This man is both sarcasm , humour, interesting and really really relatable. He also uploads a lot unlike other RUclips channels that do once a month. Keep it up :D
Nice to see your ant experience along with your running commentary and self deprecating humor. Good mix and quite entertaining. You might find the 1960s cartoon "The ant and the aardvark" to be funny.
Wow those ants *are* actually really smart. I saw them moving the sand in the tube to make room for the fly and thought that was pretty cool, but not insane. And then the ants decided to store their seeds in a dry place so they didnt mold or grow and my mind is blown.
After watching most of your videos, RUclips thinks that i want to se other channels with insects, but no. Only want to se this guy, so cool, fun, fairly knowledgeable and down to earth👌😆
Just wanted to say you’re the only RUclipsr who’s videos I like upon opening. Don’t need to see it to judge I know it’s gonna be great as always. And as always, another banger!
My favourite biologist. As always...perfect design of terrarium. So thoughtful. 😂 you doing fantastic job. Make some effort and do your videos more often.
You can also put the cotton inside of the sugarwater tube and put the tube in the arena or connect it to the arena. Also messor barbarus colonies get quite big fast so in a year or so you will probably need to upgrade your setup, just a little info i did not know as i got a colony of them.
@@HomemadeEcosystems i had a similar arena for mine and i expandet it with a bigger one after a year. The nest looks better than mine, i had mine in a 20x20x1cm upright glass nest which was not so optimal, they removed all of the sand and it was at one point only the ant colony filling it up 😄
You guys seem to like ants soooo........ 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜 Disclaimer: As you can clearly see in the video, I'm an idiot and not an expert at all so if you are going to get an animal/ants always do your own research:). Harvester ants ftw! They never stop working. You should get a lot of good footage. Also, need to add reverb or an echo to "The Arena" at 1:11. Thanks for the awesome video!
Not sure why I'm here or how I got to your channel, but you're hysterical. The youtube algorithm did good work for me this morning. Thanks for the laughs and for making my cup of coffee better! Subscribed!
Just found your channel last night but I watched atleast 6 hours worth of your videos super entertaining to watch and also i want to start a eco system now
You received a ant colony after ordering one online?? Woah. That's insane. I never would have thought you would get that! 2:17 That's what he said. It's really cool to see how these ants work together and move sand grains in order to get food and not grow the seeds. Ants are crazy. I would love to see more of this!
messor barbarus are a great species but id recommend only feeding them seeds until about 50-60 workers and then start feeding them protein they do not need sugars as they get that from the seeds.
Awesome video although I’ve kept all my ants in the light in my opinion they don’t like vibrations so for filming purposes maybe try putting a small towel underneath the tube to lessen vibrations and keep them in the light!
Yay, you did end up getting a colony of Messor! I hope they grow soon! Also I feel dumber than my ants all the time, it’s a part of the ant-keeping hobby I guess
The harvester ants were initially wary of the competent stone placement in the arena. They may be able to drag a dead mosquito into a sandy test tube, but could any or all of them situate a stone with such precision and verve. This is what separates humans from the insect world. That and our absence of mandibles.
okay. I am an antkeeper btw with i think around 16 species and also have messor barbarus so if you would have questions (probably not) you can ask them.@@HomemadeEcosystems
It is refreshing to have a youtuber that doesnt yell at me.
Very correct 👍
No bells or other bullshit either. :)
Bro only speaks facts 🗣️
He sounds like half of his soul has left already. Which is utterly relatable

Your welcome
Hi
Hello
May Bob live a long and good life!
She may
Or she wont
Prob dead by now, but don’t worry, there are more bobs to come
Im pretty sure they were moving the sand into the tube because most harvester ants have bad grip, so they were making it easier to walk.
That would be even smarter
that second rock really made the differnce
Agreed!
Wow those ants *are* actually really smart. I saw them moving the sand in the tube to make room for the fly and thought that was pretty cool, but not insane. And then the ants decided to store their seeds in a dry place so they didnt mold or grow and my mind is blown.
my tip for longer videos: show some of updates of other, already existing projects.

Glad you like it prison Mike!
@@HomemadeEcosystems thanks for the great entertainment, was hooked from the first video I found of your the rollypolly vid.
I could literally watch these ant videos forever.
Real I been watching his ant vids all day
I love your dry humor reminds me of loved one who’s passed away ..videos are great to keep it up
I'm sorry for your loss! Glad the video helped a bit!
That 3rd rock really made that terrarium go from a 3 to a 9,000! How do you come up with the ideas for hardscaping your terrariums? Amazing my man! 😉
🤣 the ideas just come to me
Content like this is so cool, calm, funny without yelling and very enjoyable overhaul
Keep up the (very) good work !

first time seeing a professional beeing that professional. thanks for that experience
messor barbarus are a great species but id recommend only feeding them seeds until about 50-60 workers and then start feeding them protein they do not need sugars as they get that from the seeds.
you will also need to hibernate them soon
Thanks for the tips! Yep I'm hibernating them soon like my Lasius colony. Putting them in around 15°C should do it right?
@@HomemadeEcosystems 15c will be fine for the barbarus but lasius niger need 8-5c to hibernate
2:15 tip: water makes em very slippery and easy to fit. Dry they are rubbery and got grip

You inspired me to name my friends in the aquarium. They are Heinz. Heinz say hello and thankyou!

OMG, I have an aunt named Bob!! What are the odds? 😊
I love Messor barbarus,I have 3 colonies of then, and I am planing to keep Messor structor ant capitatus

And you probably know it all happened because they need like a week to adjust, - Because pheromones.

2:17 that was sus
very nice but i just wanna say messor barbarus doesn't take sugars usually and lots of seeds.
Thanks! I wanted to give them some sugar that was available fast so they had energy to process the seeds.
okay. I am an antkeeper btw with i think around 16 species and also have messor barbarus so if you would have questions (probably not) you can ask them.@@HomemadeEcosystems
I think u did a big mistake with placing sand to arena bc the messors are movin the sands to the tube so ur colony will be killed by the mites
There is no sand in the testtube itself. And what mites? The ants need some kind of substrate in the arena.
Thank you for showing us how dumb we are compared to ants!!! Love your channel and personality!
Man of biology 🎩
What are the updates on the first ant colony?
Not much happened since my latest video and they are about to go into hibernation so there wont be a lot going on with them in the next few months 😁
@@HomemadeEcosystems willing to see them probably at the beginning of March fresh and full 😁
