Matthews made a sneaky low-key but really important defensive move that helped save a goal in the 3rd. Huge scrum around in the Leafs crease after Sammy made a save. The puck squirted out behind him from between his pads, Matthews tucked the puck back between Sammys pads and then he completely turtled before the play was called dead.
This is the play I thought was overlooked by a lot of people. He probably saved a goal right there.
Having the presence of mind to do that in that situation shows how quick he can make decisions under pressure.
Matthews entire defensive game is underrated and anyone who says he's one dimensional is just admitting they don't actually watch him
@@Washadamoak For sure. Normal (panic) instinct is to try and get the puck out of the crease but it could be intercepted and keeps the play alive. The calm rational play is to do what he did but it also takes A LOT of skill and puck control to safely tuck it in like that without screwing it up in a very fluid & dangerous situation.
Little details like that are what make him one of the best players in the game.
Noticed that one too, his defensive game is definitely underrated

Domi was flying and being a good facilitator for Matthews
he really was, he was not taking stupid penalties and was playing good, that’s what he needs to do
Tavares kept them alive all game. His hustle & leadership was showing all game. Matthews then said hold my beer

Domi is becoming the heart of the Leafs. He is the gritty player we need.
Matthews has really started to step up his physical game coming to the end of the season and its ramping up in the playoffs. I think he's finally sick of being called "soft" (despite having always played more physical than most top scorers) and he's still an offensive menace. Love to see it.
I was SO happy with the way the team played they looked so different from the Leafs a few years ago, throwing hits, making plays when needed, etc! One down, 15 more to glory!!! WOOHOO!!! GO LEAFS GO!!!

Agree, Tavaras wears the C for a reason. It's not just down to on ice performance. We focus on offence but it's a 200 foot game. The coaches see and hear things we are clueless of. Plenty of teams (VGK, TBL come to mind) where the captain is not the top scorer, older guy.

Being a captain isn’t about being the best player, but the best leader. It helps to be the best player, but is definitely not just what you should look at when picking a captain. I think Tavares will have it for years if he keeps playing for the leafs.
Matthews should be the next Captain. He is a monster and he is on another level this season. If there was ever a guy who could put a team on his back, it might be Matthews this year.
I want Toronto to win because I am cheering for the Canadian teams, but I got Boston in my bracket. I sure hope I'm wrong though, if all four Canadian teams make it to the second round that would be sweet!

Matthews was a monster in game 2. Domi and Matthews are a great team. PS: I'm old enough to remember when it was a penalty for players to close their hand on the puck for any reason, let alone catch a pass and throw it on the blade of their stick. That was so smooth.

As an American, I am always excited when I see Matthews going full beast mode. For us to compete internationally, we need him at his best.
Not gonna lie, I wanted Reilly to be the Captain back when Tavares got named. But Tavares has definitely done a great job.

This was the first meaningful game I've ever seen Matthews be "that guy." If he can do it again this series, give him the "C" already (likely for next year, and if he wants it).

As a Leafs fan: this. I do not understand what people see in this guy. He is the softest player on the team and he completely disappears as soon as the games have meaning. I see his talents, but for me they are overshadowed by his many weaknesses, especially come playoff time.

Especially 2021, where he, in one single play, killed his team’s season (G6 delay of game with Toronto already penalized for an unsuccessful coach’s challenge, putting them short 2 men)
@@mkreku The Leafs tend to always be matched against some of the best defensive teams and best goalies in the playoffs, so everyone is producing less offense against these teams.
Marner needs to do more offensively in this series for what he's paid and had a poor game for his standards, but he is still a top play driver and is also one of the best players on the team without the puck.

bruins fan here. tavares, the guy wins face-offs. charlie coyle had a tough time in that face-off dot going up against him every time...
Tavares is the chosen C due to the major experience, skills he possesses and perhaps origin since he is born in Toronto.
Matthews doesn't have the C so he can focus more on just playing his dominant game. Perhaps, officially (and even internally), this is to keep the weight of leadership off his shoulders? That's my guess 🙃

Matthews took 23 faceoffs with a 69.6% win percentage, I think probably his best.
Tavares definitely dropped off a bit this season but he's pretty consistent in the playoffs tbh and I have a funny feeling he's going to have a big bounce-back season next year (like 80+ pts), sign a sweetheart deal then be a consistent 50-65ish point, 2nd line even 3rd line+PP guy for the years on his next deal.
Absolutely give the c to him.

The Leafs played two good games. The issue with game one was too many stupid penalties, too many mistakes, and no leadership. They fixed all of that last night.
I went on some Bruin's threads last night, and was shocked at how abusive they were to their own team, many were saying they have blown it as Willy is coming back....funny to see both sides.

I don't always think your top scorer should be the captain all the time either and often isn't. Already having to be required to score all the time probably shouldn't also have to motivate the team or have that responsibility.
Leafs fan here. As much as Matthews has the skills and ability to lead this team to wins, it's still a team sport and he alone cannot makeup for the Leafs mental lapses and bad defensive coverage. Leafs show flashes of brilliance now and again but they have been too inconsistent all season long to be considered a true contender. I saw the Leafs winning one of game 3 or 4 at home and picked Boston in 5 but since they took one on the road, they now lose in 6.
He'll need more than one good playoff game to dump the 'choker' label.

Tavares could give up the "C" and continue playing with the Leafs. Clark Gillies did this with the Islanders. On the Islanders Gillies was the more popular teammate, which is why he got the"C" when Ed Westfall retired, but he recognized that on that team, even if he was seen as kind of an oddball, Denis Potvin was "The Man". The results speak for themselves: four Stanley Cups. Not saying they wouldn't have won those with Gillies as captain, but even on a team with other all-time, all-time greats, Potvin was the key guy.
Matthews is not a vocal emotional leader. There are some guys, cough Kucherov included who will never be captain and they play better without it.

Bobby Orr was also not known for being rah-rah-rah, and he was never actually captain of the Bruins, but everyone knew who was the leader of that team. Everything started, ended and revolved around Bobby.
