Interesting that this should pop up on my feed today of all days. Some background to explain the good and bad of this game.
Originally it was to be a sequel of Starfleet Academy (the PC release) Not the SNES version which while similar, didn't really share a lot with the PC version. The same engine and mechanics were to be used with some tweaking. When development started it quickly became apparent that the old engine wouldn't work so changes were made; however, the release timeline was not as flexible as was needed. The "Ginsu" effects were added, all the new commands and controls, new ship models, etc... but the graphics were still limited due to resolution constraints. Then one day, I think it was Manny Salazar, came up with a brilliant way to scale up the graphics and break the original limitations which I think were 800 x 600. This opened up more possibilities but getting extensions on the schedule that original planned for a redress of Starfleet Academy" was not simple. So working literally around the clock the development team was adding planned features, working out bugs, smoothing out gameplay, etc... while the question was being posed "Do we just cancel the game?" as was done with "Vulcan Fury" around the same time. The reception of the demo and some live development testing bought some time but not much for completion of the game.
In the end the game went gold with known issues and already a patch being created to simply make the game as fully playable as possible even as the staff were pulled away or dismissed essentially as soon as the game released. I think the team knew all the bugs and fixes that needed to be done, they just didn't have the time to complete them. Another few months and I realy believe this game would have been a lot better.
Their were a bunch of Easter Eggs of course: You command the Bird of Prey from ST6 a couple times, you go up against a "simulated" Kirk commanded Enterprise, the whale probe is there somewhere, the planet killer, the brother of Colonel Worf (who defended Kirk and McCoy at their trial in ST6) is in there, there is an alien UFO that fires cows instead of torpedoes, a system that has the planet rotations and orbits cranked up really fast, Kang's last words are "I go to the 'Undiscovered Country from whose born no traveler returns.'", a direct reference to ST6 and at the same time him acknowledging his death and at the same time protecting you the character from what is to come.
I was going through cleaning out old computer disks today and getting rid of things that I haven't used in years and came across some development releases of Klingon Academy from back then and it brought back some memories. I know the guys worked really hard on this one against tight schedules, understaffing, and limited resources to try to make a really good Star Trek game and I guess it says something that 24 years later there are still people that speak well of it.

Wait a sec, you worked on the game? Dude this is an honor having you comment on my channel. And I'd like to thank you for all the hard work you and the team spent on this game. I specifically remember that fast spinning planet when I played this as a kid but couldn't find it again when I made this video. I just chalked it up to me remembering a really weird bug but you commenting just now confirms it was an Easter egg. So thanks once again and I hope one day Klingon Academy finds it's way to the GOG store for a brand new generation to finally play this game.

@@BenKii I did work with the team on this. As I mentioned before, the resources and staffing for this were limited (if you read through the credits you see the same names repeat several times). The interest in the demo helped keep the game alive but only bought so much time. In the credits you will find a list of people under "special thanks", there is a pretty long list. These, including myself with a misspelling were mostly people brought in as volunteers to do assist in various ways, mostly as kind of an extended testing/ troubleshooting of the internal testing. Kind of like beta testing but far more accelerated and in depth, more closely to the internal testing. This was before high speed internet so daily they would send out the current developer build for that day we would test for a day, document issues and often have a call late that night, early morning along with emails. This freed the team to work more on fixing the bugs than trying to identify everything as well as allowing the team to get input on feature changes and test across various PC's.
Even after 24 years I still stay in touch with some of the people although admittedly I haven't played the game in probably 22 or 23 years although maybe it is time to revisit as I know there were patches made to allow it to run on modern systems if you have the game (which I have seen on Ebay). Back in the day the disks frequently were un-readable at the start but worked fine after a light cleaning. To reduce wear, it was also possible to copy the disk contents to the local folders as well. This also prevented you from having to switch disks every few missions.
The fast spinning planets and fast orbits I think were part of a test on the physics of the solar systems that were just left in there at the end. In the game the planets do orbit and rotate, just at a much slower pace normally. It's been a long time and I don't recall where all the Easter eggs are but there was an effort to make exploring a fun addition, even if it didn't get filled out completely.
Also, chronologically this game has the first appearance of who would become Chancellor K'Mpec who would appear in episodes of TNG to decide between Duras and Gowron as the next leader.
As far as any future release, I honestly don't know. During the development the people working on the Star Trek games were broken off into 14 Degrees East which is the actual "company" the game was developed under, even though it was a part of Interplay. 14 degrees east didn't last long though as the bulk of several of the teams were dismissed or moved to other projects before being dismissed as soon as the games hit the shelves. The remains were bought by Taldren which didn't last long either. I think EA bought part of those remains but I don't know who has the rights at this point. The games on GOG from Interplay I think are from the "Interplay" developers and licenses. That's where my knowledge of what happened to 14 Degrees East ends.
Black Isle and the remains of Interplay that Titus held ended up back at Interplay and are the games I think currently distributed on GOG. I'll ask some of the guys to see if they know where the Klingon Academy rights ended up.

