    I think the discrepancy you're seeing in the crowdfunding question could be that more people have found the hobby in the last few years, but it's likely that the people who are watching your content (and therefore answering this poll) are deeper into the hobby for longer, meaning that they're becoming burnt out on crowdfunding after the initial excitement has worn off. I've only been deep in the hobby since 2019 and absolutely decreased my crowdfunding spending as of last summer. Also, even though I'm backing fewer games, the ones I'm backing are much more expensive than what I backed when I first joined the hobby, and I wouldn't be surprised to see others having similar experiences.
    Fun video idea, Alex! Now off to fill out the new poll.

      @buddyberglund Месяц назад +3

      I came here to say basically this exact thing. More people around the world getting into tabletop crowdfunding, combined with the fact that costs per game seem to be immensely increasing, means the dollar amounts going up, while each individual is potentially backing fewer things. Now, your question was whether people were backing more or [fewer] games on crowdfunding as opposed to "are you spending more or less MONEY on backing games than you used to?" which may have been a very different set of answers.

    • @timrusk1916
      @timrusk1916 Месяц назад +1

      I have had a very similar experience. Got into the hobby about 4 years ago, backed/bought a bunch of games, ran out of space and now I have to be much more selective on what I get.
      About a year ago I was down under 10 I played games but since moving and getting lots of crowdfunding deliveries, I am very far behind, probably 40+.
      One of the these that holds me back from playing unopened games is the time to punch and organize it. Combined with the fact that very few games are organizable/playable from the standard box without spending more on inserts

    • @morgaknightgames
      @morgaknightgames Месяц назад

      @@timrusk1916 Inserts are my favorite way to upgrade my games. I hate the "dump everything in a well" default so many come with. If I spend $ on an insert, I'm usually doing that instead of buying a new game as well.

    I too am at the “Backing fewer games” bracket. I’m a long time viewer and backer, and I’ve backed lots of games over the years. And now I just have enough… I’m over the FOMO, and am fine just getting whatever hits retail (or not). But, interestingly, the less I back, the MORE I watch your channel. Why? I think because I just want to keep feeling part of it and share the fun. I still want to know what’s happening, I just don’t feel the need to put actual money into it. So I follow much fewer campaigns, but that just means I have more time to watch your videos :)

    My favorite people who do playthroughs are Shaggi from Totally Tabled and Colin, formerly of OSCS. They do a create job of cutting out the fat with a ton of editing and closeups, so it's a great stream-lined experience. Both are entirely filmed from a top-down angle, but their personalities still manage to come through.
    One of these days, I will find out what Shaggi looks like. I don't think I've ever seen him on camera.

    Just a suggestion, maybe at one time you could do a series of questions with regards to campaign games. Do you prefer/play campaign games - do you specifically avoid them/seek them out, preferred campaign length (scenario's or hours), importance of campaign replayability (e.g. I don't care about replaying, I just want one good long campaign vs I want shorter campaigns that add variability), narrative significance in a campaign game, Importance of theme (not necessarily related to campaign games though), or more generic: most important elements in a campaign game (narrative, theme, mechanics), solo vs multiplayer playing of campaign games, should a campaign game provide one-shots as well (primal as a recent example), are campaign and legacy synergic...just spitballing a bit :-).
    Second suggestion is a more deep-dive in crowdfunding behaviour: do you back a lot at low level tiers or less games but all-in. How many games do you back a year/month, do you back multiple games of the same creator only sequentially or also in parallel, do you back first time designer or major companies etc
    Very interesting video by the way!

    Question: what do you do when a new game comes in? Answers: 1. keep it in shrink for as long as possible.(1.5 and tos it on the unplayed pile - 1.6 and put it in a the appropriate priority shelf) 2. Unwrap it asap. 3 unwrap it and punch out everything asap. 4. The above and setup it up with the rules to get a better idea of the game. Ofcours change the answers however you like. In the ewrly days I used to be 3. But as i got more and more unlayed games it became 1.6. might be intersting if possible to make it so people also have to say in this question how many unplayed games they have.

    I think your external “internal” monologue about backing games and overall financial success not lining up is because you’re measuring two different things. The backer count (more accurately, returning backer count) is declining but the cost per pledge is increasing.
    I think a good question but a very hard to measure question would be about “returning backers” vs “first time backers” vs “one-and- done because I’m here for the IP” backers.

    The other issue with sweet spot for game length is that our perception of the "sweet spot" likely depends on our typical player count. i tend to play with 3-4 players, so I picked 120-180, as that tends to be the length of a mid weight thinky euro with 3-4 players. But if I were playing a two player game, I wouldn't typically want the game to run for 2-3 hours.

    I used to be really good about playing new games within a couple weeks of getting them, and so I stayed around 0 unplayed games. I am currently hanging around 15-20... I had been hanging between 25-30 prior to starting a series on my channel of going over games I played for the first time in the previous month and giving my first impressions of those games which has encouraged me to get more new games to the table to keep putting a bigger dent into the unplayed games than new games coming in.

