Perhaps if I possessed the intellect or grammatical prowess to thoroughly pick apart and examine the bit in its entirety, I would be a better man and a better-educated individual. The second subversion comes from the expectation thereof that the joke will involve personified animals speaking English as a human would in such a situation, which is succinctly refuted by the whale turning to the second whale with a solid minute of whale calls. At this point, the joke is expected to be finished, and could have been followed by a bow and a yielding of the floor. Instead, the audience's expectations are subverted a THIRD time, as the second whale enters the joke, likely to continue with more whale calls, as is expected from whales. The fourth, and final subversion comes from the second whale speaking in perfect English, stating outright that the first whale was not speaking in calls, but rather had been so overserved by the bartender that his cognitive and linguistic functions had been reduced to nothing, turning what could have been a coherent statement into a shouting, warbling mess.
