 !!
Simpler times. Good stuff.
Very simple compared to today
Awesome video I never realised they had done this sort of thing at the time.
But of course I'm here for Ged and Riley!
Love this cartoon thx for sharing it
Nice visuals incorporated in this historic ♫ video!
Bumping this shit EVERY where! Up here in la County
loved it!
Uncle Dave Macon is another star of the era. Plenty of his numbers on here. Look him up.
Awesome song and loved the video!!!
The little girl (Virginia Davis) died in August, 2009 at 90 years. Check out the history of "Alice's Wonderland" on the internet. This is how Walt Disney started out.
Oh, yeah, I love Gideon Tanner, too!
Damn I thought she would be gone much longer
Walter Disney oftentimes was seen in the credits of his movies as, "Retlaw Yensid," since he was a known, practicing Satanist. Did "The Wizard's Apprentice" seem like an appropriate cartoon for children? Nope! .....nor is most of the s0d0my & New Age-promoting junk that Disney has put out for the past 85 years.
Trying to write a quarantine version of this song... we can’t go out we gotta stay in...something something quarantined
Great
Great cartoon and song 😁👏👏👍
Thanks for much for posting. I belong to the Old Time Fiddlers in Prince George, BC and play banjo, which I can hear in this video. We play Gid Tanner songs like Bully of the Town, Shortnin. Bread (minus the "N" word, but no disrespect to Gid Tanner, whose music gives so much enjoyment!)
been a long time since I heard ⚡
Obvs here because of kellys heroes 👌
bill moseley good call Bill, that's awesome - awesome movie!
Hell yeah, hurry up and get that ionosphere out of the way we've got the game on!
We ain’t got no booze
Don't hit me with those negative waves so early in the morning...
@@hmkrich if so, then how much booze do you have?

Kelly's hero's brought me here😂
Love it!
This is great!

cool cartoon -
My great grandfather was Clayton Mcmichen...
You come from good stock!
Greetings! This title was on a reissue LP I had as a teenager...This one seems like a different take from the one used on the source record, which wouldn't be unusual for COLUMBIA.
Luv it, luv it, luv it,...sooooo glad "sony" didn't get their claws into it!

Still a GOOD song!!
This was the song/campaign slogan for Champ Clark who went up against Woodrow Wilson for President in 1912.
This song was rebirthed in the "Hank the Cowdog" book series and audio book series.

They used to draw these frames by hand.
Mark Gelbart Really? I kinda doubt it. It doesn’t make senses to draw them Frame by frame when you can use a computer to do it much more efficiently. Ya might want to do some research or use some common sense before sayjng things that obviously aren’t true. It would be basically impossible to draw a whole cartoon like this, let a long a movie, “drawing the frames by hand” as you put it. I mean what does that even mean, lol? You’re probably talking about the actual frames for paintings and stuff. These are cells in cartoons. I know there’s a good video shows how South Park is made. That might help you out. Typical clueless boomer. Next thing you’re going to say is they drew the girl into the cartoon too. Wrong they use a green screen. Look up anything made by NASA and you can usually see it being used which is cool they still use the same technology like a couple decades later.
@@Coincidence_Theorist Hey moron. I wrote they "used" to draw these frames by hand. You know...before computers. There were no computers in 1926.
PhotoSmith Photography This has to be a troll comment.
@@MonotoneCreeper a joke. A lonely afternoon. A COVID thing. Along with what we have now - the COVID belly. (Similar to the beer belly, but different) See? Just to stir up some excitement.🤣
Buffy Saint Marie did a great version of this.
That idiot from John Wick really should've listened to this before he thought about stealing his car.
I had NO IDEA they had that kind of technology back then. it must've been EXTREMELY expensive let's say hmm.... $9000.00?
Bob Dylan e the band 🔝🎼❤️😊 the bootleg series 11
"Attica!! Attica!! Attica!!"
Love this music and these guys but that's one problem I don't have with Snowflake here.
@Luigi84289 Actually his name was Julius, but an obvious Felix copy"cat"
I bet Homeland Security is hot in pursuit at that girl's heels... Let's hope she has a fake social security number...
kinda creepy a six year old made the vid
Just like the creeps that picked my dog up in OK. then wanted to put him down for not having his hair combed out, sick, twisted Nazi's. BTW that dog is now 17, and their dogs are dead.
such a silly cartoon.
