  • From the "A Cowboy in London" tape, live 1983. Waylon sing that bitter/sweet classic ballad.
Here the song is played without the studio strings but is enriched by Mooney'steel guitar.

Dang he knew how to captive a audience... He was and still is a legend. No one can replicate him. They try tho... But they can't, because he didn't copy anyone. And he carried a big burden. Most of the songs weren't about women. It was deeper. He had a way of writing about things, so beautiful

I first heard Waylon singing at J D's in Scottsdale, Ariz. in the early 1960's. My husband and I went there dancing. He was then, and was up until he died , the very best voice out there in country music because he didn't have that corny twang like so many had. He had a deep resonant melodious voice that was so distinct. He could sing different types of music, not just country. What a treasure he was to listen to! For instance, the song " Wild Ones" and " Endangered Species." They had that rock country sound. He was and still is, my favorite country singer. There are none that can come close to him. Don Williams came close, but was not as good as Waylon. !!!!!!

I've only seen Waylon once -- way way back when I saw his name on a marquee at the River Bottom in Tempe, Arizona... must have been 1965 or 66 or so. My husband and I were underage (less than 21) and university students, but since we were married, we were allowed into clubs with live entertainment that served alcohol; we drank soft drinks but were stunned by Waylon, he sat on a stool in a corner and playing an acoustic guitar -- no band. His voice was SO good. AMAZING.

This is exactly why Waylon will always be the best country music ever had. He could go from his big upbeat numbers and really rock it out and then go to this. It all came from the heart and the music meant everything. Thank goodness country music will always have Waylon, cos we sure as hell ain't got a whole lot out there right now.
    Gone, but never forgotten.

It literally makes me sick that radio turned it's back on people like Waylon. A whole generation wasn't exposed to Waylon in the same way that we were because radio threw him in the garbage. In the early 90's Garth Brooks and the young generation came in and bumped Waylon off to the side... I don't know about you but I'd rather hear Waylon than Garth Brooks. Waylon was still releasing great recordings all through the 90's and radio didn't play a damn one of em'. Very sad and a crying shame!

I always have to listen to this late in an evening after my wife and two pugs hit the hay. I used to play this song when she was around, and one night she said “I know I shouldn’t ask but who was she?” I said, “I just like this song and there is no “she”; you’re my girl”, but I don’t think you can play this song around your lover. They can’t believe you aren’t thinking of someone from your past. What a great song performed by a really cool guy. I miss Waylon, come to think of it, maybe I’m dreaming my dreams of his music.

They all did beautiful takes and maybe hit the notes more beautifully, but Waylon didn't need strings or a american idol voice, cause he sang it with just what anybody needs and what music today is missing, the essence of the soul.

This was Waylon at his serious side, he liked to joke and cut up I think this song and Belle of the ball was Waylon's favorite, I got to see Waylon in Hazard Kentucky way back in 1984 he did a concert at the football field and it was completely sold out it was so crowded there people were shoulder to shoulder. When the city officials from Hazard contacted Waylon about coming there he told them that the only way that he would do a concert there was if they paid him cash and that's exactly what they did, my ticket was $12 and there had to be 1500 to 2000 people there maybe more, when Waylon's bus pulled up and parked his band got first Waylon was the last to get off he went straight to the stage got his Waylon fender stratocaster strapped it around his neck and started jamming the first song he did was I've always been crazy and the crowd was going absolutely wild, he did about 10 to 12 song's and left the stage went straight to his bus were a man in a fancy suit handed him a bank bag he took the bag and got on his bus and they pulled away, his show was the best I had ever seen, I was 22 at the time and that was definitely a highlight in my young life, I kept that ticket stub for years but somewhere along my moving from place to place it got lost, Waylon was one of a kind and he did exactly what he was born to do and he was the very best at it, a true legend in country music and his songs and music will live forever. Keith Urban now has that famous Waylon fender stratocaster but the sound from it is nothing like when Waylon played it, I sure miss Waylon 🎸

I had better own up to joking with you Waylon fans - Sorry. I just like being bad sometimes !
Actually this song is so beautiful that Waylon takes full credit for writing it. It's one of the best. It doesn't really matter who sings it - its always good.
I'm not a flag waver either for any country - only for good music.

My first time to hear this song sung by Waylon. Im in a trance!I never felt like this before about any song. such feeling! He looks such a rough ordinary bloke! Love his songs.
