The annual Raft Race in Hartlepool is part of the Carnival events, and normally brings a close to the summer proceedings.
Since its revival and a new lease of life, quite a few years ago, it has been held on the Fish Sands, with live music and festivities at the Pot House Pub, which over looks the race itself.
This year it was a packed event with 6 rafts taking to the start line, and hundreds and hundreds of happy spectators in the late summer sunshine.

I remember watching the raft race in either late 70's early 80's sat on the heugh (lower level staying dry whereas those on the top level were getting wet from the waves creashin into the side of the pier. Great times fond memories. Commented on here to help with the algorithm.
Yes it was great event back then, but I think this one was pretty good.
@@TheSilverFoxDoesStuff had an amazing turnout but how clear was that water. Many memories with dad and me, me climbing over those cages filled with bricks, (early sea defence) and after sitting down eating sandwiches me ripping me trousers when I got up. Walking down to the docks and seeing piles of rusting scrap metal, the empty shell of the warrior and going in the tunnels bottom of church street.
Ahhhhh memories. I was about 8 or 9ish years old, it's amazing at what I can remember from like 40 years ago....... After my 2 strokes I struggle to remember 40 mins ago.

Look at how clear the sea water is. Hopefully one day i will be back down to the headland where i was born and bred. I was born in 1955 in Penrith Street in a 2 up 2 down with my brothers and sisters with family all around us. I have noticed as i have got older families are spreading apart which is a sad thing to happen.
A lot of people, especially the younger ones, are wanting to move to the Headland now.