    On the new questions, for the one about unplayed games, shouldn't the middle answer be "NO, if you've played a physical copy?" since I'm assuming the point of the answer is that it would NOT count as an unplayed game, if you've played a physical copy, as opposed to YES, it would still count as unplayed, even if you played a physical copy somewhere else? Or maybe you should have both of those options... "No, playing another physical copy would count" and "Yes, it doesn't matter if you've played another physical copy, YOUR copy is still unplayed"

    I think question 5 is totally subjective to selection bias-you and your audience are further along in their crowdfunding journey, meaning now more selective about what they back. But there are still more people entering the hobby than leaving, so the numbers continue to go up even though a lot of the first couple waves are themselves backing less.

    For how often do you play board games a month - I decided to exclude BGA/online plays and went with physical plays only since I wasn't sure. I think hours in additional to those questions might have given a clearer result. With Spirit Island as my top game I still only play it a few times a year due to insane game length from me being too stubborn to play solo with less than 6 spirit game. You also may have game days where you spend most of the day playing so your day count is at 1, but you may play more than somebody who does party games a few days a week.

    I aim to have 0 unplayed, so whenever I buy games I work to get them to the table before getting more. I don't want to have games just collecting dust. I also aim to get my games played on a yearly basis.
    With playthrough videos, while the people involved can elevate the experience, I care more about the quality of gameplay. It's essentially my main form of research. The more the video allows me to follow it, the more I like it, and I also prefer if the creator is more decisive with their moves. It always frustrates me if going through their options they talk themselves out of good moves. I want to follow the game and I want the moves done in the game to make sense to me.
    I live in a country which is pretty disadvantaged in crowdfunding, it's often in the higher categories for shipping, and I have to pay import taxes and fees on top of what I pay in crowdfunding. So I don't really do much direct backing of crowdfunding campaigns (I did do some backing a couple of years ago, but I slowed down on it even before the pandemic), I now actively try to avoid it unless it really is the only good way to get the game, and even then I try to find indirect solutions, like checking if a retailer I like is pledging and pre-ordering it from them. But even with that I don't do it much anymore.

    I'll give my answers to this poll too, but i am giving a DISCLAIMER over here: for some of the answers i'll probably give a 0, because i dont have a proper place to live and play board games at this moment or to gather a party for it. But i am working to have a place for board games party.
    For the expansions i think there are 2 ways you can see them- 1 is from perspective of "is the main box getting too big?" ala Marvel Zombies where you cannot put ALL fan favorites under 1 roof and 2nd is "how we can expand, improve and enrich the main game while being truthful to the ip?" ala The Witcher Old World.
    I follow watch content creators and some i am watching more, some i am watching less.

    For the kickstarter question, I am in the camp of "backing more than before". For me, that simply represents that I think there are more great games that are coming to kickstarter. I feel like I am being MORE selective of what i back on kickstarter (turning down more and more of what I see), but the result is that I went from backing 1-2 projects a year in 2017-2020 to 5-8 in 2022 and 2023.

    The answer to your contradiction of people spending less, but overall dollars going up is possibly that more people are backing. So individuals are spending less, but crowdfunding dollars are going up as more people get into crowdfunding. And the reason individual campaigns aren't seeing as many backers as they used to might be because there are more campaigns nowadays? You can probably verify this if you have data on total number of campaigns and total number of backers.

    This is long and I apologize...
    At first, I your response to the question: "Why do you watch play through videos?" had me thinking that I had a different interpretation of this question and answer. Or maybe just a different spin on it. But then as you went on, I think we WERE on the same page, but that the multiple choice answers given were not. It feels like maybe the question should have been: "When you watch play through videos, do you want to see: a) just the game, b) both the game and the player(s) experiencing the game, or c) mostly just the people playing.
    In this case, I am generally looking for an idea of the game play. I don't really care WHO is playing, meaning who the content creator is. That said, I want to see the game played as well as the players as they react to playing the game.
    So my answer was "couldn't care less..." but that doesn't mean I just want to see a pair of hands the whole time moving pieces around or holding cards. In fact, I intentionally don't watch those types of play throughs because I find them extremely boring.
    I'm in the camp of, I like seeing your face AND the game. (The Brothers Murph do the well).

    If more money is in crowdfunding and people are backing less, that must mean more people are entering the hobby.

    Could you clarify something regarding the new poll? Specifically regarding the first two questions regarding how many times you play your favorite game and how many days per week you play board games. How would you define “play board games” if most of my plays of my favorite game are online and asynchronous and can therefore take a few days or even a week to complete, even although I am taking several turns per day…

      Oooh... instinctively I would answer that taking a turn doesn't count but if you're spending 30+ minutes playing that counts, even if spread out.

