    I have same laptop Acer Aspire E15 E5-576g-59AB. I am planning to make the SSD as the primary. What M.2 SSD Drive are compatible to my laptop? Which is better Kingston NV2 Pcle 4.0 NVMe m.2 or Western Digital SN570m.2 Pcle Gen 3?

    Nice to see a video of how you clone the drive using free software.

    • @JodyBruchon
      @JodyBruchon  2 года назад +6

      I might do that, but the big issue is that I actually clone everything by hand. Quite literally:
      # dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sda count=64
      # hdparm -z /dev/sda
      # gdisk /dev/sda
      ...edit GPT partition sizes in gdisk here, next steps assume partition 4 is Windows system, 3 is "MS Reserved" and thus empty...
      # sgdisk -u 4:$(sgdisk -i 4 /dev/sdb | grep un | cut -d\ -f4) /dev/sda
      # cat /dev/sdb1 >/dev/sda1
      # cat /dev/sdb2 > /dev/sda2
      # ntfsresize /dev/sdb4 -fi
      ...get suggested resize size, round up to nearest gigabyte or up to ~10G less than new drive's size...
      # ntfsresize /dev/sdb4 -fns 100G
      ...if successful and no apparent warnings...
      # ntfsresize /dev/sdb4 -fs 100G
      # ntfsclone --rescue -fO /dev/sda4 /dev/sdb4
      # yes | ntfsresize -f /dev/sda4
      ...restore source filesystem size as well...
      # yes | ntfsresize -f /dev/sdb4
      Some of it changes depending on MBR or GPT, sizing issues, partition number differences, etc. but that's how I personally do it. Someone else who isn't insane like me would probably use Gparted.

      Did you initialize and format the disk? Right-click the Start button (Windows 8 and up) and go to Disk Management. You can see the empty disk there and initialize and format it. Don't format any disks you already have and want to keep!

    • @JodyBruchon
      @JodyBruchon  Год назад +1

      There are several possibilities. One is that you've put the wrong kind in the slot. M.2 slots can be PCI Express, SATA, or both. If you install a PCIe SSD in a M.2 slot that only has SATA, it won't show up. Same thing for a SATA SSD in a PCIe-only M.2 slot.
