Stay WILD!
Just completed the South Downs Way with my dog. The only thing that weighed anything was my tent (a pop up which was attatched to my small pack) and sleeping bag. My pack, which I did not weigh, was light as I carried no food, no change of clothes (apart from underwear and socks, one of each). I intend to carry even less next time by ditching the tent and going with a bivvi bag and small tarp. I found it very easy to find shops at the end of each day for all I needed and made sure it was all eaten before setting off the next morning after wild camping the entire way. I took a poncho for rainy days and its super compact, super light, and super waterproof. Only other things that weighed anything were a phone charger (which was the biggest I could get and lasted for four days before it needed recharging, and my camera. I was lucky with the weather but I had all I needed, fleece, hat and gloves and a snook were used only once, my trousers were like yours. I failed the Ridgeway last year because I tried to take food and a huge tank of water attached to a converted golf trolley. Next half term I will do the Ridgeway again with the same set up I had for SDW, but no tent this time, wild camping the whole way. Biggest mistake this year was wearing boots that were not worn in properly, ouch. Had a great time which I know would have been half as much fun if I had not gone super light, and super cheap also. I met a man along the way, also with a dog, who started the walk carrying a 5 stone pack, he was much younger than me however, I'm 52. I would have been finished on the first day.
Loved your video and I look forward to watching more,

Can't believe you never had a response after that very long comment
Thanks for this, Chris. I'm planning to walk the South Downs next week. It'll be my first multi-day hike, and will be wild camping. So glad to read your comment as it is reassuring to know I'm not being overly optimistic with not intending to pack as much as Abbie. Johnny.
Watched the film of you walking the SDW and now having seen this packing list I'm all fired up and ready to walk it myself. Gonna start planning now so I' ready for mid summer. Thanks for your inspiring videos.
Thank you I am unable to walk but you do it for me, again my thanksDavid
Hi David, thank you for sharing. So glad youre enjoying these videos! Take care, Abbie
It is so cool to see what you pack in the uk. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Have a great time on the South Downs Way Abbie!
Best wishes,
Al
Loved it :) Whats next on your list?
I'd like to get over to the lakes again. My boys have never been. Coniston would be nice, show them Wild Cat Island.
I'm glad you enjoyed walking through my home county. You'll have passed many places I have fond memories of. In fact the dragon flame image in my avatar was taken on my first overnight canoe trip on the Arun, just downstream from Amberley where I think you'll have crossed.
Well done! :-)
Thank you Abbie. Great information, very well explained.
Keep up the good work.
And a warm Hello from Brighton
Xx
Thanks for watching :)
just bought the same pack, though I'm walking from the Ridgeway to Land's End. 250 miles, we'll be stopping at shops and campsites on the way so hoping it's big enough.
Thanks for these videos, I've been really enjoying them. Great job.
Thanks for the comment! :)
I enjoy your videos. If you ever come to the US, stock up on gear the you can fit in your luggage. So much cheaper here.
Hi! Great Vid but, I've just dumped all my old gear and gone UL! My Talon 44 fits all with ease.... Did spend £1200 on all the gear though! ouch! Go UL! I went from 11kg base weight to 4.9kg! Oh, bag in bags in bag plus cover? over kill.. Happy trails! Like to see some SDW on line! M
Good luck.
Welldone Abby. Goodluck with the walk. I am going over to Ultralight backpacking now.. Good to use the walks to burn some body fat.

How much have you got your kit down to?
13.8lb not including food and water. Will upload a vid in a couple of days. I have walked the Ridgeway 3 times now and in July a friend and myself will be walking it again, this time we aim to do it in less than 35 hours and will be going ultralight. The Ridgeway is local to me and is my "Testing ground"

Another great video Abbie :) I just did my 1st wild camp using the Osprey 48L. it's a great backpack as you said.. thanks for the inspiration. atb from Leeds
Sounds like great fun! Enjoy your next trip!
I thoroughly enjoyed this and I'm not even a hiker... yet
I think many of us would be interested in recommendations for clothes, footwear and equipment for someone just starting out day hiking in the UK. E.g. good value beginners kit.
Thank you. It's interesting to get a different view on rucsac packing. Most people would put their cooker and food above their clothes as they are used in that order. Do you never take a compass?
Good point! And yes, I did take a compass. An essential that I must have missed mentioning!!
Hi there. Great video thanks . I have just been looking at the Ridgeway as a friend passed the info on to me after doing the 2nd Keswick2Barrow walk this month. I have also just braved buying my first new O.S. map to try all of the Walks In Ancient Lakeland ( Robert Harris's book) so i shall be subscribing and looking for more inspiration from you Abbie. I have been fell walking for a number of years now but road/flatter walking is a relatively new ( 2 years) experience which i am liking and so is the torn cartilage in my knee :) Here's to the beautiful outdoors and enjoying as much of it as we can ! Any blister tips ?!
How much is the cost of all the things inside the packs?
Hi Abbie if you were going to buy just one sleeping bag for use in the UK for 3 seasons use; what would you buy? Thanks P
Another great video Abbie as always👍
Have you had any experiences with Ticks on your walks?
Hi Abbie
how many kilos your backpack has with everything inside?
Hi,
Would you recommend the SDW as a first National Trail to complete? I'm planning on doing it this summer if so.
Thanks!
I would recommend it, yes. I would simply say, take your time, plan sorter days, and have fun. :)
Interesting what you do. Do you know what weight you carry. Love what you do.
Have you considered wild edibles to supplement your nutrition? Nettles (before they flower), dock and dandelion are quite abundant and difficult to confuse with other things.
Love the video, I'd like to walk the South Downs way this year, although it'd be my first long distance walk alone!
Thats a great suggestion. I tend to pick berries as I walk along, but never really thought of actually making something. I like this idea...
I've seen into the wild so I won't be doing it !
Abbie, I'm not sure whether it's due to RUclips's bandwidth limits or other issues with streaming video from their site, but your beautiful, full HD video usually doesn't stream well here. One either has to reduce the resolution and/or suffer with endless lag as the video buffers. I wonder if you'd ever thought of making the videos available for download so we could watch without these troubles? I'd be willing to tie your bootlaces in return for this privilege. 😝
Hi Tyrion, thanks for following and the comment. Im not sure what it would be causing that but they all seem okay my end. I have had a few people email in asking for DVDs of the longer films so maybe I will explore that more. Many thanks and stay wild, Abbie
Do you need to eat so much carbs/Sugar?
Abbie, how much does your packed pack weight?
Hi, around 18-20kg with full camera gear. Thanks for the question.