He believes Interplay still owns the rights to the code now and of course Paramount/ CBS to the Intellectual property. If that is the case, there is always a chance it could get released on GOG given that there have already been patches to make it work on new systems.

My favorite moment playing this game back in the day was lining up a shot for a spread of torpedoes on a Federation ship who's shields I had pounded down, don't remember which one, and cutting loose. I was sure, I mean SURE, that this was going to end this ship which was a good thing because I was on my last leg. The Saucer section was flat on to me, perfect firing angle I thought. The first torpedo slams into the saucer, massive explosion, I began raising my voice in triumph... and then the rest of the torpedoes flew right THROUGH the massive hole in the Saucer the first torpedo had ripped. I had never seen damage modeling in a game before that wasn't cosmetic, it blew me away. By that I mean the ship turned around and blew me away.
10/10, would die for the empire again.

Klingon Academy is the greatest Star Trek miniseries never broadcasted, yet sets up ST6 and even the TNG's Romulan Klingon animosity so well its almost a shame it was never actual miniseries. It even explains why Gorkon was willing to make peace, he knew the state of the Empire was in after War of the Usurper, then Praxis happened. Making peace with the UFP was the only way to insure the Empire survived period let alone into the TNG era.

On one hand, this game is in desperate need of a competent remake. On the other hand, "competent" isn't really a word I associate with the modern gaming industry. "Faithful" isn't, either.
Which is a damn shame as ginsuing (that's how they called their ship destruction system iirc) ships with the whole power of a modern GPU dedicated to nothing but a few models on screen would be a spectacular sight, especially considering that the game as-is in all its ancient tech glory still has an undeniable wow factor. There just isn't anything like it.

Never played this game I got used to the Super Nintendo Starfleet Academy game. If I look around my office I'm pretty sure I can find the index card that I wrote down my save codes for a perfect Academy score on. I also remember cheesing the game and being able to spot the visual distortion of a cloaked ship and taking advantage of it. That is almost the only way to beat the big Romulan ship. It also makes the Undiscovered Country reenactment very different when you spot the distortion and blow up Chang before he gets through his monologue.

I love this game. I played the hell out of the post-campaign combat sim. I never encountered many bugs. The one I do remember and found the most annoying is that both the Federation and Klingon Dreadnaughts had these "wave motion guns"; huge direct-fire energy weapons that did massive damage. The Federation's worked fine, but the Klingon ship's weapon never did anything.
I think the main disappointment for me is that, like all "playing the 'bad guy' " games, you just end up fighting yourselves. The campaign against the Federation is just training simulations. I wish that game makers would be brave enough to say screw it to canon and just take the games in different directions to complement the side that the player is playing for.
There are some cool easter eggs, too, in free exploration. If you go to Jupiter, you can find a literal flying saucer with a couple green bug-eyed aliens in the cockpit. It's fast and tough, but can be destroyed. There is also a small planetoid named Mingo, and if you go there, you can encounter the war-rocket Ajax from the 1980 Flash Gordon movie.

the thing I hated about this game on newer systems, the background "blinks", or worse, right at the first mission, you lose right at the start (forgot how).....right up there with starfleet academy when you have a miranda and a baddie pummels you until you lose a nacelle (tested that one on a windows 7, game goes too fast even on the "destroy mines" mission, like you have to be The Flash to taken them out)
