- Watch this video to learn how to install a Contender hammer spring. This is normally a very difficult task but with years of trial and error I've perfected the process as demonstrated in the video. Let me know if this helps and if you like the video be sure to let us know and subscribe.
Tips:
-For best quality video change your settings to HD video
-Wear Glasses the spring is under a lot of tension.
-A vise and jaw pads really help, I'd hate to try this without. Be sure you clamp the frame closer to the breech, lining up the sides of the frame where the sides are supported. My liners are soft enough it shouldn't be a concern but firm jaw liners could crush the sides if over tightened.
-I didn't demonstrate in the video, CLEAN everything before reinstalling. I use a slight amount of gun oil on the assembly pin.
-When removing the hammer, put your hand over the back of the frame the spring is under a lot of tension and when you back out the punch will go flying on you.
You Need:
Contender hammer spring from Bellmtcs available single, 5 pack or 25 pack.
3/32 Pin Punch
3/16 pin punch
Flat blade screw driver above the width of the hammer cavity.
Small jeweler type hammer
Vise with jaw liners
Thank you for the video. I just cleaned out my firing pins and needed a refresher course on which which way the spring goes.
I had never changed out a Contender Hammer before, but thanks to the guidelines of this video, 20 minutes later it was done. Big thing is manipulating the hammer around when reinserting the hammer pin and don't force it. When its lined up right the pin will slide in with very little tapping from a small hammer
It's been a long time since we have had an instructional video (8 years), they are vauluable and appreciated, please do more.
This video was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Here's an update that you deserve. I received your spring today and it went in slick as snot. My Contender is now as good as new. Shipping was really fast!
PS - I should have asked you to paint my spring, lol!
You skip way too much. Where does the rounded nose of the hammer spring rest against? How did you place it in there? Do you assemble the hammer and spring as a unit? My Contender is apart now, I've wasted an hour and I am going to go cut firewood and leave this until I calm down.
Thanks for the video. My hammer spring just broke a few minutes ago, and I ordered one from you.
I plan to order your spring kit to see if it cures the light strikes I’ve been getting. I do wish you would have used a tripod and better lighting. This way you could have shown the orientation of the spring and the complete install. Written instructions were a nice bonus.
I need help they brought me one to put spring but how does spring go on the hammer
I have a Thompson Contender. Last time after 6 shots the hammer spring broke loose. It has a metal crack. Where can I get a new hammer spring? I live in the Netherlands in Europe.
use a slave pin , instal spring into hammer then slide into frame instal hammer pin, no need to fight with screw driver,
gun smith for thirty years use a slave pin were ever possible , no more tired fingers
Help Please! I have a Contender with the super 14 barrel in 223 and today when I shot it the ported compensator came off. How do I reattach it or does it require a gunsmith to do it?
It is probably a good video. Unfortunately his hands block the light so it is imporssible to see where he is putting the screwdriver.
How do you get the tension on the spring?
You guys still in business? Can’t access your website