    My initial reaction to the idea that someone would say "I dont want to see your face in a playthrough" was shock! It seems so insulting to not look the person in the eye at least once if they are working to provide me that entertainment. But then I thought of Colin and Bairnt from "Meet Me at the Table". I absolutely love their personalities but they almost never show their faces and I'm ok with that. I guess, talking through it, if I like the content then I'm ok with however the creator chooses to present themselves. It's the creators personality and creativity that is being showcased and they have every right to "put a face to a name" so to speak.

    Building off of how many unplayed games… what percent/fraction of your collection is played vs unplayed?
    I own more unplayed than played personally because no one ever wants to play in my game group

    I think the ranges are too big. Perhaps influenced by your own perception as a hardcore gamer and now as someone who does this as his job. A more granular measure would be even more useful. Also another thing i would recommend is to ask precursor context questions to compare later questions against. For example, before the question regarding how many unplayed games do you have, it could be useful to ask how many games do you own?
    Just my very quick 2 cents as a data analyst. 😊

    I’m curious to hear what should your collection:games played a year ratio be? For example, I own about 100 games & played just under 500 games last year so my ratio would’ve been around 4.8 but I think the lowest id want it to be is 5.0 and I want it to be closer to 10!

    For how often you play a favorite game in a year, would an average suffice or are you looking for "in the last year." My favorite game has not been played in over a year, but does have a decent average over the last 4 years we have been playing it.

    For the playthrough video question, I think your survey is gonna be biased because it's mostly answered by people subscribed to your channel that are already here for you. The comments of people wanting less of your face are probably people who google the game specifically and watch videos of that game, but aren't interested in sticking around.
    For my own perspective, when I want to see if a game interests me, I will look for 2 types of videos for different purposes: reviews and gameplay. For reviews, I want the personal aspect, the opinions, etc. But for gameplay, I want to see the game being played in a similar way than I'll see it played on my own table, without someone injecting personal comments.

    If every, what makes your favorite game not your favorite game anymore? A: A better game came out that does everything better. B: I played it too many times and burned out. C: Someone ruined the game for me (abused a system or found a strategy that broke the game). D: My taste in games has changed.

    0 unplayed games involves discipline. Don't buy a game unless you have a plan to get it played. When a game comes through my door I will immediately invite people to find a time to play it.

    Gosh, having 20 unplayed games in a collection boggles my mind as much as having 0 unplayed games in a collection boggles yours. The only reason I have 5 unplayed games right now is because they are brand new this week and I haven't had a chance to open and play any of them yet. If I had 20 unplayed games that would mean a third of my collection had never been played which would be an absurd percentage. I think it would be interesting to ask this question again, but add a follow-up question regarding what % of games that is. It would put the answers into a little more perspective. Someone with a collection of 200 games with only 5% unplayed is 10 games, which seems fairly reasonable. Someone with 200 games with 50 unplayed (25%) seems unreasonable. At that point you've got a problem and your buying is out of control.
    I assume there's more money going into Crowdfunding and more campaigns not doing quite as well as they used to because there are more campaigns so the money is spread out more thinly?
    My answer was that I spend more money on Crowdfunding than I used to a year ago, but the missing perspective you have from my answer is that I'm pretty new to board gaming, I got into the hobby about 2-3 years ago. I didn't start taking any risks on crowdfunded projects until my game collection grew a bit and I started to discover more about the board game community. I think I've pledged for about 1 game per month so far this year and I do feel like I need to cut back. It isn't a sustainable practice and it's only a matter of time until I get burned and lose $100 on a project that fails to deliver. I want to focus more on getting more affordable games from retail stores and I would prefer to not be encouraging all the FOMO practices that crowdfunding sprouts. I wait to put in an order of $150 worth of games to get free shipping from back East, and crowdfunding always has hidden costs of taxes, shipping, and sometimes even duties too. So whilst you convince yourself to pay the pledge amount, it's too easy to forget that you're going to be paying another $30-50 in other costs before you actually get the game, and most campaigns don't even make it clear what currency their listed shipping costs are in so you have to assume it's in USD and google the conversion rate. I do wish they'd explicitly state on their graphs what currency they're using because the dollar sign is a symbol which is not exclusive to the USD.
    This was a really fun video, my first time coming across this series of yours. I really enjoyed answering the little survey and thoroughly enjoyed listening to your discussion of the answers.
    I personally think it would be better for you to garner more participants in the surveys if you presented the new questions first and then moved into the answers for the past one.
    I was surprised at the number of channels you had listed which I've never heard of before (I'd heard of 3 on your list), and then you were missing most of the ones I watch regularly. No Rolls Barred, Actualol, Rahdo, 3 Minute Board Games, Board Game Sanctuary, Before you Play, Watch it Played, The Broken Meeple. Ohhh, I just got to the part where you said that some of the channels are on Tic Toc and Instagram so of course I've never come across them because I don't use either of those sites, heh.
