  • I recently got a Louis Electric KR12 amp whose guts had been painted red. Needless to say, I was a bit peeved, so I called the owner of the company and asked him why.

    I have a person in my life who insists on texting, even when it's a very important conversation! I just cannot get through to this person that, there's just SO MUCH that doesn't come through via text message! You cannot determine emotions behind a text for one..... Anyway, I just refuse to talk to them via text. I'll let them send me five page texts and I don't even read them. CALL ME if you want to talk about something important.
    Anyway, I had to share this when I heard you guys talking about texting.

    • @k9er233
      @k9er233 Год назад

      So true! The "art of the conversation" seems to be nearly lost since the invention of the text. In the 90's I started to notice what I have called "talk-atters" showing up more and more. Those people who believe in the one-sided "conversation", where even if you do get a small window to actually speak, you can see their eyes sort of glaze over after you have said a few words, knowing that they are not listening to what you have to say and only thin ing about what they are going to say next. The text has allowed them to flourish ever since, so that they can "talk-at" you, not actually engage in a legitimate conversation.

    core stack lamination? apparently alternating the lamination stack can reduce flux leakage and iron loss?
    can someone elaborate on this process further? what do they mean when they say:
    "Transformer core laminations are usually stacked alternately to each other to produce an overlapping joint with more lamination pairs being added to make up the correct core thickness"
    do they mean that if the plate is made of 3-4 pieces sorta like a square figure 8, when you lay down the next layer you do it in a fashion so the seams or joints are in a different spot right?
    trying to visualize this in my head, so looking at a transformer if its a good one you never see seam or joint in the same place on any given 2 layers? or? alternate the seams? fugg I dunno never heard of this before be nice to know what to look for in more quality transformers, reduced leakage and iron loss is a good thing right? any care to elaborate on why?
    TY
    not only was Gatton pure genius on guitar he was a car guy too!
    I'd put danny right up there with Terry Kath, the Godzilla Twinns...
    Louis still making amps? looks like he gets decent money for his work? I am in the market for a high gain 2-3 stage KT88 style amp, 50/60/100 watt or so, 40 prolly work with a cab extension.., somewhere in the arena of a Soldano or Sound City but FFS no freakin PCB boards or any of that crap..
    really chuffs me Soldano sells his company then the folks who bought it went cheapomatic but upped the price, $4000 for a SLO 100 but get this, the tube sockets are integrated, like that Mesa, and the component board is PCB, caps and what not soldered to a PCB board as opposed to using wire! UNREAL
    if I've learned anything from this channel its that GC throws a lot of good gear away and PCB board amps are shyt for diagnosis and when the warranty expires, therefore should be avoided at all costs.. if its not hand wired with eyelet boards and good ceramic sockets and wiring, quality caps and resistors along with quality transformers and tubes its not worth that kind of money to me, period.. not to me, typically when these components tire out is right around the time the warranty expires, I don't play that game..
    I've watched you work on too much stuff to know for good valve AMPs PCB is junk, and it's easy to see why especially when it burns, or has very small contact area so the connection is fragile due to the solder not having anything to grab onto.. then working on em... yukk!
    I researched your thoughts on this and came to the same conclusion, it's just not good in tube amps, and the money saved isn't worth duping a loyal customer base... don't care if soldano still designs amps for the Asians or not, I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot poll..
    rather pay the $1400 or so build my own at that amp class, come home with a quality 57 custom copy I know is right.. hale they'll put one together for around $300 extra..
    you ever thought about putting kits together for customers, put your own spin on em? "Guitologist Amps" hey, Mikey likes it!

      Pretty much all transformers use laminations in the core and what they are referring is just how they construct it so that they can wrap the copper wire coils around the core. Transformers use laminations because it reduces eddy current losses which reduce the efficiency. If you have a transformer with a solid iron core, there will be a large circulating current inside the core due to the magnetic field which is called the eddy current and this reduces the efficiency. Making the core out of laminated sheets reduces the amount of eddy currents induced in the core since the sheets have higher resistance especially with the insulation between sheets. Pretty much every transformer in the past hundred years is made like that because they found out early on that it reduces the eddy current losses. Reducing losses in the iron is a good thing. The different core constructions are used for different types of transformers for different purposes.
      As for PCBs in amps, it really doesn’t matter so long as it is a good quality PCB. In fact, PCBs will be better than hand wiring as far as reducing RF interference and noise from power lines as well as reducing signal loss and having shorter connections. The wires in point-to-point designs will much more easily pick up any radiated or conducted noise and interference and the soldered connections can fail more easily. The ground plane in the PCB helps to shield from noise and also it is overall much cleaner and more streamlined with better connections, if the PCB is well designed and good quality with good wide copper traces and pads. If it is a crappy PCB with a poor design then of course it’s not good. Another problem is if the copper traces are weak and too thin and can easily raise off the PCB or break due to heat.
      But these issues only happen if they use a poor quality PCB or a bad design that puts thin traces near things that get hot. So long as the PCB is a good design and is well laid out it will actually be better than hand wiring. Also, with power tubes it is generally better not to have them directly mounted to PCBs. A lot of lower wattage amps use EL84s that are directly mounted to PCBs and that causes an issue, again because the PCB gets hot and it damages traces. But again, if the PCB is well designed and uses good wide copper traces and is well made then it should not be a problem.
      So the problem with PCBs is just cheap low quality manufacturing or bad designs.
      They use PCBs for satellites and things that go into space which are subjected to much harsher conditions than any guitar amp would ever see, so of course a guitar amp using PCBs can be reliable and function without any problems, so long as the PCBs are not cheap crap from China.

    • @k9er233
      @k9er233 Год назад +1

      Absolutely agree with you about the PCB's and other shortcuts. PCB mounted pots and switches, not chassis mount? Who thought that was a good idea? For my money, eyelet boards, ceramics, and point to point wiring with quality components is worth the extra cost. The longevity regarding maintenance and and any needed repairs is worth a lot to me personally, especially when you factor in the heat produced by the tubes/valves.

    There was some idiot crap about painting stereo gear interiors to improve the sound... In every case, it actually degrades the performance due to added dielectric absorption. If moisture is a problem, there are clear conformal coatings specifically engineered to isolate from moisture, and not destroy component identification. At least he seems like a stand-up guy about dealing with it.

    • @rebelcat420
      @rebelcat420 3 года назад +1

      You can tell by the color and how it lays on there it’s not normal “paint”. This is a 2 part epoxy conformal coating that is good for limiting/mitigating high voltage tracking in low (480v), medium (4kv) and even high voltage breakers, transformers and other switchgear. Spent close to a decade working on this equipment and with this coating.
